Do you have a large-ish dog, e.g. Boxer and bigger that insists on being a lap dog, when it really isn't?

Our family dogs decades back were cocker spaniels, admittedly not a large breed but our three were particularly sturdy (probably overfed, I admit) and you certainly knew about it had one of them been using you as a cushion for half an hour or more. It amazes me when I see people sitting on sofas accompanied by the likes of Labradors and Great Danes. Great for the dogs but less satisfying for the humans!

In our house dogs are not allowed on the furniture.

Those that opt to can join the dog on the dog bed.
Dog knows the rules.

No, our Samoyed keeps to the flooor or their part of the sofa thankfully. She’s well trained though and that wouldn’t be tolerated .. although we’re all very well trained too so suspect she’s not wanting that otherwise we’d be well trained on receiving her royal floofy-ness by now 😂

2 x 40ish kg German Shepherds here. Both spend time across my lap, but it's usually a big head draped over my thigh. The latest in a long line of GSDs that have all been the same. They also share my bed.
Photo tax duly paid

My GSD, Ozzie, was exactly the same,I once found him curled up in my bed, head on the pillow, duvet over his etc just waiting for me to join him. DH apparently wasn’t needed. He was my dog and I miss him so much.

OP, there’s no such thing as too big for a lap dog! Horses are similar in my experience, the really, really big ones are just little ponies in their heads and the little ponies… well they might look cute but they’re largely lethal! 😂

Ours is currently taking up 3 cushions on the sofa. He's taller than me (5'5) on his hind legs. Mind you I should've known better when as a young lad he used to nick my seat whenever I stood up by sitting on it like this.....

Yep 32kg English Setter will happily sit on/squish as close to anyone as possible.

I have two English setters that do exactly the same!

I was going to say this post is utterly pointless unless we see photographic evidence of your big dogs who identify as lap dogs…
we have a black lab who insists on sleeping in the middle of our bed. Hubby bum cheek hangs out one side of the bed and mine hangs of the other. Darling dog is snuggled in between… it tickles us both the sigh of contentment once the lights are turned off….
ps: if we have to talk to each other once the lights are turned off - we whisper - so we don’t wake the dog :)

And this is exactly why our labs not a bed dog. Dh was in for major surgery last year and this year so I invited the wee bugger up to our bed as I knew he would be confused and upset about his dad disappearing. Turns out the he has no concept of lying vertically, nah right over both pillows will do. He doesn't even blink when we head off to bed now, too delighted to have the sofa to himself

I wish I had a dog to sit with me on the sofa. Especially a big breed.
I can't wait to get one when I move.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/11/2025 21:40

There is something so lovely about seeing dogs on people /furniture

Nothing attached.

Clearly, many dogs are just big babies.

My lapdogs decided to stay in bed with me this morning and watch Home Alone.

They had the whole of a king sized bed to lay on, and chose me instead.

Who needs blood flow in their legs anyways.

They’re blocking half your TV 😂

TTCbabynumber22025 · 29/11/2025 22:08

I once was waiting in the vets and a couple came in with two Great Danes. As soon as the woman sat down, one of them climbed up into her lap and just sat there while the other dog just stared and looked annoyed that his brother had got there first. Absolutely tickled me and I had a lovely chat with their owner, she said she couldn’t sit down without one of them sitting on her. I love dogs.

Thats why I only watch things I've seen before when I'm in my bed, so I know what's happening from a quarter of a screen 🤣

happygertie · 29/11/2025 22:34

I love my big daft dog thinking he is a small lap dog, he’s like a big baby. He is big and heavy but wouldn’t have it any other way, I joke he is my favourite weighted blanket

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 30/11/2025 09:12

Sounds as though your dog need to be trained not to clamber all over you.

Not a great fan of animalsc sitting on furniture. Dirty and unhygenic.

You don't say who you are responding to, but if it's everyone, I will say that all my dogs would ask politely before getting onto the sofa. If they've been out for a walk and are wet or dirty we confine them to the kitchen behind a dog gate.
If a dog is clean and dry there is no issue with allowing them on the sofa. It is no more dirty and unhygienic than the average small child being on the furniture with shoes on and grubby fingers. You are far more likely to catch a germ transmitted virus from a human than from a dog.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 30/11/2025 09:24

We just lost this great big doofus. We both adored him, but he was my DH’s dog. The minute I left the room, this used to happen.

Yes we have a ginormous golden shepherd who thinks he is a lap dog, he genuinely thinks he’s the same size as our 9 kilo toy cockapoo!

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 30/11/2025 09:32

Sorry you lost your lovely boy @BlueEyedBogWitch 😢
It's very hard when they go - they leave such a massive void in your life.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 30/11/2025 09:36

Thank you @CoubousAndTourmaIet . He’s left big shoes to fill, that’s for sure.
