A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

There's more talk of doing away with tax breaks on salary sacrifice and NI breaks for companies matching your pension contribution. What do they think will happen? Oh yeah, workers will stop paying into company pensions and companies will stop making extra contributions. DS firm matches it to 10% that's pretty generous for the private sector. At the moment, he's paying in 15% of his salary and getting the full 10% from his company, it's a lot going into his pension pot and it means his tax burden is actually reduced.

Rachel Reeves slammed 'reckless' as she plots NEW £4billion tax raid on pension perks

I will be fucking fuming if they do this. So many private sector employers (mine included) pay the minimum 3% into their employees' pensions. Even on a good salary, it's a lot of effort to get a decent amount saved into it.

To take this tax break away would be a proper 'screw you' to all of us saving using SS schemes.

It’s always the same. They’re doing exactly what we should have expected. Modifying language to suit their purposes. Like the gender woo arseholes.

‘But what was far more insidious, he argued, is that through their own particular uses of existing words, over and over again in their propaganda, speeches, and publications, they changed the meanings and contexts of these taken-for-granted words of the German language.’

Excellent article on language manipulation of the masses, here:

So by Labour's definitions, I'm neither working nor a woman, when I'm pretty bloody sure I'm both! 🤯 😡

Trouble is, the government and the "bleed the broad shoulders" crowd just see a magic pot of money sitting there, that they've decided they are entitled to help themselves to. Doesn't matter if it's a pot of money painstakingly saved up in good faith by people-formerly-known-as-workers, who have planned their old ages with said pot in mind. And definitely doesn't matter if raiding said pot actually ends up costing society more in the long run, plus breaking the social contract, plus causing behavioural changes that kill the golden goose.

There's a pot of money! Broad shoulders! Fairness!

DH and I have just had a conversation about him working much less if they go after pension tax relief. When he works, he's away. We don't see each other for months at a time - why would we live like this to hand most of the money over to Labour to spend on their pets?

Rivalled · 01/11/2025 11:41

the average dc pension for someone in their mid 40s is terrible - approximately 80/90k for people 45-54. That is not going to get you much of a pension.

Are these the kind of luxury fat cats Labour are after? Let’s tax people so they can become the poor pensioners of the future?

Rivalled · 01/11/2025 11:44

I don’t think they’ll go after pension relief - looking at the above numbers, they would simply be creating a big future issue for themselves if they discouraged dc savings which are already on average, not good enough.

SpaceRaccoon · 01/11/2025 12:05

They'll be long out of power when those chickens come home to roost though.
That being said, I do sincerely hope you're right!

Does "thinking through future consequences and making policy for the good of the country and all its citizens" chime with what you've seen Labour do so far?

I have been thinking about this.

Labour lied to enter power, they have consistently lied during government, and one must therefore conclude that they will do anything to retain power. To say that the future of democracy is at risk in the UK, would be an understatement.

To all of those who voted Labour in, and are unwilling to accept that they made a terrible mistake - what have you done?

Some admit it, many don't admit it but the bi-elections tell you that they no longer support Labour. A tiny % are doggedly on MN spouting the same rhetoric as they did during the election. They will never admit the fuck up that Labour have caused/continue

They (the MN Labour cult) remind me very much of Donald Trump. Spouting so much untrue self righteous turgid crap, so continuously, they believe their own shit.

The similarities between the far left and far right are far more striking than their differences.

I think a lot of current Labour supporters are going to get a shock that they aren't "working people" and therefore have the broadest shoulders to be taxed to high heaven.

100% agree. Plus the nastiness towards anyone who criticises their ideology.
I do frequently refer to them as cultists because that's how they come across.

Sky News has revealed a leaked internal Treasury definition of 'working people' as all those earning below £46k and suggested that Labour's scheme could be to reduce the threshold for the higher rate of income tax from £50k to £46k & claim that they haven't increased income tax rates.

Which is hilarious as I'm a working person by their definition yet send my child to an independent school so at the same time have the broadest shoulders???

Edited

So a "working person" earns below £46k and those above are not "working people".

Also, someone below £46k who is on benefits and is not working is in fact a "working person' but the one above £46k who pays for these benefits isn't a 'working person'.

Does this make any sense?

Darren Jones is the one to watch. In a bad way. He’s been installed by Starmer as his right hand man. In a new made up role.

Oh god, that's scary.

My DH works part time. He is a working person. I work (more than) full time, and I'm not a working person.

How the actual fuck are they going to persuade the electorate of their definition of 'working person'? Surely nobody is stupid enough to think it makes any logical sense?

But. Labour know they are a one term wonder so are not looking beyond 2029. They will take money from wherever they see fit and simply pass this mess and all the others they have created, on to whoever the poor buggers are who follow them into government. The long term forecast is of no consequence when they look to the short term of their own tenure.

Yes I agree long term won’t be a factor, they’re doing so badly they’ll likely be out at next GE.

I really don’t think anyone should take being told they’re not a working person if earning over £45k. It’s so ridiculous I feel militant again!
