If you had to be lost in a forest, and you had to be lost with a bear or a random man, would you choose the bear or the man ?

It’s supposed to be a thought experiment.
The answer is not as important as the fact that a man will likely immediately respond “another person” but a woman will usually have to give pause.

Yes. A man would choose a woman unquestioningly.

Redwaterr · 23/11/2025 12:46

I find wild bears more scary than men personally. The bear would basically have to be killed for my own survival.

The man might be nice, he might also be able to offer some protection and support.

And if all went badly and I had to kill the man, I feel like I'd find it easier to kill a man than a bear.

PodMom · 23/11/2025 12:49

How good are my orientation skills and chances of finding civilisation?

because even if a black bear has less chances of attacking me than a man the bear also has less chances of leading me to safety.

GooseyGandalf · 23/11/2025 13:04

Tough choice: based on the literature of my childhood, I’d choose the bear, but I read a fair bit of smut since then and quite fancy a bit of hot sex in a remote log cabin.

Rupert - brave, smart definitely a good choice
Pooh Bear - a bit tiresomely dim. I’d probably choose the man
Teddy Bear Robinson - slightly less dim, but a childhood favorite so we’d have a lot to catch up on.
Paddington - depends if he’s willing to share a marmalade sandwich
Yogi Bear - he’ll steal my picnic, but on the other hand probably lead me straight to the park ranger. And that guy has a bad temper and a gun.
The Bernstein Bears - only if I was certain they weren’t the Goldilocks bears.
Baloo - definitely worth hanging out with.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 23/11/2025 13:27

On the assumption that my dog would be with me, I'd choose the bear.

It's not a small number.

One study shows that a third of men would rape if they thought they could get away with it.

It's a massive problem, made worse by 'nice guys' who don't believe them/their relatives/their friends/their favourite football player are rapists because <insert reason blaming the woman here>.

Yes but unless no chance of either of us surviving / being found there is a risk that he won’t get away with it eg he lives and my body is found / I also survive and tell. So not sure the 1/3 applies.

So esp given my age (old) and that I am very strong I think under 10% of being raped.

Why? A bear would kill a dog.

Sorry OP, but a bit of a tasteless thread when there's a current news story about a party of 11 schoolchildren being attacked by a grizzly bear in Canada.

Maybe they've not seen the news?
This is the first I'm hearing of it myself.

What has age got to do with rape?

I can't conceive of any circumstances where I would be in that position but in the most literal, immediate sense, I would choose the man. But I fully, 100% understand the argument and understand why women would take their chances with a bear. I remember the horrible creeping sense of inevitability when I read Our Endless Numbered Days, and how that sense was based on real world knowledge.

However I would prefer to choose neither.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 23/11/2025 13:43

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/11/2025 13:35

Why? A bear would kill a dog.

Depends on the dog. Livestock guarding dog so I'd take my chances on the bear not risking it, because there'd likely be much easier prey for it than a little old lady with a scary dog.
Could say the same for the man I suppose, but I'd worry that he might have a gun, so I'll take the bear anyway.

niadainud · 23/11/2025 13:44

Newbutoldfather · 23/11/2025 10:37

This is one of those stupid performative questions because, in real life, close to 100% of women would choose the man.

Being stuck next to an erratically behaved carnivore who may attack you, either through fear or hunger, and kill you, versus being stuck with a random man, who might even turn out to be nice and good fun and whose chance of actually killing you is probably less than 0.01%, isn’t a real choice

Exactly. Totally performative. Of course everyone would choose the man.

Let's put it another way: you're in a city centre with lots of people of both sexes around when you see a bear. You weren't previously screaming and running away from all the men, were you?

WhosAfraidOfVirginalWolves · 23/11/2025 13:47

Man. Especially if we're talking about being properly lost in the wilderness. Most likely won't attack you, and would probably be quite helpful for survival (or company at least). Even the sweetest Sun bear probably wouldn't help you survive (never mind the grizzlies).

Or bungle from rainbow, although he seemed to have a bit of a sinister side come to think of it

Bungle is so wet! I’d take my chances that a man couldn’t possibly be that annoying…

… then again…

phantomofthepopera · 23/11/2025 10:47

I’d choose Bear, only if it was Bear Grylls. He’d be handy to be lost in the woods with.

Just watch out if he offers you a warm drink.

EdithStourton · 23/11/2025 13:57

Depends on the species of bear.

In many years of walking in the woods (I've never yet got lost) I've only ever problems with a man once, and he was someone I knew (if a repellent 16yr old counts as a man.

But I get the point that a man wouldn't hesitate to give an answer - unless he was a photographer patiently perched in a hide waiting for a bear to saunter past.

Elisheva · 23/11/2025 13:58

In my head the question is would you rather be attacked and killed by a bear or by a man. And I choose the bear.
Yes either of them might not be interested in attacking or killing me, but I can’t tell by looking.
And if I met a woman alone in the woods I would, without hesitation, approach her and ask for help.

Chiseltip · 23/11/2025 14:02

Elisheva · 23/11/2025 10:22

Bear. Bears are predictable and they don’t torture.

🤣 you don't know much about bears.

Leaveittogod · 23/11/2025 14:03

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/11/2025 10:26

Bear, assuming it was made by Lindt. Even better if it was a sloth of Lindt bears.

Lindt bears for me

I think I have encountered a different type of man to a lot of women on this thread. Ime, most men are not nice. Most will not murder or rape, but they will engage in low-level sexual harassment and/or assault.

In a recent study by the UN, 97% of women said they'd been sexually harassed, so either most men are not nice or a minority of men are harassing and assaulting most women. The former makes the most sense to me.

0% of bears would sexually harass me. Plus, why is the man in the forest? I assume, if I were lost, I'd be deep inside a large, dense forest. The bear belongs there. Why is a lone man there?

Maybe it’s just me, but I’d choose low level sexual harassment over being mauled by a bear any day.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 23/11/2025 14:26

Depends, am I physically with them both?

If I have to be next to them, then man.

If I'm just existing in the same forest, then bear. Becaue the bear is most likely to want to avoid me as much as I want to avoid it.

If I'm the only food in the forest, then that's a different ball game, and I'd choose man.

Basically I feel like a lone man is more likely to attack me than a lone bear - given same variables of space and time. If attack is inevitable from the bear, I'd choose the man, because I'd be more likely to survive.

Southernecho · 23/11/2025 14:30

Defo the Bear, the man would initially be very nice, i'm sure, but then after a while, stuck in the woods, no sex, would turn.....

JetFlight · 23/11/2025 14:37

I’d take the random man. Hopefully he’ll be anature loving decent guy who likes walking in the woods. If by chance, he becomes predatory, I’m hoping a nearby rock would help me out.
Not much chance of using a rock on a big bear and getting away.

smallglassbottle · 23/11/2025 14:38

I'd choose the bear. I'm autistic and get on better with animals. There'd be no small talk and we could forage for berries together.
