What 'house' things do you really love?

I'm not talking about big fancy mansions with swimming pools and cinema rooms here - just things about your house or other people's that you really enjoy.

For me it's bright yellow kitchens! Not sure why but I love a homely yellow kitchen with kids drawings on the wall.

I also love a big wooden kitchen table.

I veer towards minimalism, but there are one or two bits I’ve inherited that I enjoy. I need clear surfaces in the kitchen though, because I’m not fond enough of cleaning to keep moving stuff.

I like my Roman blinds.

DustyMaiden · 18/11/2025 19:18

Arched windows, don’t know why. Staircases in the middle of the room.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/11/2025 19:28

Truly comfortable sofas you can snuggle up on. With cosy throws.

And absolutely no soulless minimalism.

DoYouReally · 18/11/2025 19:46

I love a really good laundry room....completely seperate from rest of the house with room for ironing and storage etc.

I don't think this really counts because it's an item of furniture or possibly a toy but:

An absolutely enormous, real pony sized Victorian style rocking horse. One of the ones on kind of spring loaded runners that you can really gallop backwards and forwards on.

My friend had one when we were growing up. I don't think it was actually antique Victorian because In my memory he looked friendlier and more life like than the 19th century ones.

I used to have one as a child in the early 70s. Db and I used to love it, it was really big! Dm made us sell it to help pay for new bicycles when I was about 10.

I love houses where you can see that the owners have had fun with it and haven't followed trends. My best friend's house is my favourite house because it's so 'her'. There's colour all over the place and accessories from all the countries she's travelled to. Of course, lots of people love the all beige look that is popular right now, but we are currently house hunting and I'm shocked by how many houses look identical to eachother inside!

There’s a make-up artist on Insta, I think her house was featured in Style magazine recently. Her dressing table…

My house is a tiny cottage next to the church. You wouldn't know it is here from the outside until you step through a wooden gate in the tall stone wall and there's my home surrounded by it's own little garden. I've made the garden a haven for wildlife and it's always busy especially with birds splashing in the bird bath. As I'm writing this the church bell ringers are practicing, brides come and go in summer and every hour the church clock chimes as though it is the heartbeat of our house.

In the kitchen we have stained glass window that my husband made. I like to sit beside it, sun streaming through and read my book. In the mornings I sit in the covered area under the porch with a coffee. I love everything about my tiny secret house.

Edited

That sounds utterly fabulous 😊

Nice wide roomy lounges rather than corridor style ones - great bathrooms , when we lived in Copenhagen I had a fantastic huge laundry room ( 18 ft x 14 ft) complete with inbuilt hanging lines and storage shelves - loved that even though it was a bit dingy as in basement - also had 2 huge storeage rooms down there

ticktockitsNCtime · 18/11/2025 20:45

Wooden floors (especially old ones) with kilim or Persian rugs.

Agas (one day….)

Big scrubbed old table in the kitchen

Wooden sash windows

Freestanding bath

Floaty muslin curtains

Very big potted plants

winterbluess · 18/11/2025 20:48

I like big farmhouse tables, and window seats you can sit in with a lovely view. Unfortunately I have neither 🤣

spiderlight · 18/11/2025 20:50

Lots of books, plants and interesting art and ornaments. A cottagey garden, and ideally a dog and/or a cat.

Samelly1 · 18/11/2025 20:54

Love those tiled hallways like mosaic style Victorian ones, love a high ceiling and tall windows.
Really like houses that’s decor is mismatched like rustic wooden table and mismatched chairs and random colour scatter cushion on the sofa etc, like not too cluttered but not show home with matching drawers and tv unit etc

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/11/2025 20:56

In my house, my favourite thing is my sliding pocket doors and particularly the view through them into my lounge and out into my garden.
my skylight and sitting underneath it to drink my coffee in the morning
we have unusual Y shape stairs which are an interesting feature as well.
plus I love my big green leafy tiles in my bathroom

Thebigonesgetaway · 18/11/2025 20:57

In the summer, a big garden, with a large patio that is filled with lots and lots of different plants, and comfy chairs with big cushions.

in winter, a log burner, soft lighting, candles, throws and a big comfy sofa. A warm cosy room with the crackling of the fire, and somewhere to sit, that feels like a bed.

A wood burner is number 1 in my book. We have a far-too-small council house and the wood burning stove is the one thing that makes it a home we would never want to leave

This - my wood burning stove is the best thing I ever had installed seven years ago (over and above the central heating system I had put in five months after I moved in over 30 years ago), It glows, it radiates lovely heat and is so calming to watch...

Tigerbalmshark · 18/11/2025 21:02

Half decent shower - we renovated our bathroom just before we moved and I miss it! Current bathroom is about 30 years old and just not as nice. New bathroom is on my to do list, it makes a huge difference.

Corner sofa - no space in my current living room, but planning an extension and that will be the first thing I put in my newly-enlarged living room.

Boot room - going in the extension!

Sash windows - sadly we’re in a 1920s house in a conservation area so can’t put those in 🤣

Nice garden - working on this! I love sitting outside with a coffee and enjoying the sunshine, and looking at all of my plants thriving.

BiddyPopthe2nd · 18/11/2025 21:03

I love a window seat, especially in a diner side of a kitchen or in a sitting room. To sit and read a book in peace and quiet, preferably in the sunshine.

Also a utility cupboard - big enough to stack the washing machine and tumble drier, and space for a shelf for cleaning liquids etc on the side and to put the mop, long brush, rechargeable Dyson, small brush and pan etc under the shelf to the side. Just all neat and tidy behind a closed door (I dream of a proper walk-in room with a big sink, tiled floor, space for ironing, housemaids dolly (? The 5 or so wooden bars from a frame that can be raised and lowered for drying laundry indoors) etc. …when I get my grown up house).

Oak
Stained glass
An inglenook
Old fashioned tinkly bells on a pulley

MySweetGeorgina · 18/11/2025 21:05

@Hernamesnoelle lovely thread! I have a big yellow kitchen with a farmhouse kitchen table 😁 it’s my favourite room in the house (front rooms are small and dark, bedrooms are meh, bathroom tiny)

i bought the house on the merit of the south facing yellow kitchen

a thing about other people’s houses I love is people who have bright green rooms, and/or very high ceilings

ValBiro · 18/11/2025 21:05

@ticktockitsNCtime agree with Persian rugs/killims

Proper shutters. Not the ones that are like wooden Venetian blinds, proper door-hinged window shutters

An austere bathroom

A kitchen table to have breakfast and lunch at

Real floorboards, Victorian mosaic tiles in the hallway, unfinished staircases (eg carpets taken up and old paint showing!)

Original art, prints, photos on the walls

Plants!

Its my grandma's and my childhood home really, I wonder if most people are drawn to a fascimile of what they grew up with?

NoEffingWay · 18/11/2025 21:07

@FayawayTry Northern Soul Scents, they have a new wax melt which smells just like an open fire, it’s called ‘Chimney Sweep’

NoEffingWay · 18/11/2025 21:11

You may have guessed, but I love having a clean and tidy, cosy house with a wax melt on the go. I may have a teensy problem, and have them all to pick from Blush
