The BBC are screwed, aren't they?

Are we ever going to find out who actually made the monumental fuck up? Rather than just a homogenous apology from the top.

Is this person/people still working for them?

I actually understand why Trump is doing this. You can't just let something so wrong pass by or they'll just keep doing it.

A composite image shows a picture of Trump in a blue suit and yellow tie on the left, and a picture of BBC offices in London on the right

Trump says he will sue BBC for at least $1bn over Panorama edit

The US president confirmed he intends to sue the broadcaster for at least $1bn over the Panorama edit of a 2021 speech.

Nope.

ThreeRandomWordz · 15/11/2025 05:58

That's not the reason he's suing the BBC or other media organizations. 🙄

Marchitectmummy · 15/11/2025 06:04

The edit is disgusting, I'm no fan of Trump but it just shows that while we are all being trained on unconscious bias the BBC are consciously biasing what information we receive.

Personally I've always suspected the BBCs political bias was applied to all news items but it's a big mistake of theirs for proof to be found. More will go just less publicly.

TortillaKitty · 15/11/2025 06:06

His mind is like a rattlesnake and I doubt he has the attention span to see such a lawsuit through. He has little chance of success as he won’t be able to prove his reputation was damaged sufficiently by the BBC’s omission, particularly as the target audience of Panorama are not undecided voters in the US.

kinkytoes · 15/11/2025 06:07

Also, it feels like such an obvious breach of trust. Not hard to compare two speeches. I'm surprised it took so long to uncover it tbh.

They weren't only devious but they were stupid too. The worst type of idiot.

He will come after them until there is a change in culture and a transparent plan, new people in place to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

The BBC has an amazing opportunity here to reinvent itself as actually being the institution we all wish it already was. Where excellent journalists REPORT facts and opinions come from those who are clearly identified so we know their bias.

In a world where we can no longer believe anything we read on SM, the BBC really could be our beacon of truth.

FancyNewt · 15/11/2025 06:37

Is it possible that someone on Trumps side made this happen as a way of damaging the BBC's reputation? It's in his interests to do that given that the BBC is reportedly the second most trusted news site in America. He wants media who will share his message and not question him.

kinkytoes · 15/11/2025 06:42

I completely agree with you @mellongoose

I don't think so @FancyNewt as I think it would have come out earlier if so. The BBC have sadly given him the perfect excuse to attack it and potentially bring it down.

I hope it won't die, but it does need to change.

I'd love to know who is ahead of them as it cannot be any US outlet as none of them have any credibility as they are all extremely partisan to the left or right.

And no the BBC ain't screwed as the convicted criminal trump won't get a bean.

Apparently it’s the weather station or something 🤷‍♀️ also uk time limit to sue for defamation is a year i believe so that would be out the time limit unless he is trying to do the process and sue in a us state

Screwyousimon · 15/11/2025 07:24

Have you seen how many lawsuits Trump has at the moment going on against media companies or how many he has sued in the past? Seems like a side hustle of his. Yes the BBC did badly but I doubt he will get anywhere with his threats.

It did damage his reputation as it implied that he incited the Jan 6th riots in that speech.

This is a day where Trump’s Acton’s that day have been poured over by American political commentators and lawyers for half a decade and they never managed to prove that he directly caused the riot. If he had then he could have been charged with insurrection.

You don’t need to prove that you would or would not influence an election to win a lawsuit against the BBC, the programme also had 75% of the participants against Trump which shows bias and they issued an apology which admits guilt.
They will probably reach an out of court settlement and give money to a charity if his choice (our license fee money not their money of course).

Is Trump responsible for Savile? Hugh Edwards? spreading Hamas propaganda? lying that rapists are wome?
No, the BBC has made these choices thinking that they can and should manipulate us. They are disgusting and need to go as soon as possible.
The British public are taxed for this shit! Its outrageous!

Doggydogdogs · 15/11/2025 07:29

What exactly would he be suing them for?
damaging his reputation as an unstable, untruthful convicted criminal?
Like what damage has been done to him?
I suppose with resignations they’ve admitted guilt though

I love the idea that Trump would choose to give the money to charity 😂. A man widely known for his charitable endeavours 🙄

yummyscummymummy01 · 15/11/2025 07:33

Are they in the wrong on this one? Well yes unfortunately. Are they screwed? No. The BBC will always have enemies because of what it stands for and how trusted it is, Trump joins a long queue. it’ll survive this.

Nesbi · 15/11/2025 07:36

The programme was made for the BBC by an independent production company called October Films - the person who actually created the edit more than likely works for them, and the BBC didn’t spot it before the programme went out. If the BBC didn’t have to pay anything they would presumably pass the cost to October Films, who would have to claim on their insurance.

Trump actually winning a case is very unlikely though. He can’t claim in the UK as it is too late. Claiming in the US seems odd as the programme wasn’t shown there.

He would try to claim that people in the US saw it anyway, but he’d have to prove that with evidence. He’d also have to prove that it damaged his reputation, which is pretty challenging as his reputation is as a lying, cheating sexual molester who has been impeached twice, including for inciting the insurrection at the Capitol.

mamagogo1 · 15/11/2025 07:36

Past statute of limitations in the U.K. and to sue in Miami he needs to prove he suffered loss in Florida where it wasn’t shown. American courts allow for far more press freedom than U.K. courts too.

He hasn’t got much to stand on theconversation.com/trump-v-the-bbc-a-legal-expert-explains-how-the-case-could-play-out-269551

Radyward · 15/11/2025 07:40

The BBC have destroyed themselves.a news outlet to deliberately doctor a speech to make a presidential candidate look like they invited a a RIOT is some "error "
I mean just own it. There is no excuse that's even remotely believable. It was deliberate. Trump is dead right to sue the Fake news BBC.
How can anyone trust the 6 pm News now on anything. All credibility and impartiality or their pretence of same is now gaslighting.

Im all for him suing because the apology was no apology. Hiding behind errors were made BS.
They obviously think The Public and Trump can be fobbed off with that piss poor excuse
Just disgusting from The BBC

Doggydogdogs · 15/11/2025 07:43

less than 70% (and falling) of their income is license fee funded tbf and even so I doubt they’d be footing the whole bill given they only oversaw the making of the programme, they didn’t actually make it.

No, the BBC has made these choices thinking that they can and should manipulate us. They are disgusting and need to go as soon as possibl

Who is the bbc? Who made these choices? You’re not saying the thousands and thousands of people that work at the bbc (and also this other company that aren’t the bbc that actually made the programme) are disgusting people who all somehow conspired to secretly manipulate you?
I’ve never worked anywhere with such effective teamwork in my life.

obviously it’s a terrible edit and it breaks people’s trust in the bbc. But for me, we shouldnt throw the baby out with the bath water.

Nesbi · 15/11/2025 07:44

@Radyward - not so impartial yourself then?

EasternStandard · 15/11/2025 07:44

There’s some hubris here. The BBC are very bad at seeing their own bias.
