What 'house' things do you really love?

I'm not talking about big fancy mansions with swimming pools and cinema rooms here - just things about your house or other people's that you really enjoy.

For me it's bright yellow kitchens! Not sure why but I love a homely yellow kitchen with kids drawings on the wall.

I also love a big wooden kitchen table.

love houses where you can see that the owners have had fun with it and haven't followed trends. My best friend's house is my favourite house because it's so 'her'. There's colour all over the place

I agree with this. I like houses where I can visit & then could tell you a bit about the owner.

My nightmare is everything grey. I came across a house on RightMove once and even the kids’ bedroom & the Christmas tree were grey. So sad.

SO many! Things I have and love:

Inglenook fireplace

Hand painted antique Hungarian dresser base (folk art/floral)

Numerous antiques, all cheap and most rustic but much loved, including my Nan's Edwardian doll's pram and loads of beautiful hand-painted china.

Waaaayyyy too many books

Interior magazines by the hundred (a huge passion)

Character - my cottage is really small but looks similar to the one from The Holiday, it's really cute

Cherry blossom tree in the garden - the pink blossom is glorious

Things I love in others' houses and would adore in mine:

High ceilings

Lots of natural light

A garage for storage

Far reaching views

Outbuildings of any kind

Thatched roof (had this years ago, adored it, had to be sold in my divorce)

A spacious bedroom with room for wardrobes, or even a dressing room

A utility room

Boot/dog room

Symmetry

A staircase with banisters to decorate at Christmas, the kind you can sweep down in a Frock. Mine is typically cottagey, ineven steep, narrow and between walls with a door at the bottom)

A hallway (front door here opens straight into the living room)

Upstairs landing big enough for more than one person at a time and maybe a cupboard for storage

Spacious bathrooms

No damp/mould

Finally, one thing I had when we built a house years ago and genuinely miss: central vacuum system. It was absolutely awesome, if I ever built another house I'd 100% put one in again.

I love my yellow kitchen. It has a kitchen table in there, there is room to cook when others are in the house. I also love my old, pine, dresser. It once had nasty cream gloss on it, stained with nicotine. I paid £30 for it, delivered. I have stripped it back to the bare wood, painted the lower half and the top bit is just the old pine, as is the cabinet top. It currently has books and fairy lights on it. I have had it 6 years now and still love it.

80smonster · 18/11/2025 21:28

My friend has a scullery that sits behind the kitchen. It’s absolutely genius, the bins, dishwasher, plates, cutlery etc. all live there. When we can afford a mansion, ours will definitely have a scullery.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 18/11/2025 21:29

I once saw a posh house for sale with its own flower arranging room. Ooh, yes please!

Specialagentblond · 18/11/2025 21:29

We have a wood burner and our sitting room is all about textures and cosy feels with some glimmery bits. I don’t care how chavvy it all is. I love sitting in the chaise part of my g plan sofa with the fire on sipping wine and doing crochet or watching something. Particularly if there’s a howling storm outside.

I am also disproportionately jealous of people who have a sink in their utility room.

also love a vintage tiled hallway

MsSmartShoes · 18/11/2025 21:30

Eclectic houses with treasures and books collected over time because they are interesting- not because they match a theme.

StrumpersPlunkett · 18/11/2025 21:31

I love a lit fire, it makes me feel happy even when things are pretty shit.

I love a bath in a cosy room with candles lit (I do not like a bath in a bedroom!)

Deep squishy sofa, In a room that makes you feel happy to tuck up your feet onto the sofa and relax.

Lovely crisp quality bedding, I don't need lots of cushions but a couple of squashy feather pillows.

Dream house would have either a bay window or deep window seat with view over water or mountains

I love red brick houses especially when they’ve got an archway porch area without the doors . I don’t know why but they look so inviting to me . I hate pebble dash .

Love this! We used to visit elderly neighbours who had a hand grenade perched on the edge of a shelf - I was terrified 😂
I recently downsized from the family home to a small flat due to divorce but I have a bookcase with all my treasures on - it’s just Ikea Billy bookcase but it’s my museum.
The thing I really miss is my open fire. I have to buy smoke-scented diffusers and candles but it’ll never be the same. I recently emailed a diffuser company, to be told they’ve discontinued my favourite 😭

True Grace ‘Library’ scent is a smoky scent. A bit pricy but worth it, and they do free candles if you order on a Friday.

thejadefish · 18/11/2025 21:36

I always wanted a window seat, a balcony and a picture with a safe hidden behind it 😂 (not that I own anything valuable, but still). I also quite like bay windows (DH dislikes them & says why didn't they just make the room bigger, what's the point of them?!) if only to put the Christmas tree in & have it framed by the window. DH loves a long driveway. He said he doesn't know why he just does. DD would love a corner of cushions where she could sit and read, but sadly our house is too small to accommodate a reading corner, we need every inch for day to day things. One day maybe...

DD also wants a balcony!

SuperFi · 18/11/2025 21:48

A stable style outside door for the kitchen- saving up for one😀

BigBen12 · 18/11/2025 21:51

I love when there is nothing on my kitchen table. NOTHING. It's my DH's dumping gound for his things and my children follow suit. A clear stress free table would look lovely. Thanks

My kitchen faces east, and has French windows and sky lights. Early mornings this time of year I can sit and watch the dawn across the water meadows, while clutching my first cup of coffee.

Peaceful, warm & beautiful. Sets me up for the day. 😊

Gorgeous!!

blackheartsgirl · 18/11/2025 22:12

I like going to houses that have a bit of colour and the home dwellers personality all over it. Nothing that particularly matches either. Even more lovely when they have a book shelf that has not only books but interesting ornaments and candles etc.
cosy throws on a comfy sofa too.

someone professional came to visit me last week and she walked in my front room and said she really loved it, I live in a council house but my front room is dark blue and cream walls, my fire place has an electric fire but I’ve decorated the surround and mantlepiece with crocheted leaves and mushrooms, seasonal candles, lights, sofas have big throws, crocheted and fleece, pictures on the walls, big bookshelf also with unusual stuff and books that I’ve collected over the years and a big rug.

I love seeing similar in others too.

I’ve got a good view at the side and back of my house but I absolutely love my friends house, her view is spectacular and her garden is so quiet compared to where I live.

Delphiniumandlupins · 18/11/2025 22:12

I love high ceilings, proper-sized porch and a roomy hallway. Also working wooden shutters at windows. Double oven, pantry and separate utility room with a clothes pulley. I would also like a bathroom with the cistern high up above the toilet, flushed by pulling a chain. And a room for all the books.

I love big windows with wide sills, and a big deck (which apparently sounds like 'dick' in my accent, which leads to some misunderstandings. . .)

And lots of storage space. Oh, and a proper, big linen cupboard. And a proper pantry.

Are you from New Zealand? Michael McIntyre did a sketch about this (which may be what you're referring to...).

WaaWaaPedal · 18/11/2025 18:35

Lamps 😊 We have lots of lamps on smart plugs that automatically go on at sunset and off at bedtime (i.e. 10.30pm 😆).

Same!

Antiques. They seem to have gone out of fashion, but I love some of the old bits of furniture that I inherited or bought many years ago, they all have stories and hold memories for me.

Antiques are so last year.

CaptainCallisto · 19/11/2025 08:04

I really love those big, wrap-around, covered porches you see in the US/Australia. I'd love to be able to curl up outside with a book, but be sheltered from the sun/a bit of rain. If we ever build a house, it'll have one of those!

In my current house, I love my purple kitchen. The actual units are navy at floor level and white over the counters, but the walls are a heathery purple. Every room in the house is a different colour and I love it!

squashyhat · 19/11/2025 08:07

My woodburner, all my pictures which hold memories of visiting wonderful places and separate kitchen which means I can temporarily close the door on meal prep mess.

macshoto · 19/11/2025 08:37

Things I love about our current house:

  • Long winding driveway up from the road
  • Handmade kitchen that really fits the space
  • Underfloor heating
  • Log burning stoves in inglenooks
  • AGA (even if it is coal fired!)
  • My De Sede DS151 chaise longue

Things I would love to have:

  • High(er) ceilings (only the kitchen has one here)
  • Windows that keep out the cold (stone mullions with leaded lights and old glass look great but are not warm!)
  • Good lighting design (indeed, any, would be an improvement…)
  • A library (we’ve run out of space for books despite every landing being full of bookcases)
  • More walls with space for art (and a proper gallery rail system on those walls would be ideal!)
  • Architectural minimalism with lots of built-in storage
  • A big outside workshop (but hidden from view)
  • A greenhouse (in a walled garden would be a bonus)
  • Cable ducts to make running computer network cables easier

Are you from New Zealand by any chance? We had friends from NZ visit in the summer and we went camping. They kept asking if I had any ‘pigs’ and I was so confused until I worked out they were asking for ‘pegs’. I’m not actually sure what a deck is, is it a patio or a balcony? I really love the NZ accent, it’s so friendly.

Sorry to derail…

I like it when people have a sofa in their (big) kitchen and a plate rack and a snug/playroom/tv room with a separate living room which is just kept for best!

  • My De Sede DS151 chaise longue

I just googled that. 5k 😳 Jesus wept
