Yes, I'm bored.
Waiting in the car for DCs to come out of school so decided to clear out my bag and found my coin purse.
I have exactly £12.75 in cash to my name.

OP posts:

About £100 in my purse. About £150 emergency cash (it started out as the emergency tenner from my student days...) About £4 in my swimming bag in pound coins for the locker. About £8 in the car in coins for car parks, which has been the same for ages, because I can't remember when I was last in a carpark that didn't take cards or use an app.
Plus an assortment of Euros, US dollars, AU dollars and a couple of other currencies, but only a few quid of each. And a few pre-decimal coins.

Mscheese · 04/11/2025 22:48

Probably about £6 in change.

FusionChefGeoff · 04/11/2025 22:48

We’re doing pretty well for hard cash at the moment as DC keep handing over notes from birthdays / grandparents etc and adding to their cards! I reckon about £100 which is loads considering we buy everything with contactless!

hopsalong · 04/11/2025 22:51

five £50 notes which my grandma gave me just before she died and which, for sentimental reasons, I’ve never taken to the bank now that they’re no longer currency (probably too late)
46p in the folds of my bag (just looked)
60 euros and some small change in a pot upstairs

MCNAMARA · 04/11/2025 22:52

Around £100. My son got it for his birthday but I transferred money into his bank account and I took the cash. Usually I have a tenner in my car.

I’ve never had to beg to withdraw any of my money, and I haven’t carried cash for years.

If you never carry cash how would you know if you had to beg or not lol. Im not talking about a few hundred, I’m talking about a few thousand. That’s when they start asking questions.

DeftWasp · 04/11/2025 22:54

About £70K or thereabouts

In cash?

DeftWasp · 04/11/2025 22:55

No my bad, if we are doing actual folding £5.75

NotTheSameTwentyFourHours · 04/11/2025 22:58

Several places around here only take cash, so I have about 80€ (had more earlier but got the whole family takeaway noodles as was late home - they only take cash).

It's so weird atm because some places only take cash, and some only card, so you can't easily do without either.

Banks should change it for you esp as £250

ThatRareLimeFinch · 04/11/2025 23:04

a lot more than i probably should have in the house. we like to keep a few 1000s in our safe as a super super emergency fund. so about 6k, most of that is DPs though

momager1 · 04/11/2025 23:40

in my purse, about the equivalent of 200 us dollars (food shop tomorrow and do not trust the banking cards or apps in this country, dominican republic) about 2000 usd in the safe in our bedroom. I am really tight though and if any of that goes, I need to know why and where lol.. My husband will spend some on friday night out with his best friend.. I am having a lunch on the beach tomorrow with my friend and will spend some. I am already thinking of the shrimp tacos and a margarita!!

WhatFlavourIsIt · 04/11/2025 23:48

I have an envelope in the kitchen with £5k. Sadly it's not for me to spend it's a payment from a customer of my DH. In my purse I have £15.40

Well I’ve had to withdraw cash to pay for large purchases occasionally, and never had to beg for it 🤷🏻‍♀️. Although granted, I’d far rather pay for £££ things on my card due to the additional buyer protection that you don’t get with cash.

Nsky62 · 05/11/2025 08:00

About £25 cash, took out extra for my neighbours card fair, spent less than expected

I have never had to beg for my money even when taking thousands out 😂how weird

2GreatFatSquirrels · 05/11/2025 08:51

£1. It’s my trolley/locker pound. Other than that I don’t carry a wallet.

I know, it’s such hyperbole isn’t it?

PiccadillyPurple · 05/11/2025 09:02

£170 in notes, £12 in £1 and £2 coins and a load of random silver.

It’s not though is it, you see it happening all the time. My neighbour tried to get £5000 out for work being done on her garden. Bank asked questions and she had to wait 5 days to get it out. I simply skip all this keeping it at home. Plus with all the banks closing my nearest branch is 25 miles away. Can’t be bothered with that

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 05/11/2025 09:09

Im currently in the bath naked, so nothing in pockets but some £40, $2 and about €40 in various bags

But why would you be paying that in cash? I've never had to beg to transfer that sort of money to a supplier/tradesman for work. I don't pay in cash.

Why didn't she just do a bank transfer? Why are we still paying tradespeople in cash?

Because some people would rather pay in cash what’s so wrong about that. Why would you want to pay everything through bank/card/ contactless? Are people so lazy now that they choose convenience over counting some money out. What happens when the banks go down and you can’t use your card. How do you pay for things? I couldn’t be bothered with all that for the sake of convenience.
