The BBC are screwed, aren't they?

Are we ever going to find out who actually made the monumental fuck up? Rather than just a homogenous apology from the top.

Is this person/people still working for them?

I actually understand why Trump is doing this. You can't just let something so wrong pass by or they'll just keep doing it.

A composite image shows a picture of Trump in a blue suit and yellow tie on the left, and a picture of BBC offices in London on the right

Trump says he will sue BBC for at least $1bn over Panorama edit

The US president confirmed he intends to sue the broadcaster for at least $1bn over the Panorama edit of a 2021 speech.

He will come after them until there is a change in culture and a transparent plan, new people in place to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

The BBC has an amazing opportunity here to reinvent itself as actually being the institution we all wish it already was. Where excellent journalists REPORT facts and opinions come from those who are clearly identified so we know their bias.

In a world where we can no longer believe anything we read on SM, the BBC really could be our beacon of truth.

Agreed. I really hoped this would be a chance for BBC to clear out the Activists pretending to be Journalists. Instead the last week has been endless whining about how everyone is picking on them - starting with Nick Robinson on R4 on Monday. They have learned nothing and are bringing about their own demise. I will find it hard to forgive them for giving their enemies such an easy target because we really do need unbiased, reliable news more than ever.

Bananaandmangosmoothie · 15/11/2025 08:10

Own goal for the BBC. They should have let Trump’s words speak for themselves. This isn’t an isolated incident, either: the Gaza story featuring the child of a Hamas terrorist was a heinous mistake and again, distracted from the actual story in Gaza. And I’m generally a fan of the BBC!

Timing with the Epstein files can’t be coincidence, though. Trump is doing what he can to silence the media from leaking the stories. I hope it all comes out soon.

It's very hard to see how he could successfully claim reputational damage. Yes, the splicing together of the two separate sections of the speech was bad, as it misrepresented what he said in that moment. However, Trump had already been indicted in the US for his part in the Jan 6 riots long before the programme was made, so it's hard to see how he would argue that the BBC had damaged his reputation in any meaningful way - that stuff was already priced in.

Plus there is the issue that he is out of time to sue in the UK, so he would have to do it in a US state, and it isn't clear that the programme was ever even shown in the US. Let alone that it had any influence or negative impact for Trump.

Finally, I understand he would be most likely to sue in Florida, and that this would mean that he would need to prove that the BBC had malicious intent.

I don't think he will succeed and I hope that the BBC holds its nerve and doesn't cave in. They were right to apologise and two senior leaders have resigned. There is no justification for them paying compensation in my view.

The programme was made for the BBC by an independent production company called October Films - the person who actually created the edit more than likely works for them, and the BBC didn’t spot it before the programme went out. If the BBC didn’t have to pay anything they would presumably pass the cost to October Films, who would have to claim on their insurance.

Trump actually winning a case is very unlikely though. He can’t claim in the UK as it is too late. Claiming in the US seems odd as the programme wasn’t shown there.

He would try to claim that people in the US saw it anyway, but he’d have to prove that with evidence. He’d also have to prove that it damaged his reputation, which is pretty challenging as his reputation is as a lying, cheating sexual molester who has been impeached twice, including for inciting the insurrection at the Capitol.

Yes but now we know that a very similar edit was done 2 years ago for another program by the BBC itself, so it is systemic. They had that report 6 months ago and tried to ignore it.

Clive Myrie said on the news just last night that the BBC had "mistakenly given the impression that he incited violence", so even now they are all putting their heads in the sand about what they did. It wasn't mistaken, it could only have been done by deliberate intent.

They "knew" in their heads what Trump had done so they edited it to show the British public what they "knew" he had done. They still believe he did it.

I have read the transcript of the whole speech to check whether they are right. He didn't incite violence anywhere in it and in the middle, between the two clips, he called for a peaceful demonstration.

The BBC under Birt decided to stop reporting the news and start interpreting the news for us thicko viewers who don't understand what we're looking at. It was a wrong turn, but in the meantime they have overwhelming recruited left wing employees who are all now working in an echo chamber reassuring each other that they've got the interpretation right.

It's an unholy mess that we should not have to pay a licence fee for.

I completely agree with you @mellongoose

I don't think so @FancyNewt as I think it would have come out earlier if so. The BBC have sadly given him the perfect excuse to attack it and potentially bring it down.

I hope it won't die, but it does need to change.

Change to what, GB News?

Someone name an outlet that has more credibility.

I'll be waiting.

LilySad91 · 15/11/2025 08:16

I'm totally sick of the BBC lying all the time.

Yesterday an immigrant dubbed the UK's worst serial rapist was jailed.

The BBC knew this was about to happen so the day before prominently published a story about a (non immigrant) rapist who was jailed 22 years ago and died 15 years ago, saying he was the UK's worst serial rapist.

The propaganda / messaging is so obvious

GB News is almost unwatchable because it tries too hard to be balanced.

It comes from a right wing perspective but always tries to balance any opinion with a left wing voice, which is very easy to find, but it's usually tedious or clickbait.

The BBC comes from a left wing perspective but doesn't always bother to balance this with a right wing opinion, and when it does has no idea who to turn to, so it is often ie a left wing Tory who doesn't disagree with the narrative

He is a convicted criminal.

Lies are part of his DNA.

"Grab em by the pussy"

Anyone giving an ounce of credibility to this criminal has an ulterior motive.

Still waiting on any outlet that has more credibility.

Radyward · 15/11/2025 08:20

Dead right @imdunfer
Its the delusion of the BBC that's jaw dropping
So is Trump supposed to say oh that will do in response to their "apology' He was left no option but to pursue legally.
News should be impartial and report facts end of.
The stupid public needs guiding and moulding to our bettet way of thinking.

Freysimo · 15/11/2025 08:20

I hope he sues the BBC to oblivion. I think many people still trusted the BBC but I honestly don't see how it comes back from this. Another headache for Starmer.

Hopefully our government will step in. We can't let the tiny orange tyrant bring down the bbc just due to an editing mistake. He just wants anyone in media who questions his outrageous behaviour destroyed. Hmm I wonder who else was like that.........🤔

olympicsrock · 15/11/2025 08:21

I’m really glad this challenge is happening . In 2010 the BBC and Fiona Bruce did this to a colleague of mine in a panorama programme. They edited the interview with my colleague changing the answers to questions around to make him seem bumbling incompetent and evasive in his answers.
I saw the real interview and the one aired. it was a hatchet job and was very damaging to a really good person .

It’s about time that someone challenged them around this sort of editing .

kinkytoes · 15/11/2025 08:21

Sorry yes @kodakpp3 I meant two versions of the same speech. I was half asleep before!

Thanks to those explaining the legal ins and outs.

Also, yes - why hasn't the BBC apologised to us, the viewers, the funders, the 'believers'? They seem to have forgotten who they are there for.

They lied about him but they lied to us. He's not the only one who deserves an apology.

I hope so. The whole outfit is rotten from the top down. I fail to understand why people are forced under threat of prosecution to pay for something they dont use and dont want.
The most annoying aspect is the rest of the world can watch it for free and us mugs have to pay.
Defund it now imho

BeardofHagrid · 15/11/2025 08:22

Just look at what the BBC did to Cliff Richard. Helicopter lights shining into his house as it was raided. All over some completely fake allegations. He almost killed himself.

But when Huw Edwards was convicted they hush it all up AND give him a golden goodbye.

It’s a very sick organisation. I hope it gets to sued to oblivion.

ChessorBuckaroo · 15/11/2025 08:23

OP... change to what?

Name one outlet, just one, with more credibility.

"gb news tries to be balanced". For absolute fuck sake. Hahaha

MikeRafone · 15/11/2025 08:24

The bbc have sat on this, showing they don’t give a shit about journalism or truthfulness

but it’s too late for Donald to sue

byt it’s a distraction from those blessed files

Do you work at the BBC or something, why can't you play the ball? Justify why this particular act, splicing together two parts of a speech to intentionally change the meaning and deceive the public, was okay in your eyes.

kinkytoes · 15/11/2025 08:26

@ChessorBuckaroo so because other outlets may be unbalanced it's ok for the BBC to be too?

No! That's not OK. We should expect far far better.

Not one suggestion yet for a more credible news outlet.

Nesbi · 15/11/2025 08:28

I agree with the comment above that the BBC let themselves down. As for the more “frothing mouthed” comments - that’s just noise from people who are themselves clearly biased and are just pushing their own agenda.

For the few who actually seem to ally themselves with Trump, I just have no words. One of the most truly despicable men on the planet - I think the Epstein files have much more to reveal (as if there isn’t enough of him in there already).

It really highlights the asymmetrical nature of the battle the BBC has to fight. Trump has spewed thousands of lies with no repercussions, if a lie is pointed out to him he just doubles down, reality is what he chooses to make it.

Fox News in the US represents itself as news, but will happily repeat his lies or fail to call him out on them - again with no repercussions.

Against that backdrop of constant misinformation, the bar the BBC is expected to clear every day in every programme and article it puts out is so much higher it is totally out of sight. Any failure on their part to clear that bar leaves people calling for their complete destruction. That is the fight they have every single day, and in this case where they got it wrong it led to the resignations of the 2 most senior people in the organisation.

If only others (particularly politicians) could be held to those same standards.

Made what happen, the actual editing? Why say that

To discredit the BBC, a world wide respected media outlet. It's in his interests to control the narrative about him, particularly if he's worried about the Epstein files.
