Do you have a large-ish dog, e.g. Boxer and bigger that insists on being a lap dog, when it really isn't?

Our family dogs decades back were cocker spaniels, admittedly not a large breed but our three were particularly sturdy (probably overfed, I admit) and you certainly knew about it had one of them been using you as a cushion for half an hour or more. It amazes me when I see people sitting on sofas accompanied by the likes of Labradors and Great Danes. Great for the dogs but less satisfying for the humans!

I was once sitting alone on a park bench opposite the lake when a Staffordshire Bull Terrier came scampering up and jumped on the bench. She could have laid herself anywhere but she chose to curl up as close to me as possible. We'd never met so she was obviously a trusting pooch but it was also a good job I like dogs! Her name was Diesel - her owner was fishing in the lake just opposite.

Greyhound and a Deerhound, it's like being crushed under a bag of hairy elbows

Wouldn't change either of the idiots for the world though ❤️

The Lab we had when I was a child was convinced he was a lapdog. Great in an era without central heating!

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 29/11/2025 08:58

We lost our 4 year old lab in a horrible accident in June and is so anything to have him taking up all my personal space again 💔. If I sat cross legged on the floor, he’d always come and sit on my knee. He’d generally lie with his head and chest on me and his body taking up the rest of “our” small sofa and he’d always sleep with his head on my feet. I’m autistic and he was basically a living weighted blanket 🥰.

We have a 7 month old puppy now who is the same but he likes to sleep on my pillow. When he first came home, we could both fit but now he needs a pillow and a half 😂. He will literally shove me along in the night without me even realising (DH works away in the week so I just move onto his).

I woke up this morning lying across the head of the bed against the pillows as my lovely lab likes to snuggle and seems to nudge me along the bed. I frequently wake up hanging off the edge and get out and back in on the other side.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/11/2025 09:07

Yes. My step daughters boxer who I adore likes to sit on me or anyone - happily sat on my dad the other week

has no awareness of personal space but I love him 🐶😍🐶

hes loving and not a bad bone in his body - nor a brain cell 😂

You don't have to ask me twice.

Mavis, my actual lapdog, and Betty the one who thinks she's a lapdog 🤣

Awwwwww adorable

What do you mean boxers aren’t lap dogs? I don’t think any of mine got that memo. 😂

I knew a lovely Great Dane (my old dachshund used to stay with her when we were on holiday) who would sit on your knee - bottom in your lap, feet on the floor.

That’s set me up for day 😀

Yesimmoaningaboutbenefits · 29/11/2025 10:15

65kg lap dog here!

Why is no one paying the photo tax? I want to see your “lapdogs”

Its the only reason I am here tbh, I have a Cocker spaniel who isnt particularly huge, im here for the st Bernard's on laps😄

LoveSandbanks · 29/11/2025 10:22

The bull lurcher woke me up at 4.30 this morning crying. I followed him downstairs thinking he wanted a wee. No, he wanted me to tuck him in when he curled up on the sofa!

the damn dog woke me up to tuck him into bed on the sofa 🙄

Lurkingandlearning · 29/11/2025 10:24

@JudgeBread is the only one to mention their elbows. Even then she only said hairy. Dogs seem to have the pointiest jabby elbows. As lovely as they are their elbows are annoying

This is exactly how my partners great dane sat when he wanted to be close to you - he reversed on.

I used to look after a lurcher who did this and often lay like a twisted cat (iykyk) She was the pointless dog I've ever met, all angles but soft as butter

Forgot dog tax, don't have one of the Deerhound because she's less guilty of this behaviour, but here's the greyhound happily crushing me to have a snooze (I've censored my own face because I was ill at the time and don't want to inflict my flu face on any of you)

the one I knew was also fond of leaning - I’m only 5’1” so I had to brace myself but it’s a lovely feeling!

Chasingsquirrels · 29/11/2025 10:55

Ah yes, the leaning! If I was next to a wall or kitchen cabinet it half crushed me.

He was put down in the summer at nearly 10yo, which is old for a Dane, and while I don't miss his drool or smelliness, he was an affectionate dog (on his terms).

I just used the Boxer as an example of size of dog that is borderline too big to be a lapdog. I didn't mean Boxers specifically.

My friend has a standard poodle ( quite tall) who sits on her lap every time she comes in from work 🤣

Our spaniels adopted a similar pose if pausing whilst going downstairs.

My cocker spaniel never paused whilst doing anything, top speed ahead, no brain cells engaged.
