Early Learning Centre is part of The Entertainer toy shop.

Rosebys for their sheets. They did amazing flannel ones which were super toasty for the winter. I am reading the posts and reminded of Past Times which was fantastic. There was one in Kingston which was always good for presents

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 16/11/2025 21:18

Woolies - I've got numerous things I bought there still. Fabulous shop, from pick n mix to the record counter and kitchenware.

Anyone remember the Pierre Victoire restaurant franchise? Reasonably authentic French food. Like Cote but cheaper.

Debenhams. One stop shop for new outfits.

Woolworths! The closure of M&S in my home town led to its total demise. Very sad.

Woolworths! The closure of M&S in my home town led to its total demise. Very sad.

Likewise our city centre Markies shut now the area is populated by street drinkers and junkies camped out underneath the cash machines.

There was an independent shop in my hometown when I was growing up that was in 2 parts. A shop at the front with wool and haberdashery. You'd have to be patient in there while your mum got some buttons or a thimble. Then you would get taken (if you were good) to the shop of the same name behind it that was fabulous toy shop of wonder with shelves and tables packed with toys. Tall shelves where the shop assistants climbed a ladder to get precious toys down from. Long gone like my childhood.

But I think I miss the whole going to the shops experience. The activity of it, the crush and bustle or trying to get Christmas presents; browsing and trying things on.

Internet shopping is brilliant in so many ways. But I miss the social aspect. And things like having a cup of tea in a cafe afterwards.

I know you can still go to physical shops but it's not quite the same. And empty shop spaces are always a bit sad.

The original one is still in Soho.

Cargo
The Sweater Shop

Very niche, but there was an excellent music shop in my local big town when I was growing up. Used to love going in there and seeing all the different instruments (and not just guitars and keyboards). Their rival shop is still going but it was never as good.

Woolies is the obvious one , Kitchen Reject Shop ( which was the go to location when we were still at school for weekend shopping trips as they sold all kinds of shiny things , bracelets made of springy plastic too ) I feel like someone could make a fortune if the could bring back the nostalgic vibe of these .

Yes, the Kitchen Reject Shop!!! I bought all of my cookware from there when I was at university (you could buy a single teaspoon if you wanted Grin) and I think I still have a tin opener that came from there in 1998.

There seemed to be more reject shops generally in those days! Cambridge had the Monsoon sale shop, which was a brilliant place to get heavily-discounted posh dresses, and Galloway and Porter, which sold remaindered books cheaply (I still have several cookbooks from there).

IDontHateRainbows · 16/11/2025 21:43

Im still mourning the loss of Borders the book shop which was a victim of the 2008 recession.
And of course debenhams which was dear to my heart for many years.
And i lived in oasis c. 2008 back in the day when real leather handbags in high st clothes shops was a thing.
Its a travesty how they've sold the brand names to the shit online fake debenhams + fake oasis.

Jenners, especially around Christmas

Easier to deal with this tragedy now I don’t live in Edinburgh.

Oh I have not been to Edinburgh for years but we used to go around Christmas frequently as a child and I thought the big tree in Jenner’s was magical. I didn’t realise it was no more!

(though I have been there at Christmas once as an adult and realised my memory of a towering tree rising about four stories high was maybe a bit exaggerated!)

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 16/11/2025 22:04

Blimey where have I been? I haven’t heard of many of these shops, what did Wilko sell?

battenburgbaby · 16/11/2025 22:06

More recent but I really miss HEMA’s short-lived foray into the UK (Dutch chain that is roughly roughly two parts Flying Tiger, one part Paperchase, one part H&M)

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 16/11/2025 22:07

ha, just googled Wilko, it’s still going and sells everything!

Astrabees · 16/11/2025 22:08

Beatties department store in Wolverhampton.

spookymelon666 · 16/11/2025 22:10
