Pointless Christmas themed stuff

Notyouthful · 25/11/2025 06:51

Each year, retailers bring out more Christmas themed stuff, mainly everyday stuff. Use this thread to post what is the most pointless thing, in your opinion you have seen with Christmas stuff on it.

I will start - The Range sell a dustpan and brush set with Christmas stuff on. Home Bargains - a ceramic soap dispenser shaped as a bauble with Merry Christmas on it.

I saw some Christmas curtains once. Imagine having so much time on your hands you change your curtains for a few weeks.

Sleepyandtiredandlazy · 25/11/2025 06:59

If people didn't buy this tat then retailers wouldn't produce it.

Your thread would be more interesting if you asked if anyone actually wasted their money on this stuff and whether it went straight in the bin after Christmas/ New Year was over. And whether they had any conscience about such wasteful and environmentally damaging behaviour.

I'm baffled how people have room to keep all this stuff, extra door mats, bed sets, soap dispensers etc. I see some people "refresh" their decor for each season, endless pumpkins etc for autumn. I'm just jealous of their storage to be honest!

Katypp · 25/11/2025 07:20

There is a thread like this every year, which usually morphs into a self-congratulary excuse to parade your moral superiority because you don't buy 'Christmas tat' (I know no-one has said this yet, but someone will for sure).
Can I offer an alternative view?
Presumably the haters go to bed during the Christmas holiday, have a shower, dry dishes etc? So what's the issue with using Christmas themed bedding, towels etc for December?
Specifically the Christmas bin bags - do pps not have a bin bag on the go at present opening time? So a bin bag will be used regardless of whether it'sa pudding print or plain black.
Of course, critical to the pearl clutching is the somewhat weird assumption that people spend a lot of money on bedding etc and then throw it away after Christmas, which clearly is rubbish.
A MN classic every year

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/11/2025 07:39

If there wasn't 'Christmas tat' (there, I have said it) there would be nothing for me to buy for the Secret Santa Extravaganza at work.

(Just as well it's secret!)

I completely agree with this and have the same thoughts.
Personally I wouldnt buy a Christmas themed dust pan and brush (as where would i store it?) but Christmas bedding? Why not? It gets used throughout advent and stored for next year.
I dont buy Christmas PJs as the kids will grow out of them by next year and get jumpers from family or charity shops.
Nobody had these thoughts when people bought Christmas napkins (which have been around much longer than a lot of other 'tat'), "shudda got white that can be used all year round'.
If you have the products out and use them then you'd be using something anyway. I presume most people store items for further use. People who are wasteful, will be watefull regardless.
Anyhoo I have a sudden urge to go to B&M... I wonder if work will accept that as an emergency?

Needmorelego · 25/11/2025 08:55

I am a renter. I don't own my flat.
This means I'm not allowed to decorate, put up pictures or shelves.
Seasonal themed stuff is a way I can put a little personality into my home.

I agree with this too. We have Hallowe'en decorations, a few autumn bits and loads of Christmas stuff including a throw for the sofa, bedding, mugs, tea towels. It all goes away carefully every year to be re-used the following year. None of it takes up much space (we have a small house). No harm done. I would draw the line at the dustpan and brush but I'm off out to find some Christmas toilet roll later.

ChubbyPuffling · 25/11/2025 09:04

I have a bright red shower curtain with a cartoony rudolph on it. The kids (23 and 24 now!) always know when it's the first of December in our house.
Bought it as an antidote to all the "bah humbug, xmas tat" conversations at work 12 years ago.

So... careful... I'm eying up a stupid elf bathmat next. 😜

My dad always used to buy these for the wrapping paper and detritus on Christmas morning 😂😂

Well your dad was clearly not a good person @PinkFootstool
Only a real Christmas tree (or Balsam Hill in extremis) and carefully-curated decorations are allowed. Nothing else to indicate it's Christmas.
Caveat: I do have a BH tree and buy a real one too, so i am clearly a crossover Christmas person.

I’m not baffled because you know, lofts are a thing, but I’m jealous. We don’t currently have much storage space but I would like to change things round a bit throughout the year, not in a major way but a couple of ceramic pumpkin candle jars for Autumn, a feather tree for Easter (DH is Swedish so this is his tradition), light coloured cushion covers for summer, warmer colours for winter. We just don’t have the space for the ‘off-season’ stuff. One day…

Hang on @ChubbyPuffling - isn't that shudders Making Memories?

Katypp · 25/11/2025 09:22

Which presumably you will be 'sending to landfill' after Christmas??
Don't you know everyone who buys 'Christmas tat' gets new every year. That's the MN myth anyway

LLJETO · 25/11/2025 09:26

I wouldn’t do the dustpan and brush set but we have 2 sets of Christmas bedding for each bed. This is so one can be on the bed and one in the wash. We’ve had all of them for years and will have them for years to come.

We also have a hand wash dispenser in the shape of Santa that I bought from Home Bargains for 99p about 10 years ago…it was actually full of hand wash which was used, then I just wash it out and refill it. Then we have some Christmas hand towels. I bought new ones last year as the ones we’d had previously (for about 15 years, if not more) were getting thin..they got donated with some other old ones to a local dog shelter.

We also have a couple of ceramic pumpkins for autumn, with a few other bits..again all get reused.

Storage wise - the autumn stuff goes in the loft. Bedding goes in the room it’s for (we have a big airing cupboard and also decent underbed storage).

Needmorelego · 25/11/2025 09:37

It's funny....no one ever says stuff like "where do you have the space to store suitcases, the blow up lilo and flip flops that only get used once a year when you go on holiday" 😂😂😂😂

I had a boyfriend whose mum changed the sofa covers and curtains and throws every autumn and spring.

Cream for spring and summer and then tartan (v posh fabric) for autumn and winter.

I was always so impressed!

JudgeBread · 25/11/2025 09:41

I've got some festive spatulas 😁

These are actually designed to be thrown away after one use though, so I don't think that bad in the grand scheme of things.

Sartre · 25/11/2025 10:29

My mum’s into this sort of thing. She has cutlery holders shaped like Santa hats, Santa hats for the back of her dining room chairs, a Christmas toilet cover, Christmas soap dispensers.

I do have Christmas mugs and plates but that’s about as far as I go ‘tat’ wise. I used to get the snowman toilet roll every year too but haven’t seen that around for some time.
