Pointless Christmas themed stuff

Notyouthful · 25/11/2025 06:51

Each year, retailers bring out more Christmas themed stuff, mainly everyday stuff. Use this thread to post what is the most pointless thing, in your opinion you have seen with Christmas stuff on it.

I will start - The Range sell a dustpan and brush set with Christmas stuff on. Home Bargains - a ceramic soap dispenser shaped as a bauble with Merry Christmas on it.

I have a massive loft so I keep the Christmas stuff up there. DS has moved to a double bed so he got a ‘new’ Christmas bedding set from Vinted and the rather faded single bedding set was given away on the local free cycle group. That’s all I’ve bought this year, everything else is reused.

I want those bin bags though! I would be very happy to get them in work secret Santa. At least I’d use them unlike random gift set from boots.

rainbowunicorn22 · 25/11/2025 13:57

i like the bin bags would make me smile if i saw them at a kerb side waiting for collection!
its nice to have some Christmassy stuff but they do go OTT with it

If people didn't buy this tat then retailers wouldn't produce it.

Your thread would be more interesting if you asked if anyone actually wasted their money on this stuff and whether it went straight in the bin after Christmas/ New Year was over. And whether they had any conscience about such wasteful and environmentally damaging behaviour.

Edited

'Waste' is judgemental.

what you spend your money on I might consider wasteful, but you obviously don't.

i don't have the things the OP described, but I do have Chrudtmas Themed houseware. No I don't 'bin it' at the end of the season, why would u? I enjoy getting it out each year.

what exactly is wasteful & environmentally damaging about my behaviour?

I don't do lots of things others do, but I don't bang on about it.

I’m not baffled because you know, lofts are a thing, but I’m jealous. We don’t currently have much storage space but I would like to change things round a bit throughout the year, not in a major way but a couple of ceramic pumpkin candle jars for Autumn, a feather tree for Easter (DH is Swedish so this is his tradition), light coloured cushion covers for summer, warmer colours for winter. We just don’t have the space for the ‘off-season’ stuff. One day…

I have multiple cupboards for storage and lots of space. Unfortunately this means I pile shit in there all year and now need to go in and remove everything to get my decorations out. Got a single bed frame currently, 6 bin bags of clothes and a bunch of old toys on top of it all. 💔 I am very grateful to have storage but I wish I was better organised😂

I've bought these before they're great!
I saw the festive dustpan and brush in B&M and did think that was daft!

I'm baffled how people have room to keep all this stuff, extra door mats, bed sets, soap dispensers etc. I see some people "refresh" their decor for each season, endless pumpkins etc for autumn. I'm just jealous of their storage to be honest!

I have a very organised loft space!

There is a thread like this every year, which usually morphs into a self-congratulary excuse to parade your moral superiority because you don't buy 'Christmas tat' (I know no-one has said this yet, but someone will for sure).
Can I offer an alternative view?
Presumably the haters go to bed during the Christmas holiday, have a shower, dry dishes etc? So what's the issue with using Christmas themed bedding, towels etc for December?
Specifically the Christmas bin bags - do pps not have a bin bag on the go at present opening time? So a bin bag will be used regardless of whether it'sa pudding print or plain black.
Of course, critical to the pearl clutching is the somewhat weird assumption that people spend a lot of money on bedding etc and then throw it away after Christmas, which clearly is rubbish.
A MN classic every year

👏🏻 exactly!!

WhatAreYouDoingSundayBaby · 25/11/2025 14:10

I always think this about salt and pepper shakers, they're a pain to fill/empty so the thought of doing extra ones is mad to me 😂

I completely agree with this and have the same thoughts.
Personally I wouldnt buy a Christmas themed dust pan and brush (as where would i store it?) but Christmas bedding? Why not? It gets used throughout advent and stored for next year.
I dont buy Christmas PJs as the kids will grow out of them by next year and get jumpers from family or charity shops.
Nobody had these thoughts when people bought Christmas napkins (which have been around much longer than a lot of other 'tat'), "shudda got white that can be used all year round'.
If you have the products out and use them then you'd be using something anyway. I presume most people store items for further use. People who are wasteful, will be watefull regardless.
Anyhoo I have a sudden urge to go to B&M... I wonder if work will accept that as an emergency?

They would be rude not to!!

BarnacleBeasley · 25/11/2025 14:13

My 4 year old would like me to buy him Christmas-themed cushions from Morrison's. I said we already had cushions at home and he said 'not round ones with Christmas things on', which was a fairly compelling argument.

Needmorelego · 25/11/2025 08:55

I am a renter. I don't own my flat.
This means I'm not allowed to decorate, put up pictures or shelves.
Seasonal themed stuff is a way I can put a little personality into my home.

As an aside, I've been seeing a lot of adverts for double sided stuff that you can rinse & reuse that apparently doesn't leave marks or damage paint/wall paper.

i haven't tried it (yet) myself but seems like it would be great for someone jn your position.

fortunately when I rented a normal level of living was expected, so it was no bother to put up pictures & shelves etc ! Likewise when I rented out properties, I expected my tenants to LIVE jn them doing things like this. I was also fine with them having pets.

some landlords are too restrictive..

sprigatito · 25/11/2025 14:20

I’ve just bought a little gingerbread house soap dispenser, and we have Christmas salt and pepper shakers, doormat, cushion covers, tea towels and oven gloves…no Christmas bedding yet, but I’m tempted. Have given the pudding bin liners as a joke gift in the past, also loo roll with Christmas jokes on it.

Couldn’t give two tugs of a dead dog’s cock what the MN “ crisp white linen” brigade thinks about it. 😆 Life is quite grim enough, thanks. I’ll take my joy and silliness wherever I can find it.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 25/11/2025 14:20

To be fair, I think the same about Christmas themed things. Why would you get something you can only get out really Nov-Jan.

But I also have acquired a large selection of pumpkin shaped crockery, table mats, decorations and a lovely golden pumpkin teapot that comes out August-October. Not because I am a particularly big fan of Halloween, but I love the harvest season as a gardener, and it makes it really feel like a celebration of that particular time of year. It is tradition on halloween to have pumpkin soup in a pumpkin bowl, made in the pumpkin dutch oven, and topped off with a home made pumpkin spiced latte. Everything fits into 2 storage cubes and is no bother to get out and put away and it's stuff I use year in year out.

So I do now feel very hypocritical. I think if it's something you'll use every year and it's something you treasure then it's worthwhile if it makes you happy, but I still feel that things like christmas dust pans and brushes are a step too far.

I have a bright red shower curtain with a cartoony rudolph on it. The kids (23 and 24 now!) always know when it's the first of December in our house.
Bought it as an antidote to all the "bah humbug, xmas tat" conversations at work 12 years ago.

So... careful... I'm eying up a stupid elf bathmat next. 😜

👍🏻🧑‍🎄🧑‍🎄

we need a Christmas elf!!

My dad always used to buy these for the wrapping paper and detritus on Christmas morning 😂😂

Why not??

if you're going to use rubbish bags anyway, why not fun ones? 🎅🏼

Boudy · 25/11/2025 14:25

I am admitting that I have 2 Gingerbreadmen soap dispensers and some crockery/ glasses/ biscuit jar/ 3 tins. Have had all for around 20 years, except for soap dispensers( 4 years!).

I have a Christmas cushion - red one at the moment, JOY when I turn it around in December.

No storage needed.

I saw some Christmas curtains once. Imagine having so much time on your hands you change your curtains for a few weeks.

Ideal time to get your curtains dry cleaned.
(But some people's curtains are minging - yes sis they are if you are reading - so I guess they never get swapped out)

youalright · 25/11/2025 14:43

I love Christmas tat 😁
