Labour isn't working - Thread 15

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yeah, that will be my husband dropping hours and me probably leaving teaching. Good to know that the people who bank roll the lower paid aren’t actually workers.

Hopefully no-one needs a GP, teacher, dentist or police officer soon. Obviously after around 5 years, these lowly professions aren’t workers anymore. Who needs them right?

I am sick of them confusing wealth and income. We have a high income but because of the cost and never ending tax we are not rich, we are comfortable. Broadest shoulders indeed, my mortgage says differently.

Absolute jokers.

Mmm, and good luck building a house with all the builders, plumbers and electricians hitting -not a worker- tax threshold by summer.

strawberrybubblegum · 28/10/2025 09:54

They're going to put 2p on all bands of tax, then remove it from basic rate NI only, aren't they?

That extracts more money from pensioners, investors, higher and additional rate income tax payers, but doesn’t change net income for basic rate tax payers.

It also doesn't raise as much as even 1p on basic rate tax payers, whilst distorting pro-social behaviour.

Sounds plausible.

They deliberately refused to specify what a working person was in the election campaign. If that definition is fluid, they can pretend that they haven't broken their manifesto pledges on tax.

Labour don't seem to understand that it is their lies and obfuscation causing their fall from grace.

Thank you for all your kind words @CaveMum his name is Bear and he’s 18 15-3 SSH x cob he has a very strong mind and a big personality I bought him after Covid when I had lost my three businesses and was a civil servant 😳. Things are getting tougher I am a landlord boo hiss my son was educated on a bursary at public school and I am a ducker and diver aka self employed grafter who runs a childrenswear company and is on day 14 of working looking forward to a run of 30 days from this weekend. Someone said upthread how they have seen incompetent and corrupt government but jeez never in my life time have I seen such a mess. I have several friends who we start every conversation with this fucking followed by cabinet person plan or government
do you think any of these freaks have friends ?!
Photo of the beast the picture makes me happy

Oooh, he’s beautiful! I work in racing so am surrounded by Thoroughbreds, they are the most gorgeous creatures and so incredibly willing to try and please. I am however not stupid enough to ever try and ride one! I rode for years (regular horses) but do not have the bottle to be zipping up the gallops onboard 500kg of muscle travelling at 35mph+

The Greens really wig me out. As a receptacle for gathering up the Momentum end of Labour, they are pretty useful at splitting the vote, but otherwise they are the worst of nutjobs.

They are going to be gathering up Lib Dems too because some members are losing their shit over the fact the party is now following the Supreme Court ruling over who actually counts as women for their quotas.

I was listening to a podcast this morning. The host said that gov insiders were finalising a definition of 'working people'. They will be defined as the lower 2/3rd of earners.

So when Labour say they will protect 'working people', it means those earning £45K or less (approx).
Anyone earning over £45K represents the top third, and will not qualify for protection as a working person.

If I never hear the phrase "working people" again I'll be delighted. It was coined to gaslight traditional Labour voters and those too disillusioned with the Conservatives to employ critical thinking, and here we are - demoralised and fearful, while watching a bunch of Marxists destroy the country and our way of life.

Our only hope is once they're out, some of their most destructive laws will be capable of being repealed.

I'm not a fan of Reform either.

But if I have to choose between them and Labour, then I know who I will choose.

Fucking hell. That's a shit choice to have to make! 😩

Same and “inherited”. I’d get them out not to hear that again.

Oh that's crazy, I wonder if they ever stopped to think what would happen if everyone on £45k+ stopped working?

That's bonkers. The only reason I earn more than that is because I, ummmmm, work! 🤯

Such an insane definition, if that's what they choose to run with.

If they do decide that's the batshit plan, I'd imagine the line will be drawn at higher rate tax payers. But who knows. 🤷‍♀️ Not like £45k is fucking rolling in it!

I'm not a HRT payer but my husband is. He works 60+ hours a week, is always tired and stressed. They always go for HRT payers, even the Conservatives did. Removing CB from single income households on 60K. I read on MN threads that people on 60K get UC. How the hell?
I've told my husband not to ever earn 100K as it won't be worth the hassle.
They'll probably cut pension relief for HRT payers too. A double whammy. Just means that any future pay rises are wiped out for years. Then of course, the cost of living and everyone's just standing still or becoming worse off.
Anyway, we would love to give up work or go part time but can't until this mortgage is paid off. I knew labour would go for HRT payers. They were bound too.
Why aren't they cutting benefits?

Rivalled · 28/10/2025 10:41

We need fundamental reforms we have so many systems killing incentives. Paul Johnson’s times article makes it clear only raising tax on basic rate tax payers will raise significant amounts now.

the punishing of the higher rate tax payers is simply symbolic and for rhetoric and posturing purposes.

yes, I do blame the conservatives for ducking reforms and raising taxes for years - the failure of the centre ground didn’t come from nowhere, Cameron had a coalition at first, Brexit was hugely divisive, every govt has been just getting by for a long time.

We're both HRT payers - and have spent the last year mentally adopting the brace position because we have nowhere to hide.

RIP Prunella Scales.

Cue repeats of Fawlty Towers heavily-edited to remove the hurty words.

Catatemyhomework · 28/10/2025 10:53

I love Fawlty Towers. I have fond nostalgia of being a kid in those days. Probably seeing it through rose tinted specs, but in my opinion they were better times.

I used to be a HRT payer and then went part time. Then I became self employed and had periods of not earning well. As a self employed person, I make it my duty to pay as little tax as possible. My husband is PAYE and so caught by the short and curlies.

Yes must remove the hurty words. Meanwhile the whole point of the show is lost and no longer funny.

'Don't mention the war!'

That was brilliant. That was the same one as him being in hospital. That was so funny. God I miss those days. 40 years and everything changed for the worst. My kids often tell me they wish they could have been young when I was. I tell them that at least they're not 53 now! 😂

I was chatting to a fellow Gen X client the other day and saying that I was sad for my kids that they'd never have an equivalent time to the 90s for us. It was such an amazing decade and there won't be anything which feels like that again.

Totally agree with you. I was a 90s raver. Fantastic times!
