Do you answer your door late at night?

Just had a knock on the door, not expecting anyone so didn’t answer. Would you open your door at this time of night? (Not asking about day time just considering it is 10 at night)

Yes with the chain on or look at the door camera first. Had it a few weeks back, some lads had found a dog in the street. Wasn’t mine

Depends why he’s knocking. Might want to tell you your car lights are on and is trying to stop you waking to a flat battery.

Don’t have a car

Would check the camera as its unusual for someone to call so late. If it was a neighbour or someone I know I would answer. Would not answer if it was a strange man, especially if I was home alone. Although i would then worry if he was checking which houses were empty and he might assume mine was.

Guess you’ll never know - that would drive me nuts. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t just call through the door and ask.

OhDear111 · 30/11/2025 22:46

We are fairly remote and the last house. I can see the front door from the dining room, so I’d take a look from there. Cannot go near the front door as it’s its oak frame with glass! They would see me. If I recognised who was there, I’d open it. I’d not open it if I didn’t know the person.

PashaMinaMio · 30/11/2025 22:47

I don’t open my door to unexpected knocks day or night. I look through lounge window and open it just enough and shout “who is it?”

Im a suspicious and cautious type! My home is my castle.

WanderlustMom · 30/11/2025 22:49

Definitely not - but I’m a wimp!

OkWinifred · 30/11/2025 22:52

No, not if it was a stranger.

Chattanoogachoo · 30/11/2025 22:53

I live near an accident blackspot, thankfully there's been no serious accidents but I live alone and I'm very reluctant to answer the door late at night as I live alone and it's really overwhelming to have strangers in the house for hours while they sort breakdowns trucks etc.
I don't think you're at all unreasonable to not answer the door.

Blondiney · 30/11/2025 22:54

Absolutely not.

No, I’d look out of the window above it and ask who it was and what they wanted.

Beesandhoney123 · 30/11/2025 23:03

No, I would ask who it is though. If I could hear them over the barking.

We have dogs. The little ones would have already heard footsteps and have alerted the big ones. The big dogs would be growling menacingly and looking to me for a command. They lead very boring lives otherwise, so someone knocking late at night would make their day.

Kelappen · 30/11/2025 23:06

No, not if I wasn't expecting someone. At this time it wouldn't be a courier and that's the only unexpected knock that I'd expect at any time. I'd be in my "at home" clothes and taken my contacts out so I wouldn't want any more contact with the outside world.

bodyofproof · 30/11/2025 23:08

Yes, I’ve got an intercom so would answer through that

KuromiCat · 30/11/2025 23:09

Well glad it isnt just me that wouldnt answer! Was surprised by all the yes comments but then I live in a rough area so maybe that clouds my judgment

Beekman · 30/11/2025 23:10

I would check the cameras first

purpleme12 · 30/11/2025 23:10

I would be very wary so late yes because it literally never happens. So no don't think I would

CrushingOnRubies · 30/11/2025 23:12

Not before checking the doorbell camera thing .

GumFossil · 30/11/2025 23:12

We live very rurally, so it would be most unusual. We would look at the front of house camera and speak through that if necessary.

SheSpeaks · 30/11/2025 23:14

If someone knocks I answer. No ring doorbell no peephole.

If someone rings I answer.

its what doorbells and phones are for.

DonewhatIcando · 30/11/2025 23:50

No but I have really good security cameras that I can speak and listen through, so I'd ask who they are and what they want.
The camera system also has motion activated lights so I can see who's outside.
I never open the door at night unless I know who it is, DP works nights and I'm usually home alone

Mummysof · 30/11/2025 23:53

I don’t answer my door at 2pm in the afternoon never mind 10pm at night 😅

ThisAutumnTown · 30/11/2025 23:56

I’d just talk to them through my ring doorbell

RosesAndHellebores · 01/12/2025 00:05

It is unlikely to happen as our road is gated, with an intercom and I'd have to buzz someone through; we have a further intercom at our house gates. If someone got through without buzzing either, at 10pm, and knocked on the door, I'd hit the alarm. It's never happened.

Not after watching Manhunt on Netflix!
