Daughter in hospital - full thickness burns

Title says it all really. I took dd to have her hair coloured today - and she's ended up in burns ward, with full thickness chemical burn on her forehead and a 50/50 chance of needing a skin graft. WTF??? Can't believe it.

Am in bits.

It's still unbelievable to me that I drop her off to get her hair done and she's going to be dealing with the impact for the rest of her life. She's such a fabulous young woman, and I'm so proud of her.

Hopefully after Xmas the legal stuff will have moved forward. I'm feeling sad for the hairdresser - see on Facebook that she lost her dad a couple of weeks ago. V mixed emotions.

Kindly, that isn't your concern. I appreciate you're probably an empathetic person but there's no correlation between the two events. The salon didn't give a second thought to what your child has experienced, so I certainly wouldn't waste precious time worrying about the hairdresser and her circumstances.
If she had other things going on at home meaning she couldn't cope with work, she should've got herself signed off work.

i say this with every photo post but it is really healing amazingly, her surgeon did an amazing job. Onwards and upwards, I hope she’s been given good scar maintenance advice from the nurses, it can do wonders.

Sadly v little advice given once discharged from the plastics clinic. She went to community wound care clinic once - who were useless, only advice was to use vaseline and to buy a new little tub rather than use an old one at back of cupboard....

OP, please check with skin graft experts but I was recommended to use Bio Oil for my husband’s skin graft removal scar and where the graft was used. Both very well healed.

Andepeda · 23/12/2025 13:16

Bio oil here too.

I had great success with my graft using stratamed (although any silicone cream would do, don’t think the brand matters but that’s the brand I got given) but doable check obviously if you can with the team.

Would recommend silicon gel such as dermatix or siliderm or you can get gel sheets. Your gp might be willing to prescribe or the burns dept if still seeing them.

nocoolnamesleft · 23/12/2025 21:50

Also bear in mind the skin is likely to be more sensitive to sunburn.

Morning OP,
Just popping in to say I hope that yourself, DD and rest of family have a lovely Christmas, despite everything that happened.

Thankyou for keeping us all posted and so pleased DD's healing process is going well.
🎅 🎁

Nightmarehairinjury · 24/12/2025 08:25

@Petitchat and to you too! It's our first Xmas without my Mum so feels a bit odd, but we're getting on with things.

Google (and I think this thread) had suggested silicone gel, so she's been using it on her thigh. Reluctant to use anything other than moisturiser on her head while it's still so spotty.

Thanks so much for the support - I don't feel like I can talk about it in real life, feel like we should just be moving on now.

If I can give your daughter one piece of advice it is to protect the scar/graft for a year from the sun.
I had a skin graft taken from the side of my leg for the back of my arm but was not given any advice. The year is happened we had a very hot summer and I was out & about plus sunbathing, which has resulted in a shiny discoloured graft on my arm. I have since found out after any surgery that involves grafts etc you should protect the area from any sun for at least a year.
Since the graft, I have had an operation on my foot and had a 3 maybe 4 inch incision. I religously covered it everytime I went outside for over a year and you would have to look very closely to see the faint scar that I have on my foot.

Just an update, DD doing well, wound continuing to heal. No appointment yet for follow up - expecting it late Jan. Hairdresser hasn't responded to subject access request yet - fuckers. Solicitor following it up.

Got some pink toning drops for dd, patch test underway and will be applied well away from her roots/ scalp.

Ineffable23 · 10/01/2026 17:14

Glad to hear she's doing well. That's poor on the SAR - how long has it been? It feels like you need that information to make the best case. Presumably if they continue to ignore they'll be reportable to the ICO for enforcement action?

Nightmarehairinjury · 10/01/2026 17:37

It was submitted beginning of December - so not too late yet. Even without it I hope we have a good case.

You absolutely have a case and the refusal to give the SAR request is just further proof they are covering up.

And if they say they don't have any info, it shows that they didn't investigate how/why it happened...

JustMyView13 · 11/01/2026 11:10

At the very least, is should be recorded in their accident book. I’m certain their insurance would have wanted to know to be notified too.

OP, thanks for keeping us updated. I'm so invested in this now for you all I want a good outcome, physically for your daughter and monetarily for the damage she has endured and lasting damage she may have. 🤗

Ineffable23 · 11/01/2026 21:56

Wow, I am no expert at all, but that looks like it is healing really nicely?

Daytimetellyqueen · 11/01/2026 23:20

Just seen your thread Op - looks like amazing progress & that it’s healing well (I’m no expert so I hope that is the case!)

NOTANUM · 12/01/2026 00:42

She looks really well and it’s clearly healing nicely. She is indeed very brave!

Nightmarehairinjury · 30/01/2026 22:21

Latest update, well I suppose there isn't one. Hairdresser still not responded to subject access request. Letter of intimation to be sent soon, they have 3 weeks to send to their insurers and then insurers have 3 months to investigate and respond. I assume hairdresser thinks if they ignore it we'll go away. This mum is not going away. DD doing OK. Still sweating headband to school, not much change re wounds, hair still a mess.

grumpygrape · 30/01/2026 22:32

OP, thanks for the update. The hairdresser is treading a dangerous line by ignoring your solicitor. Please do keep updating us, many of us are rooting for you and your daughter.
