I need salt and pepper grinders which actually work

I’m fed up of grinders which stop grinding after a few months. Or where the bottom doesn’t stay on securely after re-filling. Or they block up easily, or are a bugger to re-fill in the first place. My latest purchase were an attractive pair of electric push button ones from Pro Cook (not cheap!) which I had high hopes for. One stopped working after 4 months.

can anyone recommend ones which actually work longer than a few months?

I buy the supermarket ones that come with salt and pepper inside (added bonus) my black pepper is generic Tesco and the salt is Malden

Blueeyedtiger · 15/11/2025 08:35

I got le cruset ones for Christmas last year and they are still going strong. (Also match my pans!)

I am the same. I love salt and pepper grinders but find they fail quickly too.

My best buys are also the Le Creuset ones.

That’s what I end up resorting to but I’m trying to avoid!

The best I've ever had are just the ones from B and M that come with the salt and pepper already in. Plastic but they've lasted me nearly ten years.

crossedlines · 15/11/2025 08:42

Are the Le Creuset ones easy to re-fill without peppercorns bouncing off the kitchen walls?

The Peugeot ones are fantastic - last for years and the grind stays the same - you can also adjust how fine you want it. Totally worth it.

Ineffable23 · 15/11/2025 08:44

I have some pretend Sainsburys le Creuset ones that seems great so far (but I have only had them a few months).

For avoiding peppercorns bouncing off the walls, I find making a funnel from scrap paper is quite effective.

Editing to add: stupid question possibly, but don't you normally take the top off to refill these things, rather than the bottom? I don't usually touch the mechanism end.

I'd second Peugeot. I have a couple of different ones (kitchen and dining table) and they are all fantastic. My kitchen ine allows me to change the grind level for pepper. My salt one, You can't use maldon salt though you need rock salt.

OrsolaRosso · 15/11/2025 08:46

I have had these for over a year and still working well. Added bonus is that you can choose the colour to match your kitchen.

I would also love to know the answer to this question. I’ve given up buying salt and pepper mills. No matter how much you pay they’re ultimately useless. The supermarket plastic ones are actually better.

MichelleCancelled · 15/11/2025 08:47

I have the biggest Le Crueset, really rate it. Plus it's bright orange so I can find it anywhere.

Oldieandgoldie · 15/11/2025 08:48

My Kuhn Rikon ones have been in daily use for about 20 years. They’re perfect!

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 15/11/2025 08:49

Oxo are good. Fill through the bottom, then turn them upside to grind. (You can adjust the grind )

Yes that is what I buy the last set was a discount shop maybe B&M, they last ages and never clog.

hidinginthebathroomagain · 15/11/2025 08:52

This really annoys me too. Got a crap electric one. Some nice glass Tesco ones and it’s the Lidl ones with S&P that actually work
I have started to wonder though if keeping them in a steamy kitchen buggers them up.

Tallestone · 15/11/2025 08:53

I get mine from Aldi they're really good

MayaPinion · 15/11/2025 08:54

We have had the Le Crueset ones for a year and they work really well well. They look great too.

rumred · 15/11/2025 08:54

I got Peugeot ones last year after years of shit grinders. They're great. I expect them to outlive me.

Cheeseontoastghost · 15/11/2025 08:57

I have those Pro cook ones Op
Absolutely rubbish
Following with interest

NWWordling · 15/11/2025 08:57

Another vote for the Peugeot. They have been making grinders since 1810 long before making cars so should know what they are doing. We got some last Xmas and have been great so far. We have a little funnel to assist with the filling process.

I have these too. One broke after 18 months so well outside the return window, so I contacted the company with the date of purchase and they sent me a replacement set PLUS a little gift! Fab service.

@crossedlines if your ProCook ones died after only four months, you could try contacting them as that’s not an acceptable lifespan.

Timeforabitofpeace · 15/11/2025 09:00

I think it’s worth buying a salt pig to sit next to the cooker at the same time. They all break if constantly used directly over steamy pans.

Treylime · 15/11/2025 09:01

Following. Ive bought the tesco pre filled ones but they stop working after a while

EastCoastDweller · 15/11/2025 09:02

@crossedlines glad to know it’s not just me. When my current one’s stop working I am thinking of just going cheap as I can and seeing them as disposable 🙄Saving the thread to study all the interesting suggestions. I think I got the current ones from Morrisons.
