Speeding teen driver - DS a passenger WWYD

DeadMansBones · 11/10/2025 13:10

My DS was out with friends last night, DS is 17 driver of the car is 18. I get a notification via life360 app that the car is driving at 102 mph and 67 risky incidents. The route driven was down back roads that are unlit and dangerous. WWYD?

But there's nothing she can do with that information. There is absolutely nothing in this incident that is legally provable. And going to the person's parents is likely to be counter-productive, as OP's son will be furious and block life 360. Also she doesn't know the parents and they are almost certainly going to stick up for their son and just say the app was wrong.

She'll no longer have her son's trust, and will have achieved nothing. Her options are extremely limited.

Edited

I was just replying to OP saying she would be tempted if she knew who they were, not making any call on whether she should or not.

I worked somewhere years ago where 4 of the apprentices went out in the car of their newly passed friend
Only one of them survived the crash
Yanbu, op
You need to tell someone...school, parents, police...

DeadMansBones · 11/10/2025 17:55

The school will do that just from a first name? Really?

No DS will not and he is also very prone to lying recently and the more I try and control what he's doing the more he tries to hide it

Good grief

I’d be willing to make a complete tit of myself over pursuing every avenue

you just happy with mumsnetting about it

🤷‍♀️ each to their own

The schools not even open fgs. I don't know anything more about the boy, I'm blocked on DS's social media so can't try and find him on there. I have already said that DS could even be lying about who he was with.

At 17 it’s pretty difficult to stop him getting in a car with his friend.

conversations about the consequences of speeding are a priority.

you could report the driver to the police using your life 360 evidence. Probably not enough for a conviction but maybe enough for a knock on the door

MrsWhites · 11/10/2025 18:01

I’d be amazed if at 18 he doesn’t need a black box or smart app for his insurance. They track his speed, braking etc so he may find his insurance is cancelled if he continues to drive like this.

I think you're possibly mistaken.
They don't give cars to lads of 18 who are ND.

they do

My friend’s ND daughter has just got a notability car. She’s 18.5.

How old are your children out of interest? You might change your tune once they are almost adults, I know I have.

Change my tune about making a complete tit out of myself if there’s a chance I’ll protect my child?

Nah. That won’t ever change

I would actually not go down the police/school approach yet, especially as it’s unlikely to go anywhere and it sounds like a lot of the communication is falling apart between you two and I’d be worried about him just putting on airport mode etc and hiding more stuff.
you can really hammer home the point about teen accidents and you’re always willing to pick him up etc before going for the more nuclear options.

HazelHedgehog · 11/10/2025 18:12

I would have literally lost my shit, firstly he never ever get back in car with idiot driver. Show him the awful stories , the pictures of the teenagers that have died. The drivers parents need to be informed. I am usually quite relaxed but this is a huge thing for me due to awful personal experience.

Thank you. Our relationship is fragile at the moment but it has only been like that for the last 7-8 months, just one relationship with someone that wasn't a good influence changed everything. Before that I would say that he was very honest and used to tell me a lot.

He will simply just not use the app any more and then I won't even be able to do anything in the moment if it happens again.

I have made a tit out of other situations with him recently thinking I was keeping him safe and guess what it just made it worse and made him trust me less and lie more. It's really not as straightforward as you think it is.

No, they will not.

Sorry is that offensive? The person I quoted was just talking about whoever the disabled person was who had been awarded the Motability car and as far as I'm aware it's the boy himself due to his autism

If the car is the 18 year olds he won't have it for long once he is forced to install Drive Smart. His reckless driving will have him banned from the scheme. Even if it isn't his car, he will still lose the vehicle.

Is that something that is installed on all Motability vehicles?

Tell your son and his friends to watch the film’Olivia’s story’ to see how stupid teen driving can destroy lives

All of them with drivers under 30 now come with Drive Smart, compulsory. Existing scheme members will be having them added too. I'm not sure of the timescale but it will be soon.

That's good to know. Is it quite a recent thing? I think this lad has been driving for around a year
