Trivial things your DH does that drives you nuts

I was thinking about this while eating my dinner earlier because my runner beans were cold; DH had cooked and a lot of the time when he cooks something with veg, at least one of them is tepid or cold. That got me thinking about other things that, on the surface are quite trivial, but really bloody bug me.

He doesn’t rinse off the shower when he’s finished so there’s always a few stray hairs in the tray.

He leaves doors open; our house is quite cold until the heating has been on for about an hour, we also have two rooms that open off the kitchen, one doesn’t have a radiator and the other one has the radiator turned off. He’ll go into either or both rooms and leave the bloody doors open, making the kitchen even colder than it already is.

He says things like ‘yeah, I’ll do that’ then he doesn’t. When I remind him that X needs to be done, I’m nagging apparently 🙄

He’ll take my car without asking (he has his own car)

He agrees to things without checking with me that I’m ok to do it

He’ll switch the telly over the minute I’ve finished watching something even though we have a second telly that he can watch.

I can’t think of anymore right now and like I said, they’re trivial things but they are all regular occurrences and at times, drive me nuts but I generally don’t say anything because they seem so trivial and also, in so many ways, he’s a great DH.

Breathes 😂

I didn’t realise we were meant to rinse the shower, oops

FrodoBiggins · 30/11/2025 18:49

Mines the same and doesn't heat up food all the way, although I've finally got him to fix that after decades of lukewarm beans on hot toast.

He starts cleaning up when I've just finished cooking so the food goes cold. See above, he doesn't care about food temps. I can't really even complain cos I'm a very messy cook and he does 100% of the housework 😂

He can't blow his nose.

The way he picks up the pieces in Splendor makes me want to kill him.

I do love him. Honest.

twinklelake · 30/11/2025 18:56

closes blinds in every room he goes in, can’t stand it, I like natural light coming in

As a fellow fan of Splendor I need to know how he is picking them up in such an offensive manner! Does he clack them together?

I can't relate to the taking my car bit of the OP. We have two cars and they are both our cars. I shocked a friend recently when she heard us talking about which car who was taking that afternoon and just referred to them by colour rather than yours or mine because we have no such concept.

He does this jaunty I'm-so-care-free little movement. Appreciate it doesn't sound like much when written down!

Every time I go to use a tea towel he’s left it folded in quarters and soaking wet.

And he uses so many bath towels and then denies any of them were his.

Other than these, I can’t fault the guy!

It might be I feel like that about my car as I never drive his and even if I did, I’d always say ‘alright if I use your car? Or something similar, I’d never just leave the house, get in his car and drive off in it.

Plays videos on his phone with the sound on, which he’s doing right now and tuts if I do the same thing.

He leaves his Alice bands and hair bobbles EVERYWHERE. Kitchen sides, coffee table, washbasin, on the floor waiting to be eaten by the robovac.

And if I say something, he mansplains to me about how he removes them for comfort but how easy it is to accidentally leave them lying about.

Mate, I had long hair for the first 20 years we spent together. Was the house awash with hair accessories? NO.

HoppityBun · 30/11/2025 19:13

There’s a card I’ve seen in stationers and I think also in Oxfam shops that says along the lines of:
“When your husband says he’ll do something, he’ll do it. You don’t have to keep nagging by reminding him every six months“.

HairyOobit · 30/11/2025 19:15

Leaves the hall cupboard door open after hanging up his coat, putting his laundry in the basket, getting something out the freezer. Just shut the fucking door!,,

WinterHangingBasket · 30/11/2025 19:17

Stacks saucepans, dishes, plates etc completely illogically. e.g. big on top of small, or oval inside round. To avoid a fight, I blame MIL for never getting him stacking cups as a toddler.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 30/11/2025 19:18

Mine won't shut doors.
He doesn't put lights out either.
Sometimes he does shut a door - the bathroom door, but leaves the light on!
And don't get me started on how he arranges stuff in the dishwasher!!! I have to sort it out, every time.

Riefjeooe · 30/11/2025 19:18

Slurps his tea.

Mrspatmoresapprentice · 30/11/2025 19:18

He is so….inefficient at home! He is perfectly competent and capable. I know this because we met at work, where he is shit hot. All good.
At home, he is a bit of a bumbling fuck wit. And no, it is absolutely NOT weaponised incompetence. He does far more than his fair share, he does it off his own initiative, I don’t have to tell him. But the shit, ineffective way he does it makes me want to scream! He doesn’t ever moan or complain but he could do it all in half the time if he just….thought about it?

TheChosenTwo · 30/11/2025 19:19

He never cleans out the fire grate! Ever!

He always hogs our bathroom when I’m in a hurry in the morning, I can be done in 10 minutes, switch on the shower, quick wee while it’s warming up, speedy shower and teeth. He will take an hour.

he cleans up the kitchen But neglects the floor - my biggest pet peeve is a kitchen floor with ‘bits’ on it 🤬

I do love him very much so forgive him these small but annoying habits!

oh wait, he also sneezes way too loudly 😭

This is the car equivalent of not having your own side of the bed! I can't imagine not having our own cars even though we drive both!

PistachioTiramisu · 30/11/2025 19:22

Leaves cupboard doors open
Never rinses the bath down after use
Only half fills the kettle so there's never enough for my second cup
Throws his coat and jumper on the floor instead of hanging them up
Uses his knife like a pen
Slurps his tea while it is boiling hot - I have told him this is not good for him but he takes no notice

All these drive me absolutely nuts.

Femalefootyfan · 30/11/2025 19:24

Oh another one

He’ll moan that I don’t let him do anything housework wise and I admit, I like things done in a certain way so there’s not a lot I give up to him - we’re both retired so have plenty of time to get house stuff done. That said, I’m trying to give him a bit more to do, so I’ll put a wash on and let him know it’s on and ask him to take it out and hang it. I’ll get home and the machine has finished and it’s all still in there. Then he says ‘oh, I forgot about that’ so why moan I never ask you to do anything, then when I do, you don’t bloody do it

I don't know how it would ever come about that we considered either one his or mine. We bought a car together when we first needed one. Then we bought a second when we moved out of London and both needed one in the day. One was smaller as it's the one DH used mostly when he was working and I was on maternity leave but on the weekends we would both drive either depending on who was taking DC somewhere or needed the bigger boot for shopping etc.

therewasafishinthepercolator · 30/11/2025 19:32

He's a good cook - great dinners - but I hate how he serves it up on the plate. All spaced out and too far up the edges of the dinner plate. Big stupid empty space in middle of plate.

He doesn't know why he does it. I don't know why it bugs me. Other than it looks daft. I have to push it all toward the centre before eating

We laugh about it. "Oh, look. My potatoes are making a bid for escape..."

CrikeyMajikey · 30/11/2025 19:33

Yep, just eaten a plate of cold veggies too.

Most things.

DP and I have waged an ongoing and eternal war over what curtains are for. I think they're to keep the sun out and I draw them in the day if the sun is bothering me (getting in my eyes or on my screen). DP thinks they're to keep the darkness out (which makes no sense to me at all) and makes such a fuss over closing them at night even in rooms neither of us are in.
