Pointless Christmas themed stuff

Each year, retailers bring out more Christmas themed stuff, mainly everyday stuff. Use this thread to post what is the most pointless thing, in your opinion you have seen with Christmas stuff on it.

I will start - The Range sell a dustpan and brush set with Christmas stuff on. Home Bargains - a ceramic soap dispenser shaped as a bauble with Merry Christmas on it.

My mince pie plate with a Christmas tree on it is Spode. Hardly tat then.

I do want one of the Christmassy dustpan & brush sets though - DH uses ours every day when he sweeps up around the cats' litter trays. Maybe I'll get it for him as a present.

Are there any festive rubber gloves around, does anybody know?😂

mashandgravy · 25/11/2025 19:02

Your thread would be more interesting if you asked if anyone actually wasted their money on this stuff and whether it went straight in the bin after Christmas/ New Year was over. And whether they had any conscience about such wasteful and environmentally damaging behaviour.

I disagree. A thread about people's guilty consciences regarding the environment sounds dull AF, but if that's the conversation you want to have, why don't you be the one to start that thread? Instead of being unnecessarily and weirdly hostile about this one.

not ashamed to admit I did buy these a few years ago 🤣🤣🤣

Sadly , this thread is aimed at me as I’m a sucker for everything Christmas and I’m THAT person 🤣🤣

Well done for admitting it Dogmum. You can't be the only one or they wouldn't make this ghastly rubbish - sorry, I mean these seasonal treats.

Go and have a look and you'll see.

Yeah I know what some people mean by "tat" but this thread has people have been saying about ordinary household items like quilt covers and kitchen plates - that just happen to have a Christmasy pattern on them.
"Tat" is one of those Mumsnet words that doesn't seem to actually mean anything.
How can an ordinary household object like a tea towel be "tat".

Thisss!!!! I have the storage but I don’t want to fill my house with tat

So rude.

christmasideers · 25/11/2025 19:15

Between the ages of 12 and 18, every year my gift from my late auntie was some form of Christmas ceramic (ornament/mug/little Santa shaped jar/candle holder) and a bottle of Avon bubble bath. Instead of wrapping paper she wrapped it in a Christmassy tea towel and tied it with ribbon. You’re very welcome to look at those items in my house and judge them as tat but for me they are precious memories of one of my favourite people. I still have most of the tea towels and all of the ceramics and it’s nearly 30 years since I was 18!

My Christmas bedding is over 20 years old (it’s more Nordic than Christmas so gets used all winter), one of my tablecloths is 12 years old and the other two were my mum’s and she had them for as long as I can remember, they definitely appear in Christmas photos from when I was 3! I also have my grandmother’s Christmas mugs from the 70’s/80’s.

I bought Christmas pudding bin bags a few years ago and they have come in very useful over the years for wrapping bikes, a bag full of footballs and other unwieldy items.

A ceramic soap holder will surely be refilled every year? I don’t have one but I wouldn’t consider that disposable landfill fodder. I’m quite partial to the snowman loo roll, brings a bit of Christmas to an otherwise undecorated room so I can imagine a soap dispenser does similar.

Yes. Saw them in the range along with washing up sponges!

What qualifies as "tat" ?
A lot of what people have mentioned on this thread is normal household objects that happen to be red and have a Christmas tree printed on 🤔

It is tat because it is additional plastic shite. You already (presumably) have a soap dispenser, you do not need a second one to use for a few weeks in the year. Ditto another dustpan and brush, curtains, loo seat etc etc etc.

When I bought my Santa hand wash dispenser 10 years ago, I used to buy individual bottles of hand wash that just used to go in the recycling after one use. I don’t actually know if they were recyclable. Now I have a refillable one for general use and as I said, washed the Santa one out to use again.

And again - if things are being used year after year, what’s the issue?

I have a glass Christmas soap dispenser. I bring it out every year, fill it with soap, use it until it's empty and put it away until next year, whereupon I bring the non-Christmas soap dispenser back out, and refill.
Does this meet with your approval?
Who knows, maybe using this 'tat' for one month a year means that the non-Christmas version will last longer anyway.
But I am gathering from your name that you have an agenda anyway, so crack on with your moral superiority

It's MN speak for 'I'm better than you'.

What if they aren't plastic?
Are we only allowed to own one of an item at a time?
😂

If this thread was an actual real life conversation in a coffee morning or something I think by now I would be running around the room yelling "taaaaaaaaaaaat" to wind certain snobs people up.

I think it will probably be easier all-round if @SheinIsShite gives us a list of permitted items, then we can check against our stocks (because I certainly won't be buying anything new this year) and use accordingly.

the80sweregreat · 25/11/2025 19:47

I like the Christmas goods. I don’t buy them myself ( but I did have to buy some tinsel this year for the first time in years ) but the shops look festive and it is cheerful. Come January with bleak weather and nothing to look forwards to , it is a small beacon of light amongst the gloom isn’t it!

Cakeandcardio · 25/11/2025 20:33

Well when you think about it, putting a fake tree up in the living room with lots of plastic hanging from it is batshit

the80sweregreat · 25/11/2025 20:35

I do put my plastic tree up , but it’s a dust collector and not as flash as other people’s more superior efforts.
I do like taking it down and having a clean up after new year though.

I think The Range sells them in the same design as the dustpan n brush I mentioned in the OP. The dustpan from what I can recall was a dark cream with images in green and dark red. Think the rubber gloves were dark red at the top with the dark cream design at the bottom.

I think I win this thread.

Christmas pudding themed bin bags. Because why not?

Edited

I've used these before to wrap up big presents or keep a person's presents together 😆 cheaper than giant gift bags, easier than wrapping paper & get used as bin bags afterwards

the80sweregreat · 25/11/2025 21:00

I like a festive shopping bag ‘ for life’ because it’s not just for Christmas.

Netcurtainnelly · 25/11/2025 21:24

Everything.

Jiski · 25/11/2025 21:25

We have Christmas soap dispenser that we use every December. It’s fun for guests and kids and just loves in the bathroom cupboard the rest of the time.

scalt · 25/11/2025 21:31

Christmas netballs. Yes, really! Easter as well.
