What 'house' things do you really love?

I'm not talking about big fancy mansions with swimming pools and cinema rooms here - just things about your house or other people's that you really enjoy.

For me it's bright yellow kitchens! Not sure why but I love a homely yellow kitchen with kids drawings on the wall.

I also love a big wooden kitchen table.

I have a yellow and dark orange hallway that makes me happy.

cannotfindanickname · 18/11/2025 15:59

Books. Art on the walls.

mondaytosunday · 18/11/2025 16:02

A fireplace. Love mine and am always drawn to it in other peoples’ houses.

Advocodo · 18/11/2025 16:03

Books and i especially love browsing other people’s bookshelves!

BrightMintTea · 18/11/2025 17:40

I love big windows and lots of natural light. Nothing fancy, just bright rooms that feel airy.

FalseSpring · 18/11/2025 17:44

Antiques. They seem to have gone out of fashion, but I love some of the old bits of furniture that I inherited or bought many years ago, they all have stories and hold memories for me.

Cornishmumofone · 18/11/2025 17:48

I love a bay window with a seat… even better if there’s a nice view or lots of pedestrians going by.

NoMoreHotHols · 18/11/2025 17:55

Lovely old herringbone parquet flooring.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 18/11/2025 18:08

I like white and neutral colours and an uncluttered, fairly minimalist, Scandi-ish style. Not too austere - rugs and nice soft furnishings, pale wood etc. I know some people think it's dead boring, but to me it's soothing and serene and it relaxes my busy brain! I find cluttered rooms in intense colours oppressive.

I'd love a proper linen cupboard with lots of real linen bedding, and a boot room.

When I was small, I loved being taken to other peoples houses that had (as I thought) interesting ornaments, pictures, books etc. Things from travelling and daily life. I loved seeing all those things - truly a treasure trove. As I am older, I do love a streamlined and clean home, but I still have areas of these treasures - all these things we have that define our journey in life - even the childrens little presents (although I did relegate a freakishly looking leprachaun my son bought me whilst on a school trip to a dusty corner in the drinks cupboard). I feel the identity of a home and the occupants is what I love most - not a showhome or Next catalogue home.

Love this! We used to visit elderly neighbours who had a hand grenade perched on the edge of a shelf - I was terrified 😂
I recently downsized from the family home to a small flat due to divorce but I have a bookcase with all my treasures on - it’s just Ikea Billy bookcase but it’s my museum.
The thing I really miss is my open fire. I have to buy smoke-scented diffusers and candles but it’ll never be the same. I recently emailed a diffuser company, to be told they’ve discontinued my favourite 😭

I would love a laundry room preferably attached to an upstairs laundry chute . A big porch and hall with staircase in the middle and wraparound landing with rooms off it . Each bedroom with a dressing room and bathroom . Ah well now all I need is land and money.

manicpixieschemegirl · 18/11/2025 18:18

Cottage style windows and French doors.

A a real fireplace.

A free standing kitchen.

evtheria · 18/11/2025 18:21

I love bookcases full of books, real paintings, wood floors, and gardens/tiny backyards with lots of different plants!

MomsGotInk · 18/11/2025 18:24

Plants, dogs padding around, interesting wall art. Also my ornamental skull collection in the kitchen…😆💀

I would also love this.

In my house, like a pp, I love my wee "museum" which is also an Ikea bookshelf. It has my grandpa's ARP handbell from the war, a Doulton lady of my gran's, my baby shoes, a handful of random bits randomly kept by the kids over the years, a silver napkin ring from the British Empire exhibition (or something like that) in 1924 that was my great-grandma's, a shot glass from our honeymoon hotel.....
I really want to write labels for everything

Redheadedstepchild · 18/11/2025 18:27

I don't think this really counts because it's an item of furniture or possibly a toy but:

An absolutely enormous, real pony sized Victorian style rocking horse. One of the ones on kind of spring loaded runners that you can really gallop backwards and forwards on.

My friend had one when we were growing up. I don't think it was actually antique Victorian because In my memory he looked friendlier and more life like than the 19th century ones.

WaaWaaPedal · 18/11/2025 18:35

Lamps 😊 We have lots of lamps on smart plugs that automatically go on at sunset and off at bedtime (i.e. 10.30pm 😆).

Squirrelsnut · 18/11/2025 18:38

A slightly shabby-but-stylish, boho flavour. Nothing OTT. And bay windows with a real wood floor.

hireme · 18/11/2025 18:40

Lamps. Hate the big light 🤣

WonderingWanda · 18/11/2025 18:42

Soft lighting in a living room.

Good light, its so lovely when you get sunlight filling a living space.

Gardens with plants shrubs and leaves rather than sterile fake grass /new build lawns / concrete jungle.

A mix of real wood and modern touches.

Forthismoment · 18/11/2025 18:50

Lamps and cushions (everywhere)
Large table and a sofa in the kitchen
Wood burner and open fire

Lucky to have the above but in an ideal world I would also have a hallway, a downstairs loo, a utility room, french doors and an outside verranda!

This is my kitchen. For so many people it would be awful as it’s small, but I just love it. I’d love to put a range in however as I love cooking. And maybe Yorkshire flagstones!

I LOVE the books in the arch!
Lovely kitchen

TheeNotoriousPIG · 18/11/2025 19:00

I am lucky enough to have what I consider to be a ‘proper’ porch, i.e. one that is big enough to keep a parcel box in one side, so that the dogs and I don’t fall over it every time we go out! It’s also big enough for us to shelter in when it is raining (one prefers to stay dry, thank-you very much!). I also have a boot room, a downstairs loo by the back door (hopefully, I might squeeze a shower in there one day), a TV-less sitting room, a utility room (I just need a laundry chute!) and what was probably a pantry at one point but is now used as storage space for vast quantities of dog food and kitchen gadgets. The boiler cupboard could probably be used as a linen cupboard, but it’s currently home to my toiletries and a beehive that is waiting to be built.

Antiques and dark furniture (but not too much!) make the place feel homely. I particularly like the demi-lune table that occupies my large 1930’s hallway, and the giant old-fashioned typewriter that lives on top of it! I like panelling, cornicing, ceiling roses, shutters and a vast quantity of bookcases. I love looking through other people’s books! Also, art and musical instruments make it feel homely (especially a piano or something like a cello!). Soft lighting is better than the Blackpool Illuminations-style Big Lights.

I like a garden with a lot of pollinator flowers, so it is busy with bees and butterflies in the spring and summer. Ducks or chickens pottering about would be a bonus! A well-tended greenhouse and a kitchen garden would be nice. I’d love a bigger kitchen- big enough for a dining table and chairs- and a range cooker.

In theory, I like open fires and woodburners, but I’m not keen on having to keep topping them up and cleaning them out. Oh, and I love a bit of colour- not just 50 shades of grey!

Keffert · 18/11/2025 19:03

My friend’s house is so lovely. It manages to be simultaneously uncluttered but still have lots of personal and interesting things to look at in every room. It’s immaculate but still homely. I find it a really calming place to be but I can’t seem to recreate it in my own house.

MyBirthdayMonth · 18/11/2025 19:07

My little dressing room. I only spend about ten minutes in it each day, but it's always a pleasure.
