Do you have a large-ish dog, e.g. Boxer and bigger that insists on being a lap dog, when it really isn't?

Our family dogs decades back were cocker spaniels, admittedly not a large breed but our three were particularly sturdy (probably overfed, I admit) and you certainly knew about it had one of them been using you as a cushion for half an hour or more. It amazes me when I see people sitting on sofas accompanied by the likes of Labradors and Great Danes. Great for the dogs but less satisfying for the humans!

My large French Shepherd invented her own form of “lap sitting” when she got (much) too big. She approaches us sideways and rests her tummy on our legs.

My Springer is always on my knee. Or in my bed.

My golden retriever would have been far happier if she has been born a tiny breed.

The big lump is always clambering on someone’s lap for a cuddle. She doesn’t realise her size at all.

40kg bull luchere here - barks at you if he can’t find a spot on the sofa. Sleeps upstairs with us and when it’s cold wants to sleep UNDER the covers! He’s currently lying, full length on the sofa, snuggled up to the teen also lying on the sofa. He was a very neglected and abused rescue when we took him on. Its been an absolute joy to see him transform into a confident, entitled soft lad!

All dogs are lapdogs, they have no idea how big they are

ErrolTheDragon · 28/11/2025 22:04

I knew a lovely Great Dane (my old dachshund used to stay with her when we were on holiday) who would sit on your knee - bottom in your lap, feet on the floor.

Mybeautifuldogs · 28/11/2025 22:06

I have a Yorkshire terrier who is a lapdog, and a St Bernard who thinks she can do whatever the little one does.

She is forever just coming along and plonking herself down on me.

I can neither confirm nor deny where my just short of 8 stone Dogue de Bordeaux is sitting, only that I haven’t been able to feel my feet for at least half hr. That said, she’s a rescue who weighed less than half that when rescued despite being a full adult so she is thoroughly spoiled including sofa privileges, and her own pillow on the bed 😂

bozzabollix · 28/11/2025 22:09

Yep, two Labradors. Great in cold weather.

SeaAndStars · 28/11/2025 22:11

My parents had a German Shepherd dog that would share a sofa with you. He was the best hot water bottle I've ever known.

Thislittlekitten · 28/11/2025 22:15

My 2 year old a golden retriever thinks he’s one of our cats! I must admit though he is very cosy and cuddly.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 28/11/2025 22:17

We have a collie cross and she thinks she’s a lapdog!

Why is no one paying the photo tax? I want to see your “lapdogs”

35kg Staff x American bulldog who lies with me whenever she can

I have 2 retrievers who believe themselves to be lap dogs. One tries to sit on my head, but compromises with the lap

Ha this is the only reason I clicked on this thread 😅

Dolliepops · 28/11/2025 22:38

Yep, 3 year old GR drapes herself right over my lap and takes up the rest of the sofa.

unsync · 28/11/2025 22:41

All dogs are lap dogs given the chance, no? I miss snuggles with my stinky, farting, snoring mutley.

TheTecknician · 28/11/2025 23:03

Our spaniels could be clingy but in the winter when the fire was alight, it won. There was often a sub-battle for the best spot, with a sharp-clawed cat as an additional competitor.

My 39kg German shepherd has spent a good proportion of this evening laying in my lap...he's not often a cuddler he usually just likes me to be present so when it does happen I don't care how dead my legs are, I'm making the most of it! Normally he doesn't get a look in because his 12kg cockapoo boss is taking all the lap space and he wouldn't dare argue with him 🤣

Wolfiefan · 28/11/2025 23:21

My wolfhounds are lapdogs. It’s fine when they take it in turns but two at a time is difficult.

You don't have to ask me twice.

Mavis, my actual lapdog, and Betty the one who thinks she's a lapdog 🤣

Photo tax paid, this is my lap dog who also has a way of leaning that you can’t actually move a muscle.

Yep 32kg English Setter will happily sit on/squish as close to anyone as possible.

Photo tax ( although that is his chair 😳)

Yep, two Labradors. Great in cold weather.

Same here they try to sit on the window sill like cats and sneak in and curl up on pillows
