Pointless Christmas themed stuff

Each year, retailers bring out more Christmas themed stuff, mainly everyday stuff. Use this thread to post what is the most pointless thing, in your opinion you have seen with Christmas stuff on it.

I will start - The Range sell a dustpan and brush set with Christmas stuff on. Home Bargains - a ceramic soap dispenser shaped as a bauble with Merry Christmas on it.

I have some 20-30 year old Xmas mugs that get used annually. I got a present of a Mr&Mrs Claus salt and pepper set that I don’t think I’ve ever used. But a handful of seasonal serving dishes that do get regular seasonal use. And about 6 tea and hand towels that get used some years and forgotten others. When DD was small, we got a second plastic plate/bowl/mug/glass set that was used as part of daily crockery until she graduated to regular pottery ones, but while the flowers version got thrown away, the Christmas version got stored and reused for many years by her, and now by visiting smallies on occasion - we probably got it when she was about to turn 1 and she’s now about to turn 20 - so I don’t feel guilty about spending the extra €15 or so.

Just got the xmas biscuit tin out to check... 2003 (the use by of the first biscuits to grace the gorgeous, joyous tin...).
It gives me pleasure to put biscuits in it in December, and to take them out again to eat them!.
At least my xmas tat is long lasting.

Christmas pudding themed bin bags. Because why not?

Edited

TBF I bought some Christmas pudding binbags for 10p in the 'January' sales one year and used them to wrap awkwardly shaped children's gifts the year after. And then they were used to haul gifts home from visiting relatives,, and then finally used as bin bags, so they earned their keep (but I classed it as 'repurposing' deadstock from the off to make myself feel better about it 😁)

We have Christmas duvets, we use the same ones every year between November and New year. Christmas mugs, same ones every year, one is 45 years old. Christmas tea towels, same ones every year and Christmas cushions, same ones every year. Not sure how that's wasteful. I do buy Xmas kitchen roll and napkins instead of plain ones but they get used.

Happyjoe · 25/11/2025 15:05

Am afraid I've been turned. As a bonafide scrooge, I succumbed to 2 Christmas cat tea towels at the weekend. Spotted at local nursery...

They made me laugh, so yes, I have stepped over to the dark side of Xmas tat.

'Waste' is judgemental.

what you spend your money on I might consider wasteful, but you obviously don't.

i don't have the things the OP described, but I do have Chrudtmas Themed houseware. No I don't 'bin it' at the end of the season, why would u? I enjoy getting it out each year.

what exactly is wasteful & environmentally damaging about my behaviour?

I don't do lots of things others do, but I don't bang on about it.

If you don't bin it after you have used it and you put it away for next year then obviously it's not wasteful.
If it's something you enjoy then that's fair enough.
I was making the assumption people bought this stuff as disposable . Obviously I was wrong and I apologise.

Well now I want these & they're all out of stock! (Looooove the goldfish version, too.)

wantom · 25/11/2025 15:57

Smug me.... I'll be abroad for all this stuff. To a country that doesn't go apeshit for Christmas. The only tat to be seen will be ME! 😊

Theraffarian · 25/11/2025 16:11

My handwash will be in Christmas fragrances, and one will even be a little gingerbread man . I have an indoor Christmas doormat, but along with all the other decorations it will go back in the loft ready for next year as long as it’s clean enough , it was bought in the sales and is about to grace us with its third year . I also had those bin bags one year , but realised since I put them inside my kitchen bin they got seen very little so used them for giving out bags of gifts around the family .

Edited to say I paid about £1 for my bin bags not the £10 John Lewis is charging !

TulipTuesday · 25/11/2025 16:33

I’m another Christmas ‘tat’ lover.

I get immense pleasure putting everything out along with my decorations.

I have just this minute taken the classy matching mugs off the mug tree and replaced with my mis-matched Christmas ones of various shapes and designs.

I have my Christmas duvet set on, and the cushion covers have been replaced. The indoor doormat that reads ‘Santa stop here’ (even though my children are adults) is out, and my favourite cuddly ghosts have been given Christmas hats to extend their stay in the living room.

I am also planning on getting Christmas tea-towels this year.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 25/11/2025 17:02

I have Christmas tea towels and a pair of oven gloves, plus a variety of mugs and plates, tablecloths, candle holders, place mats and coasters, and several serving dishes. All collected over decades and they all come out every year. There is also some festive loo roll in the loft somewhere.

We also have a Christmas duvet set in burgundy with deer on it, so it gets used in the winter months regardless.

Dogmum1983 · 25/11/2025 08:58

not ashamed to admit I did buy these a few years ago 🤣🤣🤣

Sadly , this thread is aimed at me as I’m a sucker for everything Christmas and I’m THAT person 🤣🤣

As long as they don't cost more, I would enjoy making everyone laugh as I pretend threw the pudding in after dinner to those who had no idea they had been purchased.

LLJETO · 25/11/2025 17:13

I’m extremely disappointed you can’t get the pudding bin bags anymore!

The seagulls in my home city would make short work of those.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 25/11/2025 17:49

My friend changes her decor each season and I have absolutely no idea where she puts everything because her house is smaller than mine (and mine is tiny)! I think most of it must live under her bed.

I have a few 'Christmassy' themed things, bedding throws etc, but must admit to being such an utter slob that I use them all winter long. I like Christmas scented consumables though and will indulge in handwash, room spray, furniture cleaner etc that has a nice hint of cinnamon in. And then there's the candles...

LeopardPrintEverything · 25/11/2025 17:53

I’m that person 🙈
I have Christmas bedding, blankets, mugs, glasses, dishes, napkins, coasters, doormats, tea towels, hand towels, pyjamas, socks, leggings, jumpers, and t-shirts 🙈😂 And thankfully, good big storage boxes and a garage and a loft 🤣 All this thread has done is given me more ideas on what other Christmas replacement items to buy… I want those Christmas pudding bin bags 👀

I'm baffled how people have room to keep all this stuff, extra door mats, bed sets, soap dispensers etc. I see some people "refresh" their decor for each season, endless pumpkins etc for autumn. I'm just jealous of their storage to be honest!

Thisss!!!! I have the storage but I don’t want to fill my house with tat

TAT

stop being so offensive. I might consider your deco choices 'tat' or hideous', but I'm not rude enough to say so.

there is nothing 'tat' about my Christmas homeware thanks.

a few boxes of Christmas decorations & homeware in my large well organised loft does not 'fill my house' with 'stuff'

Pricelessadvice · 25/11/2025 18:15

If it’s stuff you are going to reuse every year, it’s not that bad. Christmas bedding can be used year after year.
It’s the plastic tat that just gets chucked afterwards that I don’t like.

AutumnLeavesFallingFast · 25/11/2025 18:20

GleefulGiraffe · 25/11/2025 13:04

I buy Christmas PJs for the kids and they wear them until they don't fit anymore. The world doesn't end if you wear Christmas PJs in February, it's not like a Christmas jumper where someone might find it a bit strange if you wore it out of season.

I'm quite tempted to get bedding now actually.

If you can afford it, why not, when your kids grow out of the design you can give it to friends/family with younger kids or donate to charity so other youngsters get to enjoy it.

Sortalike · 25/11/2025 18:23

I bought a santa washing up sponge the other week. It is very cute, almost too cute to use, so it may just be "for show".

I did have a fancy Christmas Tea Towel which was "just for show" but DH used it to dry up a badly washed up pot of curry and stained it utter twat so now I use it all year round. Xmas Grin

StewkeyBlue · 25/11/2025 18:24

Katypp · 25/11/2025 09:22

Which presumably you will be 'sending to landfill' after Christmas??
Don't you know everyone who buys 'Christmas tat' gets new every year. That's the MN myth anyway

Of course!

Actually I might throw them away now before they have been used to save having to wash them.

What sort of thing do you mean by tat? Everything anyone’s mentioned so far has been either disposable by nature (bin bags, loo roll etc) or capable of being saved and re-used for many years, which is I imagine what most people do even if the items are made of, shock, horror, plastic.

Fionasapples · 25/11/2025 18:41

Needmorelego · 25/11/2025 13:13

What qualifies as "tat" ?
A lot of what people have mentioned on this thread is normal household objects that happen to be red and have a Christmas tree printed on 🤔

Go and have a look and you'll see.
