Pointless Christmas themed stuff

Notyouthful · 25/11/2025 06:51

Each year, retailers bring out more Christmas themed stuff, mainly everyday stuff. Use this thread to post what is the most pointless thing, in your opinion you have seen with Christmas stuff on it.

I will start - The Range sell a dustpan and brush set with Christmas stuff on. Home Bargains - a ceramic soap dispenser shaped as a bauble with Merry Christmas on it.

I saw some Christmas curtains once. Imagine having so much time on your hands you change your curtains for a few weeks.

My mum would do this. I’m surprised she doesn’t already, actually!

ThreeSixtyTwo · 25/11/2025 10:39

Actually, the bing bags sound the best of it. You'd use some bin bags anyway. Similarly with paper napkins, if you do use them, you can use themed ones as well.

I assume majority of the themed things get bought as gifts, because people want to give something and if it is Christmas themed it must be a good gift.

Notyouthful · 25/11/2025 11:02

My Parents have Xmas mugs which most are 30+ years old. Have The Snowman china mugs (Royal Doulton?)

-Christmas themed salad tongs
-The famous gingerbread rat! At nearly £60 for the large one, I'll pass thanks! www.diy.com/departments/gingerbread-rat-christmas-decoration-alpha-rat/5060355381716_BQ.prd
-Front door mats. I appreciate the idea or a decorative door, but surely after a month or 2 of it being outside in the rain and used to clean muddy shoes, it would be manky to dry and store for use again next door.

Pointless landfill.

Christmas pudding themed bin bags. Because why not?

Edited

I don't object to these as much as a lot of the other tat. We all need bin bags, and use them. They will get used up, and if you're buying christmas pudding bin bags you are buying them instead of, not as well as.

I object to the pointless landfill tat highlighted in the OP like soap dispensers when you have one already, or a sodding christmas dustpan and brush. FFS.

My dad always used to buy these for the wrapping paper and detritus on Christmas morning 😂😂

I think they look fun and why not get some Xmas ones at Xmas instead of boring black ones?

I've got some festive spatulas 😁

That was going to be my post! (Except I restrained myself from buying one Grin)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/11/2025 12:20

I used to wonder why on earth anyone would buy 🎄bedding - but that was before I had little Gdcs to stay for just 2 nights, and bought a double 🎅 set for the sofa bed they still share. 🙂

Soonenough · 25/11/2025 12:22

I love all this nonsense and my kids loved it growing up . I don't have bedding as no kids now but they would have loved it . One year I contemplated not putting it all out but my grown up kids strongly objected as it is special to them . I did pare down some cheaper meaningless stuff and donated it . A lot of it is inherited stuff too . I have ornaments from the 30s included on the tree.

Oh, so you don't use binbags then? Or is it because they are printed that makes them 'pointless'?
Or are you one of those supercilious posters who enjoys the myth that we are all throwing away our £75 duvet sets after one use, so you can feel environmentally superior?

Cherrysoup · 25/11/2025 13:03

Had to go to town today and yesterday for various reasons and I’m amazed at the “tat” in the shops. Christmas cushions, Christmas bins, what do you do with them after? I’m desperately trying to empty my loft, I’m going to cull the Christmas stuff before putting it back this year! As per the unwanted types of present thread, consumable is the way forward, but I’ve always said this, I’d rather not have yet more stuff.

GleefulGiraffe · 25/11/2025 13:04

I buy Christmas PJs for the kids and they wear them until they don't fit anymore. The world doesn't end if you wear Christmas PJs in February, it's not like a Christmas jumper where someone might find it a bit strange if you wore it out of season.

I'm quite tempted to get bedding now actually.

Only if that's where you put it.

My friend works p/t in Matalan and she says the amount of Halloween and Christmas themed tat they sell is unbelievable.

pteromum · 25/11/2025 13:11

I think this one belongs here, or perhaps on a planet of its own.

whitley neil Bacon and horseradish GIN

what in the name of Christmas

Has anyone tried it!!!

I think these are quite amusing and at least they are functional. I still wouldn't buy them though 😂

What qualifies as "tat" ?
A lot of what people have mentioned on this thread is normal household objects that happen to be red and have a Christmas tree printed on 🤔

FadedRed · 25/11/2025 13:13

@ObtuseMoose - that lavatory set is amazing! (I’m hoping that’s not your actual bathroom though?) 😂

Ha ha… I spotted the Christmas duvet cover in our linens cupboard today, while getting an towel, and thought “I’d better get that out now” before I forget it even exists, for another year!

I have a bright red shower curtain with a cartoony rudolph on it. The kids (23 and 24 now!) always know when it's the first of December in our house.
Bought it as an antidote to all the "bah humbug, xmas tat" conversations at work 12 years ago.

So... careful... I'm eying up a stupid elf bathmat next. 😜

lol, I just bought a bauble shaped bath mat as an impulse buy...

MaplePumpkin · 25/11/2025 13:25

I have never seen these Christmas pudding bin bags before, but now I am determined to buy some this year!!!!

I have autumnal decor (wreaths, ceramic pumpkins etc) and autumnal bedding that comes out every September/October.

I have Christmas bedding, Christmas soap dispensers, Christmas mugs etc that we use every year. Also buy Christmas loo roll each December!

And I love it all!

bizzey · 25/11/2025 13:30

I really , really want the Christmas Pudding bin bags !!

Where can I get them ??
🤣🌲🌲🌲 !!

I absolutely love Christmas stuff but draw the line at this, imagine having to poop in front of 🎅!

OMG my sister in law has this in the downstairs loo! And I say SIL rather than brother as it's definitely her - she's is a massive Christmas fan my brother would probably just have a tree and a few lights... I love visiting at this time of year to see what new stuff there is 😁
More importantly her kids love it and while it's too much effort for me I just think fair play it's up to her how she decorates.
