Do you have a large-ish dog, e.g. Boxer and bigger that insists on being a lap dog, when it really isn't?

Our family dogs decades back were cocker spaniels, admittedly not a large breed but our three were particularly sturdy (probably overfed, I admit) and you certainly knew about it had one of them been using you as a cushion for half an hour or more. It amazes me when I see people sitting on sofas accompanied by the likes of Labradors and Great Danes. Great for the dogs but less satisfying for the humans!

I just used the Boxer as an example of size of dog that is borderline too big to be a lapdog. I didn't mean Boxers specifically.

Haha no I know, it was said in jest, hence the photos 😂.

2 x 40ish kg German Shepherds here. Both spend time across my lap, but it's usually a big head draped over my thigh. The latest in a long line of GSDs that have all been the same. They also share my bed.
Photo tax duly paid

That’s it exactly.
the one I knew was also fond of leaning - I’m only 5’1” so I had to brace myself but it’s a lovely feeling!

Ah yes the lean. I get that. Leans in for a cuddle. Can almost push me over with the love aka strength of the cuddle 🐶

Most of DB’s Bernese Mountain Dogs have been dedicated lap sitters :)

The bull lurcher woke me up at 4.30 this morning crying. I followed him downstairs thinking he wanted a wee. No, he wanted me to tuck him in when he curled up on the sofa!

the damn dog woke me up to tuck him into bed on the sofa 🙄

Your poor dog has to sleep on the sofa? Not in the bed?!

Such cruelty!

Mybeautifuldogs · 29/11/2025 13:12

My lapdogs decided to stay in bed with me this morning and watch Home Alone.

They had the whole of a king sized bed to lay on, and chose me instead.

Who needs blood flow in their legs anyways.

We used to say our dog thought he was as big as his eyes. Would "birth" himself onto your lap between your clamped arm and body. He was a staff crossed with something tall, so long legs and sturdy bod.

I lost my boy (English bull terrier) in September but I miss being squished on the sofa by all 38kg of him every single day

He is encouraged to sleep in or on the bed but is choosing to sleep on the sofa sometimes. My youngest DS (17) also slept on the sofa last night (so he could sleep with the dog ....)

This thread has just made my heart ache all over again for our family dog, he was a Rhodesian Ridgeback who was thoroughly convinced he was cat sized and would squash anyone who sat on the sofa long enough. He used to lay in bed with my brother and would take up the entire thing while my brother tried to play PlayStation around him. The best bit was that he knew he wasn't really supposed to sit on people so he'd get entirely in someone's lap but keep one foot just touching the floor so technically he wasn't breaking any rules 😁

CoraLea · 29/11/2025 14:44

my mastiff should have been called shadow....

CoffeeBeansGalore · 29/11/2025 14:52

My Saint Bernard used to climb up on my lap, tuck her muzzle under my chin & fall asleep gently snoring away.
My tiny sil was visiting once & sat in my chair. The saint clambered up for a cuddle. Sil disappeared - you could only see half a leg & feet!
I miss that dog 💕.

I knew a lovely Great Dane (my old dachshund used to stay with her when we were on holiday) who would sit on your knee - bottom in your lap, feet on the floor.

😅

My golden retriever would have been far happier if she has been born a tiny breed.

The big lump is always clambering on someone’s lap for a cuddle. She doesn’t realise her size at all.

My tall and heavy (all legs and head rather than rotund) golden does exactly the same thing. Got to admit I love it 😍

Wheresmatty · 29/11/2025 17:33

I have a boxer who is 8, a black lab who is 3 and a black miniature schnauzer who is 12.

The boxer despite being many times the size of the schnauzer is indeed the lapdog of the trio, I loves nothing more than being sat on or as close to you as possible. The black lab likes to have a toe-bean touching you at all times but doesn’t sit on you. The mini schnauzer, being the oldest and grumpiest likes his own space, until such time as someone orders a donner kebab and then he will sit on your head until you give him some.

My dogs snores were my favourite sound in the whole world

Gingerwarthog · 29/11/2025 17:36

Labrador half on my knee and half on sofa. Draped across me like a blanket. Saving me some money on heating bills. Thinks he’s a dachshund.

TheTecknician · 29/11/2025 17:53

A pub I once frequented had a resident dog - she belonged to the landlady. I won't say the dog's or the pub's names as they're too outing but said dog was a Labrador/Rhodesian Ridgeback cross. Everybody's friend and nobody's enemy, except at closing time when she was very alert to strange noises outside. Anyhoo, she would mull around the bar area listening for the sounds of crisps and pork scratchings and otherwise make herself very comfortable on the bench seats, using any convenient customer as a cushion! And nobody seemed to mind. She was, however, exceptionally well behaved and properly trained and would vacate the seats and bar area without hesitation if the boss instructed her so. This wasn't a bad thing as the customers' generosity was adding to her waistline, as if she wasn't big enough! A grand pooch.
