A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

The arse has completely dropped out of the support for Labour in Wales. If this by-election produces results like that I expect it will be a total wipeout in the Senedd Elections for them.

I bloody hope so.

Labour is braced for a historic defeat at the upcoming Caerphilly by-election, as its seeks to fend off a growing threat from Reform UK and Plaid Cymru in its Welsh heartlands.

A Labour stronghold, the South Wales Valleys seat has been consistently represented by the party in the Senedd assembly since devolution in 1999. In national elections, it has also continuously returned Labour MPs to the House of Commons for over a century, although one defected to the Social Democratic party in 1981. However, the October 23 election could see the governing party lose its Senedd seat, with the latest polls putting Labour at just 12 per cent in Caerphilly and sending shockwaves through the party.

FT

Well, it appears that Welsh Labour have ceased to be the party of ordinary working people. Instead they now represent public sector graduates, minorities rights activists, benefit claimants and net zero zealots. People have evidently had enough.

At mayoral question time in London Susan Hall has been asking Sadiq Khan about grooming gangs in London (as she has before). It seems he has trouble understanding what she means by 'groups of men taking young girls and grooming them for sex', whichever way she forms the phrase.

I get the impression, but I could be mistaken, that he is pressing her to describe the men in the gangs in a certain way, but she is not doing that. Perhaps he has the idea that it is only men of a certain type who go in for such behaviour?

Has this happened again?

amicisimma · 20/10/2025 14:47

Sorry, I wasn't clear. It is from 9 months ago, but I'm not hearing of any further investigations into what is (quite likely) going on in London, despite the grooming gangs inquiry starting.

If anyone knows if Sadiq Khan is indeed pushing for investigations into the situation in London, as it is the largest city in the country, I'd be interested to know.

Upstartled · 20/10/2025 14:52

I just thought he'd rehashed the same tactics again. Yes, there's lots of evidence that there is grooming gang activity in London and I don't think that Khan has made any progress of pulling his head out of his arse on that in the last nine months.

‘Ms Goddard also expresses deep reservations about the shortlisted chairs for the inquiry. Her resignation comes after Sky News revealed the two leading candidateswere former police chief Jim Gamble and social worker Annie Hudson, who are due to meet the survivors panel on Tuesday.
Ms Goddard's letter states: "One has a background in police and the other, a social worker. The very two services that contributed most to the cover-up of the national mass rape and trafficking of children.’

Why on earth aren’t they appointing completely independent chairs for the enquiry?? You wouldn’t have eg. Rail company bosses chairing an enquiry into a rail accident / poor performance; or MOD staff chairing an enquiry into MOD failings.

Beggars belief. Yet again these girls, now women, being severely let down.

Leading candidates to chair grooming gangs inquiry revealed - with both set to face a survivors' panel this week

The two prospective candidates are former police officer Jim Gamble and social worker Annie Hudson.

Another hospitality failure notified today: news.sky.com/story/pizza-hut-to-shut-68-restaurants-in-uk-after-company-behind-venues-falls-into-administration-13453961

NoWordForFluffy · 20/10/2025 15:16

Oh, this sucks. I expect this will be another victim of the high energy costs/ inflated minimum wage - ni hike - hospitality cluster fuck.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/10/2025 15:23

Yep, I'd imagine it's tipped them over the edge. My kids will be devastated if ours shuts as they love it! It's one of the few restaurants they will eat at (autistic, particular food preferences).

redange · 20/10/2025 15:26

First it will be the ordinary food businesses like 'Pizza Hut' then it will make it up to the Bella Italia's Zizi's, GBK etc. In the end the only restaurants that will be left will be in 5 star hotels or £200 a head Michelin Star places. Thus the only people who will eat out will be Footballers and Media Stars. This i suspect was how it was before Berni Inns come on to the market in the 1960's and opened up the concept of dining to UK people.

I would recommend looking particularly at those chains run by P/E - they will be especially vulnerable given their leverage etc.

redange · 20/10/2025 15:29

I have wondered though how Pizza Express have managed for twenty years always empty . Maybe they are the original 'American Candy Shops'!

Rivalled · 20/10/2025 15:38

I wonder at the lack of emotional intelligence it takes to not foresee that people that have been police or social workers might not be the best candidates to look into, amongst other things, allegations of institutional cover ups…

@CaveMum that rest is money is quite scary - I’m half way through and it’s all ‘fairer ways to raise Mel tax’ and not a lot on the fact that we are fully taxed…but it is absolutely critical of RR isn’t it for not foreseeing this.

Rivalled · 20/10/2025 15:39

amongst small scary details rest is money said councils are factoring in 4-5 percent c tax increases for the next 4 years was it?

and that’s not going to be enough!

I need to re listen as frankly, it’s a bad bad situation.

Our council has raised the tax by 10% for the last three years and have warned it will be the same next April. That's 40% in four years

Rivalled · 20/10/2025 15:45

Bloody hell….

My daughter is experiencing the employment cuts. She works for Superdrug, she's trying to save money for uni next year. She can't get more than 20 hours a week. She's available full time but it's cheaper to employ two people on 20 hours a week than one on 40. How the hell did we get here? She says all her friends are having the same issue across retail and hospitality.

Rivalled · 20/10/2025 17:11

I’m catching up on the rest is money from the previous week with someone from Reed on ‘what are the jobs of the future’ and saying there’s been a big drop off in hiring of young people both graduate and other jobs…

To use a poker analogy, Labour inherited a marginal hand last summer, which they have then proceeded to play exceptionally badly.

That's strange. I wonder why that is.

Is the 20 hours guaranteed or is she on a zero hours and she keeps getting given 20?
