What would be your life tip?

I am slowly approaching 40, which obviously means I’m having a bit of a pre mid-life crisis. With that, I’m taking stock of things and seeing what small changes I can implement for the next 40 years.

So give me your best tips and tricks and life advice.

For younger me, I would have said just do the thing (whatever it is in the situation), put yourself out there. You’ll love it.

For me now, I’m working through and putting together my financial plans. They’re ok, but need optimising.

But I don’t plan to stop there - the last maybe 5-10 years I’ve lost myself a little so now I’m ready for my revival.

So I’m ready to hear all your wise words!

A few from me.

Don't live with regret. If you need to say something to someone, say it.

You can't control anyone else's behaviour- only your own.

Assume other people mean well. Don’t assume they want to hurt you. Everyone has had their heart broken. It makes it easier to love them if you remember that.

I don't think that this is good advice, unless you know them well.

My husband died. Maybe that coloured my view of people? So much help on offer, never happened!
Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike people, very much the opposite, but I don't let anyone get close any more.

Start a pension as early as possible. No matter how small, even if it’s £1 a week at first, get the pension going. At the average return of 6% per year, over 50 years, that would be worth 250k. When you get a job and are offered the opportunity to join a company pension, do it. Your employer will also add money to it so it’s free money. Your older self will thank you for doing it.

Also, if something you’re bothered about isn’t going to be a problem next week, don’t waste your time thinking about it. If it isn’t going to be a problem next month, think about it but not for long. If it is going to be a problem next year, spend the time you need to work out how to fix it.

Yeah.... putting £1 a week into a pension for 50 years will not give you £250k.

When choosing a life partner, go for honesty, respect, etc rather than lust!

Fill your boots for boyfriends/girlfriends for lust/sex when you're young and free, but when you start wanting to get serious, settle down, live together, get married, have children, go for honesty and respect and someone sensible/mature who will hold down a good job for the long term, and actually liking each other as people - i.e. ensure you're "in love" with a soul mate/life partner rather than being "in lust" with someone who gets you off but you don't actually like/respect as a person!

Lust/sex is for your teenage and early 20's - it almost certainly won't last through middle aged and into retirement! (Yes I know it does for some!). For the long term, you want honesty, respect, maturity, and someone who will have your back.

Don’t make yourself indispensable

Don’t spend money on stupid shit, save it

Keep moving

If something is bothering you, do something about it, if you don’t want to or can’t do anything about it, stop thinking about it.

Dont diet, ever...it will backfire! And don't be stupid like me doing a 5 day juicing

I disagree. Having a healthy diet makes life a lot better. I agree with no fad diets.

feellikeanalien · 06/10/2025 19:33

Dont stick your head in the sand. Deal with things as soon as you realise there might be a problem. It never just goes away, only gets worse.

Don’t leave it late to have baby if you can - or you’ll be 55 with a 13 year old and no chance of early retirement!

Don’t get a puppy when you’re 70. Or at least not a longlived bouncy breed!

Overpay your mortgage and pension if you can, even if it’s not very much and not very often . No foreign holiday is better than financial security.

Never give up your financial independence.

Accept that life is sometimes not fair, and sometimes there is nothing you can do. But fight, fight, fight for what you can change.

Lift weights. Walk.

Do no harm, take no shit.

Notthatgameagain · 06/10/2025 20:35

Just be yourself, if others don't like it then they are not your people.

Thisismynewname23 · 05/10/2025 21:08

Would it be worth starting one at 45? I’ve never been able to have one before with unexpected serious illness and mortgage taking priority to keep a roof over our heads, now I can afford £500 a month but is it still worth doing at 45? X

Yes!!! It is definitely still worth it

Macaroni46 · 07/10/2025 15:45

Learn to be self-reliant. You’re basically on your own in this life.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 07/10/2025 16:11

Don't get fat. If you do, work hard to lose it asap. Don't gain 2 stone during a lock down due to a global pandemic and then spend your 40s unable to lose it!!

Make an effort with your friends don't let them do all the contacting. Pick up the phone. You won't always be so busy but if you don't put in the effort now you may not have them around when the easier days come.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 07/10/2025 16:15

Use the expensive table ware and glasses.

Buy high quality items. Even if you have to wait longer to save for them.

abracadabra1980 · 07/10/2025 21:33

I forgot to add this one to my PP ... "the customer is NOT always right", they can be an absolute TWAT. As I run my own business, especially if they are arsey with a young member of staff, I don't stand for it. Gone. Cancelled. Goodbye. I'm very lucky in that most of my customers are lovely, and loyal.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/10/2025 13:13

Learn to cook from scratch, using cheap, seasonal and local ingedients. This will go a long way towards managing good health and finances.

Oh yes, the Sunscreen song! The only song i didn't pay enough attention to at aged 18, and am noq regretting it at age 44...I particularly like the part where it says "Floss. Respect your elders. Dance..." and "Don't rely on anyone else - you never know when it might run out"
