I need salt and pepper grinders which actually work

I’m fed up of grinders which stop grinding after a few months. Or where the bottom doesn’t stay on securely after re-filling. Or they block up easily, or are a bugger to re-fill in the first place. My latest purchase were an attractive pair of electric push button ones from Pro Cook (not cheap!) which I had high hopes for. One stopped working after 4 months.

can anyone recommend ones which actually work longer than a few months?

The green ones pictured here are identical to mine from Amazon. Still going strong after two years and the best thing are the lids- no more mess from the mills. Incidentally I have a wooden pepper mill- Cole and Mason I think which is at least sixty years old and works a treat but oh the mess.
I also have supermarket salt and pepper mills that I use in the kitchen and they work well.

The ikea glass spice grinders are the best I have found so far

Joseph Joseph 100% recommend 👌 Plus you don't get bits on the table or shelf as you use them upside down.

Agreed!

I have Peugeot ones too but I like these ones better. I only ever get the Peugeot ones out for occasions as they look nicer.

Me Le Creuset one are still going strong after nearly 10 years.

TheBitterBoy · 16/11/2025 09:03

I also have the Oxo good grips salt and pepper mills. After years of rubbish ones, these have lasted over 10 years.

Another recommendation for T&G crushgrind. I bought ours in 2020 after the Mason &Cole one lasted a disappointingly short time and they are still working as well as the day I bought them.

Ours are bottom grinders so I also treated myself to their ridiculously expensive little wooden tray to keep the mess down, but the bottom of a cheap butter dish is the right size and works just as well.

I have had these for over a year and still working well. Added bonus is that you can choose the colour to match your kitchen.

Second these.
Really easy to fill (unscrews at top) and they’ve got a base cover so no mess

I got le cruset ones for Christmas last year and they are still going strong. (Also match my pans!)

My le Creuset grinders look pretty but are shite!

The David Mellor ones i’ve just bought are a silver wedding present to replace T&G ones we got as a wedding present, so i reckon you’ve got 25 years!

applecrumblespider · 16/11/2025 12:52

I have Cole and Mason wooden ones going strong for about 20 years now

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 16/11/2025 13:01

I have three sets of salt and pepper grinders in the drawer that no longer work. One was a very expensive set that were a wedding present. It’s so frustrating that they last such a short period of time. I really need to just throw them out but can’t bring myself to.

OSTMusTisNT · 16/11/2025 18:08

OXO ones from Lakeland are great.

snurtifier · 16/11/2025 19:09

We just use a pestle and mortar. Nothing to break and you can grind the pepper as large or small as you want.

dysongirl · 17/11/2025 02:08

Bought a brilliant pepper grinder in my local lidl.
Along with matching kettle and toaster.
All still going strong 💪

Deboragh · 17/11/2025 11:01

I started using a pestle and mortar for my pepper, after wearing out yet another grinder, and then wondering how much grinded off plastic I've ingested over the years..

100% these

Fizzlepopper · 18/11/2025 09:50

Definitely look for a metal grinding mechanism - plastic will fail.

Ukisgaslit · 21/11/2025 14:08

I was on a similar salt and pepper grinder search years ago - fed up with rubbish ones .

I was in a hotel and the grinders they had were perfect . They were Peugeot and I’ve used them ever since

climbintheback · 21/11/2025 14:12

I’ve been through every conceivable type even resorted to expensive spice grinder mill thingies but all failed but I’ve got Sainsburys 6inch tall black ones and they are working a treat 12 months on!
