What 'house' things do you really love?

I'm not talking about big fancy mansions with swimming pools and cinema rooms here - just things about your house or other people's that you really enjoy.

For me it's bright yellow kitchens! Not sure why but I love a homely yellow kitchen with kids drawings on the wall.

I also love a big wooden kitchen table.

Not sure if this counts but I love a cat in a house. Especially a purry lap cat!

I also really like those internal doors with glass panes that usually go between a sitting room and dining room. I don't know why.

And a proper front door with glass panes and a porch. Proper porches are brilliant.

Boot room with shower and sink by the back door.

ArielHawksquill · 18/11/2025 12:40

I love a warm and clean and beautiful bathroom, specifically a decent shower. Doesn’t have to be big, just gorgeous

Meadowfinch · 18/11/2025 12:41

My kitchen faces east, and has French windows and sky lights. Early mornings this time of year I can sit and watch the dawn across the water meadows, while clutching my first cup of coffee.

Peaceful, warm & beautiful. Sets me up for the day. 😊

I love big windows with wide sills, and a big deck (which apparently sounds like 'dick' in my accent, which leads to some misunderstandings. . .)

And lots of storage space. Oh, and a proper, big linen cupboard. And a proper pantry.

Mt563 · 18/11/2025 12:58

A big enough kitchen to hang out in, love cooking whilst friends are around without being separated. Also love helping friends prepare food when I'm visiting. Kitchen is the heart of the home, right?

CointreauVersial · 18/11/2025 12:59

I love a real fire.

It pains me that our current house doesn't even have a fireplace.....we are planning to move in the next year or so, and an open fire is top of the wish list.

NotableI · 18/11/2025 14:36

A walk in shower instead of one over a bath. I don’t have one and I covet one!

OrlandointheWilderness · 18/11/2025 14:39

Cost. I’m all about cosy. Log burner, bookcase, soft lighting and candles. I love my dresser and I adore my little kitchen. It has a pantry cupboard and a nook above.
we live in a small, 350 year old cottage with outbuildings. It’s absolutely perfect.

smallglassbottle · 18/11/2025 14:40

Cosy vintage stuff. People say my home looks like Beamish, so that could mean cosy and quaint, or poverty stricken and out of date 😂

hattie43 · 18/11/2025 14:41

Wood burning stoves or open fires

OrlandointheWilderness · 18/11/2025 14:41

This is my kitchen. For so many people it would be awful as it’s small, but I just love it. I’d love to put a range in however as I love cooking. And maybe Yorkshire flagstones!

A sitting area with no TV. Currently dont have this but plan to have it soon once we finish a project! I just want a snug little area with a comfy seat, warm light and a bookshelf!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 18/11/2025 14:47

Cornicing. Particularly on high Victorian or Georgian ceilings. I think it just frames the rooms so beautifully.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 18/11/2025 14:49

A wood burner is number 1 in my book. We have a far-too-small council house and the wood burning stove is the one thing that makes it a home we would never want to leave

crappycrapcrap · 18/11/2025 14:50

I love
my plate rack on the kitchen wall
Sage green windows - also green inside
my shower screen - it’s bevelled glass
free standing bath
window seat
huge fireplace
massive hallway cupboard to hide our junk

I like other houses that have rugs everywhere that look good - mine always crumple

NutmegsMum · 18/11/2025 14:51

I love anything with a mix of Scandi-maximalism decor! It just makes me so happy.

When I was small, I loved being taken to other peoples houses that had (as I thought) interesting ornaments, pictures, books etc. Things from travelling and daily life. I loved seeing all those things - truly a treasure trove. As I am older, I do love a streamlined and clean home, but I still have areas of these treasures - all these things we have that define our journey in life - even the childrens little presents (although I did relegate a freakishly looking leprachaun my son bought me whilst on a school trip to a dusty corner in the drinks cupboard). I feel the identity of a home and the occupants is what I love most - not a showhome or Next catalogue home.

Cats
Books

Strongly agree with the yellow kitchen! Bonus if it's a room that gets a lot of sunlight.

We have a long painted and carved wooden coat rack that we found in an antique shop, previously from a canal boat, I love it

Beautiful designs on metal or ceramic doorknobs/locks

I feel exactly the same but I'm so sad as my cat died 3 months ago and the house just isn't the same without him.

He was part of the fabric of the household and the rhythm of our home life.
I miss him every day

Jemimapuddleduk · 18/11/2025 15:11

Colour, art on the walls, books.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 18/11/2025 15:15

My white Roman blinds. So simple, such a delight.

Tintackedsea · 18/11/2025 15:16

Paintings, lots of plants, personality. I can’t be doing with show home style grey.

Poxornotpox · 18/11/2025 15:51

@hideouskinky I'm sorry to hear that. Our cat died in July but it was time. She was 18, senile and yowling all through the night.
I desperately want to get a couple of kittens but have to wait until next summer holidays when we will all be home for 5 or so weeks!
