A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

Bracing for the budget 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

It's interesting- I had coffee yesterday with a friend [waves- she might actually be on this thread too as I know she is a MNetter.. Hi if so!] and we both were talking quite openly about Labour and how crap they are.

I never talk politics with people, particularly in the past where the only people who were open about their leanings tended to be smugly pro-Labour and flaunted their credentials as being a 'better person than you'. Yet I find everywhere I go people are now openly talking about the harms Labour are doing. Even among traditionally supportive cohorts of society such as teachers and those who enjoy union-protected workplaces.

The fact people are now openly voicing their dissent- it's a zeitgeist.

(My grammar is rubbish this morning - I need a second coffee).

NoWordForFluffy · 11/11/2025 07:31

I'm on the train, going to my non-job as a non-worker. The weather is fucking shitty too.

The problem is that we've no mechanism for getting this godawful bunch out. And I can't see the power-hungry idiots throwing the towel in like Sunak did! 😩

CruCru · 11/11/2025 07:42

No - they’ll hang on until the last possible moment.

What do you think the King thinks of Starmer?

The benefit cap change in this climate will send more over the edge. It might not look like poll tax riots but it could be more opting out, leaving and general antagonism towards Labour.

It's a bit annoying having to check the name first to decide whether to bother reading. Normally we can just read through the thread.

Do we think they're name changers from the other thread, or just randoms? Wondering whether it's worth mentioning the increase in incursions over there: they've stepped in to ask people to respect the agreement to leave each other alone before.

Abit of both I think. I've decided the best thing is to pretend they don't exist. Just responding to them gives them food to continue in their efforts to derail our threads. Don't give them head room.

It's not like we're coming up on the Active threads, and the thread title is clear, so posters need to make an actual point of posting here. I do think we might be getting some name changers.

Shall I start a Reform thread for you so you post there to your heart's desire?

You are clearly obsessed with Reform, but you seem bashful enough not to want to start one on your own? Just being helpful here.

Honestly, don't engage.

Currently driving through France (well, not literally as I type 😂) and have been really struck by the pride in French produce etc. Many restaurants have explicit posters/notes on the menu etc explictly stating e.g. 95% meat is from the immediate region and 5% from elsewhere in France. Even large supermarkets have much less eg Kenyan brands/imports of out/of/season fruit and veg than in any Tesco in the UK. Can’t see that pride in English farming products (such as still remains) ever being promoted by this government.

Oh I love that about France. That even the big chain supermarkets always have a regional produce section.
Last year we were there during cherry season and stopped in a village where the market was on, and many of the women were wearing cherry print dresses. It was lovely.

strawberrybubblegum · 11/11/2025 08:00

Reeves NI change:

NMW for adults over 21 went up: from £11.44 to £12.21
NI Increased from: from 13.8% to 15%
NI Threshold change: from £9100 to £5000

Full time average teacher salary pre-Reeves: £40k
Employer NI: £4264
Employer total cost: £44264
Employee gets: £32320
HMRC gets: £11944

Full time NMW pre-Reeves: £21,049
Employer NI: £1649
Employer total cost: £22698
Employee gets: £18674
HMRC gets: £4024

With the NI and NMW change:

Full time average teacher salary post-Reeves: £40k
Employer NI: £5250
85% of NI change refunded: £838 refund
Employer total cost: £44425
Employee gets: £32320
HMRC gets: £12105

Full time NMW post-Reeves: £22,466
Employer NI: £2620
85% of NI change refunded: £825 refund
Employer total cost: £24261
Employee gets: £19,695
HMRC gets: £4566

Now assuming 50% of school staff are teachers (from google) and counting the rest as NMW for simplicity, that increases staffing costs for the school by 2.5%

Ie their total budget (70-80% on salaries) is cut by about 1.8%.

Doesn't sound that much?

Multiply it up by the £64 billion allocated to schools out of the education budget, and you can see that the government have clawed back £1.15 billion from the budget they give schools.

... About the same amount as the failure of the education VAT is going to cost. Coincidence?

We did say that the VAT policy would harm state kids as well as private.. Well here we go.

OMG French Cherries!
Yes, the French are incredibly proud of their country and history, it's sad that we as Brits are supposed to be ashamed of ours.

And all without any industrial re-structuring or wider change. Just casualties of this government’s economic stupidity.

I wouldn’t want to be a minister with responsibility for the employment bill. They might have temporarily got away with greater employment burdens in boom times, but now it looks like bringing on meltdown for the jobs market.

Yes, totally self inflicted.

I wonder what the figures are when you look at the revenue generated from additional employers insurance and the growing welfare bill that result from that act of self sabotage. And that is before you consider the damage done to people and families up and down the country and the demoralising effect it has on the nation.

I’m just catching up. And I was thinking Exactly the same thing. It’s ruining my 2nd coffee. Anyway good morning everyone, another day another dollar spaffed up the wall by Labour ☕️ x

Morning all.

Did we get the Opinium polling from a couple of days ago? I may have missed it so I apologise in advance if this has already been done;

Reform 33(+3)
Labour 20(-)
Conservative 17 (-1)
Lib Dems 12 (-1)
Greens 11 (-1)

I just thought it seemed significant because it isn't showing this continuing uplift for the Greens that we've seen in the others. And actually shows a drop - although at -1 it isn't very significant -but it isn't up.

Edited

I read that as ‘opium’ poll. And thought omg where are we now, what is going on??!
😆🙈

Ben Wallace in the Telegraph today. On the importance of putting defence first.

Today we must also remember that it is appeasement, not strong defence, that leads to war

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/571ceb28c0d63109

He’s a very sensible man. I can’t understand how anyone over the age of teenager, doesn’t get the importance of defence spending.

And more jobs lost = more people on ‘benefits’ so more potential Labour votes bought…and more children growing up thinking that a benefits lifestyle is normal.

Exactly. Pretty sure that’s their aim. State control and all that.

EasternStandard · 11/11/2025 09:18

Support plummets again with the budget if its benefit increase and tax rises. People angrier. Labour lose more votes.

Local elections tank for them. Wondering where the out could be for us with this dire gov.

😂 Every time I see "Opinium", I hear the Sisters of Mercy "Dominion" 🎤
"Some say prayers, some say prayeeeerrs
And I say mine"

(just in case anyone wanted an 80s earworm)

I was awake for a good chunk of the night, annoying. I looked at this thread but...nah.

@upseedaisee i've never been to Chatsworth house - I hope you have fun.

The person who said about Donald Trump and someone assuming you're a Trump supporter because of what you were saying about the BBC, yes, I find this kind of thinking very prevalent at the moment. It's really lazy and also a tactic in itself, telling people that their views are defined by a really broad set of characteristics and almost trying to force people to take sides.

The TDS is strong on both sides of the pond, but there's also that way of thinking, I don't know if there's an academic term to describe it.

EmeraldRoulette · 11/11/2025 09:24

Actually there kind of is an opium poll on this occasion

People who want taxpayer funded opium are going to vote Green.

38thparallel · 11/11/2025 09:26

Perhaps she’ll really go for it and start blaming Harold Macmillan or Ted Heath. Or of course Margaret Thatcher.

Or maybe even further back - Pitt the Younger maybe? Actually, I’m sure there are problems today which can be laid at the door of Ethelred the Unready.
