I need salt and pepper grinders which actually work

I’m fed up of grinders which stop grinding after a few months. Or where the bottom doesn’t stay on securely after re-filling. Or they block up easily, or are a bugger to re-fill in the first place. My latest purchase were an attractive pair of electric push button ones from Pro Cook (not cheap!) which I had high hopes for. One stopped working after 4 months.

can anyone recommend ones which actually work longer than a few months?

My Peugeot and Cole and Mason only lasted a couple of years each. Another vote for the supermarket ones - it’s ridiculous!

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 15/11/2025 09:42

Annoyingly, I can't get onto Amazon right now, but I have a pair of metal salt and pepper ceramic mills that have lasted me 15 years and are still going. I'll link when the site's back up.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 15/11/2025 09:42

I bought them after intensive research having become sick of binning a set of salt and pepper mills every year so I feel your pain

I’ve got Cole & Mason ones that were a house warming gift when I bought my first flat over 20yrs ago.

Still work. But dated now (Perspex & steel) but in daily use!

isitmytime · 15/11/2025 09:45

These ones from Amazon were under £10 and still going strong after 3 years. Best ones I’ve had.

My OXO good grips ones have lasted years

Mine too.
OP are you cleaning them (dry wipe or dry brush) every now and then so the closing mechanism/grinder doesn’t get clogged? I only do it when it gets a little stiff to twist/close which really isn’t often.

My Kuhn Rikon ones have been in daily use for about 20 years. They’re perfect!

That's good to know as we've just bought some , I'll get back to you in 20 years for the update !

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 15/11/2025 09:50

Right, mine's a T&G crush and grind, but an older design. They're still highly rated though.

RuledbytheWashingMachine · 15/11/2025 09:50

My Peugeot finders have been going strong for 5 years.

I have simple black ones that look great anywhere. And hardly any mess left behind.

fairislecable · 15/11/2025 09:50

My 20 year old pepper mill (M & S) broke and I replaced it with Joseph Joseph as I find their products robust. They lasted about 18 months!

I now have Oxo Good Grips they grind and adjust really well, refilling easy and no residue left on the work surface.

Hopefully they will continue.

The Peugeot ones are fantastic - last for years and the grind stays the same - you can also adjust how fine you want it. Totally worth it.

How do you adjust them? We have some old Peugeot ones I have up on

familyissues12345 · 15/11/2025 09:53

I love the look of my Le Creusant ones, but I sometimes find they block easily. So much prefer pre filled supermarket ones. I keep the pre filled in the kitchen, and the Le creusant ones on the dining table where they look pretty Grin

Shinyandnew1 · 15/11/2025 10:00

We have the OXO good grip ones-they are excellent.

KentishMama · 15/11/2025 10:01

Le Creuset.

After ten years the gears in one of them went, and they just sent me a new one.

There are little Roman numerals on the base of the grinder and you just click it round (on the one I have anyway!).

MeAndMyGhost · 15/11/2025 11:05

Ikea is what you need. We've had the fancy Le Creuset Ones as well as others and maybe we were unlucky but always go back to the IKEA ones.

I really rate OXO Good Grips products. My OXO salt and pepper grinders are years old and they're still going strong.

Scampuss · 15/11/2025 11:16

My OXO pepper mill has been going well for a few years, has lasted longer than previous ones by Cole & Mason, Joseph Joseph and others.

Salt mills are pointless though.

ETA: this pic shows a salt mill, apparently, which I do not and will never own, mine is the pepper mill!

Oxo because you can change the grind easily and they fill easily from the bottom. They also grind from the top and store upright so no grinds in the lids when you take them off. We have had a few because we had to buy some for the children when they went to uni. Oxo are well made.

I'm unreasonably proud of my comedy pepper grinder. Bought for me as a birthday present from a commercial cookery supplies shop 30 odd years ago. Used every day - still grinds perfectly.

Shown next to the cat for scale 🤣

What do you use for salt then? I don’t like the large crystals nor do I like fine salt. The nice thing about a grinder (when it works!) is it’s easier to sprinkle evenly. I’d happily dispense with a salt grinder if there’s a decent alternative though. Still need a pepper one though.

Just get the supermarket ones, the grinders loose sharpness after a year or so
