Had a relative to stay for a few days, she just wanted to eat all time which we did not expect. I had cooked and baked which she ate (way more than us) then she said she wanted to get up in the night as she was so hungry!

OP posts:

okay, was just giving bare bones here
Breakfast - porridge/granola, greek yog, fruit/ eggs
11am - scone/biscuits with coffee
Lunch - veg/pulse soup. bread, cheese, salami
3pm - scone/biscuits tea
Dinner - Spag bol/curry etc
Sweet treat, coffee
Supper - toast
I did feel it was rude to say they felt starved!

Assuming you were giving 'normal' size portions...

This surely would be plenty for most people??

It would be for me... I would consider myself someone who eats more than average too!

Sounds a rude guest !

I think I’m particularly greedy - compared to some of my family members anyway, and I would feel bad eating my way through their cupboards even if they were happy for me to do so.

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea

you must spend loads of money on your food shop! Do you never just think oh id rather spend some of that money on other things?

Owly11 · 07/11/2025 19:54

Has she got dementia? I read another thread recently about an older woman who was so starving at a party that she grabbed the cake before it had been served and a lot of people said that this can be a sign of dementia.

Good heavens - You are really finding something that’s not there from two random posts I’ve made tonight! I’m a bit gobsmacked actually. The things some people dream up about others 🤣 Bizarre.

MeridaBrave · 07/11/2025 20:17

Haha, we tell house guests in advance we won’t be cooking for them in the week.

The guest room has a tiny kitchenette with a fridge, I stock it before they come. eg cheese, fruit, yoghurt, milk, cereal. They always eat out or get a take away. DH and I work too hard to worry about catering for guests.

I think she is rude. She could have bought extra snacks or helped herself from the fridge.

SliceofTosst · 07/11/2025 20:58

That's a lot of food.

Soup's not a meal. You need some carbs.

Soup is a drink! Even when belatedly some lentils appear in it

You can't have eaten a decent soup then. Not all soups are thin enough to drink. I make a lovely minestrone thick with vegetables and pasta. You definitely need a spoon to eat it.

3luckystars · 07/11/2025 12:08

She is looking for a chef, when she comes again say ‘help yourself to whatever you want, I can’t cook anymore than 3 meals a day, the rest is up to you and it’s not a 24hr cruise ship buffet ’

OP hasn't been cooking more than three meals a day...

good! Probably cos she has a life and it would be totally unnecessary

Zov · 07/11/2025 21:58

Wow, so people have different eating habits, and some people eat more than others. Hold the front page!!!

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 07/11/2025 21:59

SheinIsShite · 07/11/2025 12:47

porridge and scone are whatever you want them to be, and a snack if what you want too, or a full meal!

What size of scone are you thinking about that it can be a full meal?

"What size of scone are you thinking about that it can be a full meal?"

oh, you know - like the mythical Mumsnet chicken that will feed a large family for many days, before then chicken sandwiches being made for work and school lunchboxes, chicken soup, chicken stick and a bit leftover for the freezer

Of course one scone is a meal... For all us teeny tinies anyway. 😆😋

Easily 2000 calories in that list

Porridge with milk and eg honey, maybe something else from that list - 350 (conservative)
Scone with jam (because who would have a dry scone) - 260
Soup with bread cheese and salami - maybe 80 for the soup and 400 for the bread cheese and salami
Two biscuits - 150
Spag Bol - 750
”sweet treat” eg a small pot of yoghurt, choc mousse, etc - anywhere from 100-300 calories
Toast - 100-200 calories if butter etc.

Around 2200 with conservative estimates. That’s not counting coffees, any drinks other than water etc.

To understand where she’s coming from you’d need to know what she normally has available that she’s missing. All seems totally fine to me and I always end up over catering.

Or - maybe 2/3rd of that depending on portion size

I don't really know what you mean by so Mumsnet 🤣 it's just that your idea of a full bowl of soup might not be the same as your cousin's idea? (Same as how I make a batch that I think is 8 bowls of soup and my husband seems to turn it into 3!) I'm clearly not expecting you to weigh anything 🤣 I'm just making the point that it's really impossible to tell whether it would be enough for an average person just on the basis of what the food is - you would also have to know how much of it there was.

Exactly

Hotpolishcloth · 07/11/2025 22:18

I think I would have just ordered a takeaway with that menu. It's bare bones alright and nothing even remotely appetising. Least she could do would be offer to buy takeaway if she is staying for free and felt hungry or didn't like what was offered.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 07/11/2025 22:20

stringsoup · 07/11/2025 13:59

I'm sorry, but it feels like such a waste of time discussing a problem with you. I have no wish to split hairs with someone so pedantic.

It's really not splitting hairs.

Portion size is basic and fundamental.

Take pasta. A modest amount of pasta with a basic tomato sauce will weigh in at least than 300 calories. However, Prezzo Pasta Spaghetti Carbonara Al Forno weighs in at 1,405 calories. Now call it splitting hairs, but I have a vague hunch that one is a larger portion size (and more filling) than the other. And to claims otherwise is disingenuous

really?? What does an average day of eating look like for you, out of interest?

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 07/11/2025 22:28

RampantIvy · 07/11/2025 18:43

The guest could help herself. She sounds like she has an eating disorder.

🤣

Peak Mumsnet - along with the dementia, diabetes and thyroid (??) diagnoses

still at least 300 calories there. Just cos somethings small and not very filling doesn’t mean it’s isn’t calorific

Really?!
I feel like I eat a lot and that would have been plenty for me (I’m guessing average portion sizes and not a thimble of granola etc)
how is 3 meals and snacks bare bones?

She has provided plenty of food.
