A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

What gets me is that there are so many ideas floating around now that it is clear the government are looking to unsettled the public on so many fronts that it will be a relief when it does not come to pass in its entirety.

And it makes me rage with the contempt that they have for the public. That they would toy with us like this is just awful. It feels like covid grade manipulation all over again - using fear and anxiety to achieve an aim.

And the effect on the economy, with people not knowing where the axe will fall is a real world consequence of this bollocks.

Is this what passes for comms now? Dicks.

Upstartled · 01/11/2025 08:04

And it's not just the general public they hold in contempt:

"At a recent event hosted in Downing Street, officials told economists at one prominent think tank that they could only attend the evening reception if they agreed to hand out canapés and clear up" 😱 Doesn't this just sum them up? Economists - you know the real ones, not the handbag fleecing ones, should be the experts at the table.

And, also, they are clearly unwilling to listen to the input of businesses who are still scrambling from the hammer blows inflicted by Reeves last year. To the point that those businesses have given up on the government completely and are looking for other avenues to make an appeal for common sense.

Thank you @DancingFerret and @upseedaisee , yes I checked previously and never been entitled. I have an over active thyroid. Well mine is called Graves Disease. It could have been any other auto immune disorder but this one doesn't entitle me to free prescriptions.

The other option is to talk to your GP about having a larger prescription so that you have fewer to pay for over the year.

You've nailed something I've been feeling for a while now. The government blatantly use fear and lies to control us.

I've previously wondered how Russians can believe their state television and accept their government's twisted version of reality... and now it seems to me that the UK is no different.

I don't believe a word the government say. There have been so many blatant, deliberate lies, pushing an agenda. The BBC is their mouthpiece, obviously biased, clearly moulding the public narrative according to the government's line..

There is some difference to Russia: we don't end up in jail for different opinions (apart from some people with banned tweets) and there are still other news sources.

But the contempt for the public and manipulation are appalling. I don't know whether it's got much worse in the last 5 years, or whether I just didn't notice before because I was being a good little citizen anyway, doing exactly what the government wanted.

I don't know if covid opened up my eyes to this nudge on steroids, or if they have taken the baton and gone with it so that it is unavoidable to ignore it now?

It's human to scan the horizon for trouble, I'm as prone to that as anyone, but using that instinct as a tool to wrangle a population into political compliance is absolutely crushing for those who don't have the footholds of day to day stability and good mental health.

This party-before-country psych ops is morally corrupt.

upseedaisee · 01/11/2025 08:20

@strawberrybubblegum Think the difference between now and previously is that although there has no doubt been a certain contempt for the electorate, Labour have taken it to a whole other level and have no desire to cloak it. So we see it for what it is.

Yes they got a majority by using small sections of the public as bait. The ridiculous VAT policy got people going on spite etc

Now they’ve messed everything up and have expanded that to so many groups. They don’t know how to govern without the attack on people.

Yeah, it's all fun and games till you find out the new working definition of wealthy is fast becoming the higher tax rate threshold - at which point you phase out of becoming a worker for rhetorical purposes.

I’m so intrigued as to how the mansion tax / whatever she’s going to call it will work.
Who gets to decide what a house is worth?
A house is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it, and given the housing market is seriously unpredictable at the moment, good luck with placing a reliable value on houses at the top end, where most of the unpredictability exists!

Also, Rachel Reeves house….did anyone zoom in and see the weird sheets over windows upstairs…I think accountant / financial people are generally quite precise / bean countery and just didn’t get that vibe from that house. It was much more haphazard than I’d expect from a personality type whose passion is numbers

I think they will go additional council tax bandings, or a gradual revaluation.

Well, they had better bank on an expansion of the welfare budget - jobless numbers are set to climb, and without being glib, because of their nonsense, I am confident there will be an increasing number of people claiming some kind of MH support.

Actions & consequences.

Yes. It really does feel like Covid. The gaslighting, the digital ID no one wants, just to control, the lies and manipulation. No wonder they’re so disliked.

How anyone is still batting for them on here, god knows

Rivalled · 01/11/2025 09:02

Ed Balls was saying on the political currency pod he thought digital ID was another unpopular mistake - that they seem to be focusing on policies nobody wants.

Rivalled · 01/11/2025 09:06

They can’t read the room - their favourite party to copy, the SNP faced a revolt and a defeat over guardianship named adult stuff at the height of their popularity, people don’t want expansions of state control on their lives.

There's more talk of doing away with tax breaks on salary sacrifice and NI breaks for companies matching your pension contribution. What do they think will happen? Oh yeah, workers will stop paying into company pensions and companies will stop making extra contributions. DS firm matches it to 10% that's pretty generous for the private sector. At the moment, he's paying in 15% of his salary and getting the full 10% from his company, it's a lot going into his pension pot and it means his tax burden is actually reduced.

Yes I agree. Even Harriet Harman has weighed in on this. She said it was 'deplorable' if the govt were flying kites about rasing income tax just to toy with people. Are we supposed to feel grateful if it doesn't happen? Awful.

Thanks for the share. Its very telling that businesses are going direct to the OBR. They've obviously lost all confidence in No10 and No11 for that to happen.

Reeves has been entrusted with too much power.
Its akin to giving a teenager the keys to the drinks cabinet.

She is inebriated on her own perceived authority.

I am looking forward to her demise almost as much as Starmers.

Even if Reeves stepped down things wouldn't improve. It would probably get worse if anything.

This is on Starmer. All of it.

Exactly. She's just a mouthpiece now. Bell is running Treasury policy.

Osborne thinks the mooted incoming lurch to the left is a misreading of the election result - compelling. That’s right they’ve been far too anti business and anti ‘non-working’ people in their rhetoric.

a lurch to the left might help RR and KS in the party but not with getting re-elected.

great political currency episode.
