I need salt and pepper grinders which actually work

I’m fed up of grinders which stop grinding after a few months. Or where the bottom doesn’t stay on securely after re-filling. Or they block up easily, or are a bugger to re-fill in the first place. My latest purchase were an attractive pair of electric push button ones from Pro Cook (not cheap!) which I had high hopes for. One stopped working after 4 months.

can anyone recommend ones which actually work longer than a few months?

I got le cruset ones for Christmas last year and they are still going strong. (Also match my pans!)

They'll keep going - I got mine about 10 years ago and they're still working great and look good as new

I had these £15 a pair salter ones about 6 years ago and have no issue with them:

They are very study, I've dropped them many times, never blocked, never fallen apart.

What do you use for salt then? I don’t like the large crystals nor do I like fine salt. The nice thing about a grinder (when it works!) is it’s easier to sprinkle evenly. I’d happily dispense with a salt grinder if there’s a decent alternative though. Still need a pepper one though.

I mostly only use salt for cooking pasta, rice and potatoes, so use a tub of salt flakes for that, and have a tub of fine sea salt if I have chips, eggs or whatever that need salt post cooking. Maldon or similar flakes are easy to crumble between fingers.

Oxo because you can change the grind easily and they fill easily from the bottom. They also grind from the top and store upright so no grinds in the lids when you take them off. We have had a few because we had to buy some for the children when they went to uni. Oxo are well made.

Blimey, I'm taken aback at how much these are, the price has nearly doubled since I bought them! Mind you that was YEARS ago, and they are still going strong.

ChewSlowlyJimmy · 15/11/2025 13:51

@NotbloodyGivingupYet I know, I bought mine a few years ago and we use them daily. They are in line with the cost of all the other ones mentioned on here though.

Ikea, they are quite big though

Another vote for Peugeot. Mine are still going strong some years down the line.

trainedopossum · 15/11/2025 14:35

OP I was where you are (I may have consulted MN at the time) and ended up buying Peugeot pepper grinders (one at my house and one at my mum’s, where I do a lot of cooking) which have never gone wrong in 7+ years of regular use.

I wouldn’t buy another salt grinder, I just use flaky sea salt as it’s easier and I have more control.

Itisme567 · 15/11/2025 14:46

Peugeot brand!

horseplay12 · 15/11/2025 15:44

I got some lovely manual ones from M&S - they are brilliant.

My husband had the same issue years ago and ended up getting a cast iron pepper grinder by Skeppshult. He used the site buy it once I think. Well.. it’s standing the test of time for sure - works excellently and still looks brand new. It did cost a bit though but he’d rather spend money and just buy something once! We also bought some wrought iron pans with a multi century warranty from the same site (made out of a single piece of metal).

I have Sainsbury's LeCrueset copies here. So far so good (and a good price).

angela1952 · 15/11/2025 18:35

I've had a few of the Cole and Mason ones over the years and they've always cracked. I've also tried almost every other brand named here!

Salt seems to destroy grinders very fast, so now I buy the Cornish Sea Salt fine flakes and just put out a tiny bowlful to crumble in fingers over food.

I use the clear acrylic IKEA ones with black lids for pepper now, and I have a really old grinder that I use when I'm cooking - its partner salt mill is long gone.

Cantsleepdontsleep · 15/11/2025 18:44

We have the ikea ones. They are pretty ugly but amazing. You can alter the size of the grind so we get lovely chunky pepper. Currently 2yrs old and no problems (salt is Himalayan rock salt, doubt that makes a difference). Plus so easy to replace if they do go wrong.

Starship74 · 15/11/2025 18:48

I have a Peugeot salt and pepper mill. Expensive but very good!

Place marking to read after dinner.

I'm sick of buying pre filled grinders that die when only 50% of the contents are used up. Last January I bought posh, electric Salter grinders from lakeland (arthritic hands) along with a steel funnel to fill them. Already the pepper one is getting stroppy and refusing to go occasionally.

suburburban · 15/11/2025 19:30

I have a Tupperware pepper grinder from more than 20 years ago

salt grinder if value one from Waitrose, is ok at moment

ShitaBrick · 15/11/2025 19:39

My parents have the best pepper grinder ever. No discernible make. It was given to them as an engagement present in 1971. Still going.

Worndownbyit · 15/11/2025 19:41

Joseph Joseph 100% recommend 👌 Plus you don't get bits on the table or shelf as you use them upside down.

Peugeot are great. I have a set, they were a wedding present, outlasted the marriage 😂. 14 years and going strong.

thenightsky · 15/11/2025 19:43

TBF I'd not bother with a salt one. Salt is salt and cheapest in the big bags from a supermarket.

Pepper corns seem to be bastards who jam up and destroy the grinders.

Gloriousgardener11 · 15/11/2025 19:45

As someone who has been through a raft of salt and pepper grinders over many decades I can now say that my Le Crueset ones are an absolute game changer. I’m getting through an awful lot of black pepper though!
