But he broke the law.

Plenty of young men die in car crashes all the time, the only thing notable about this one is that he had a widely reported previous error of judgment. Yes, it's horrible for his family. But the police aren't to blame, nor is the girl's mother.

What was his previous 'error of judgement'? Having consensual sex with a young woman whom he liked and wanted to see again?

Lndnmummy · 06/10/2025 23:10

nomas · 06/10/2025 14:39

Again, you don't know this, we have never had the mother's side of the story.

Edited

There is information in the public domain as part of the investigation. The mother's motives and 'side of the story' is out there.

Yes because he did it in a country where it was against the law.

Give it a rest. The young man is dead.

I see nomas is on the end of “your posts are diagusting” too.
i am all for forceful discussion and expression but shouting people down and bullying people isn’t what I thought would be tolerated.
what happened to respecting each others opinions?

I could imagine the opposite - you spend a year unfairly jailed, you come home angry at the world and probably feeling a lot of doors have closed on you. So you become reckless and wild. Especially as a teenaged boy.

It's so sad because with time he could well have matured, settled, gone on to live a life.

Those were my thoughts too. Poor lad.

It’s because, based on the facts we know, the mother had zero reason to report the incident to the UAE authorities.

She didn’t want her daughter to date him? She was angry that her daughter engaged in premarital sex? There are better ways to handle these concerns, rather than getting the Emiratis to throw this guy in jail.

And for that people are labelled as making “disgusting” and “shameful” posts?

without knowing all the facts and a statement of intent from the Mother it is all conjecture. For whatever reason she chose to report Fakana and there was found to be an offence committed.

she didn’t put him in a car next to an unlicensed and uninsured driver in the early hours of the morning. Whether I agree with what she did is irrelevant but it is deplorable to see many women, other mums as well, attacking her for doing so.

RingoJuice · 07/10/2025 07:59

While I agree she did not put him in that car, she did make the final year of his life hellish. She deserves the scorn.

It's quite simple. There aren't any possible facts or circumstances which could justify what she did.

Most "other mums" on here have more sympathy with the mother who lost her son twice, once temporarily to a Dubai jail and then permanently, than they do for the mother who was so outraged by the idea of her daughter having sex with Marcus Fakana that she got her revenge by having him jailed in a foreign country.

Lampzade · 07/10/2025 09:55

The mother of the young girl knew exactly what she was doing when she reported a young black man to the authorities in Dubai .
She waited until she got home because she knew that if she had reported the incident while in Dubai her daughter would have been in trouble

She is not directly responsible for his death, but one wonders whether the trajectory of his life was altered by her actions which led him to be somewhere where he might not have been.

HelpMeUnpickThis · 07/10/2025 12:39

DancingNotDrowning · 04/10/2025 12:02

Im pretty certain at the time he was jailed he was reported as being a good student who had not been in any previous trouble.

in the absence of any suggestion he was a PITA who regularly engaged in risky behaviours why would you assume he was?

@DancingNotDrowning we know why @Chiseltip made the assumption that he was a PITA despite multiple reports saying that he was a well behaved child with a good behaviour record, did well at school and was in a long term relationship with the girl in Dubai.

We know why @Chiseltip is judging this young man. It's obvious.

Clavinova · 06/10/2025 19:30

She was 3 months younger than him

The girl was at least 9 months younger - Marcus' legal team fudged/lied about the age gap, albeit by only 6 months or so. Marcus was 19 last January, the girl possibly 19 this month (his legal team indicated that her birthday was in October, although of course they may have fudged that as well).

Why don't you talk about the fact that the girl was found with birth control pills on her. That was a clear decision that she made - presumably because she wanted to be in the relationship but not get pregnant.

Or perhaps she used the morning-after pill?

@Clavinova

WHY are you making things up? The reports literally say that they were birth control pills and they were in a long term relationship.

Why on earth would you suggest it was MAP?

You can't just make stuff up.

I'm not making anything up:

2024
Marcus Fakana, 18, was charged by Dubai authorities after having an alleged “holiday romance” with a 17-year-old staying at the same hotel, with whom he planned to carry on a relationship with on their return home.

The construction apprentice from London was on holiday with his family in Dubai in September when he met a fellow British teenager at his hotel, and they began a romantic relationship that became sexual.

Detained in Dubai’s founder Radha Stirling [said]; "He does not deserve to be locked up in Dubai Central Prison for a fling.”

You don't need to have sympathy for the girl's mum, but I also don't think people need to make racist assumptions about her either, without knowing her side of the story.

What side of the story could there possibly be in which she isn't a vindictive bitch who deliberately set out to destroy an 18 year olds life?

Her mother found contraceptive pills in her bag. If it was MAP it would have been taken and gone. That she had some when they met on holiday suggests they are either for health or for ‘in case’. Either is fine, I’m not judging, but neither is a reason for t( mum to ruin someone’s life.

Do you have a link?

Most news outlets reported that the mother discovered the relationship after looking at her daughter's phone.

I was responding to your assumption that the relevant birth control was MAP. If you don’t th8nk there was any, what was your point?

Pretty obvious what my point/suggestion was if you follow the thread.

I was replying to a post from HelpMeUnpickThis;

'Why don't you [pp] talk about the fact that the girl was found with birth control pills on her. That was a clear decision that she made.'

I suggested the MAP as I knew that the relationship had been described as a 'holiday romance/fling'.

You then sounded quite sure of your facts;

'Her mother found contraceptive pills in her bag.'

And him so young. Imagine having something that bad happen to you just as you are starting out in life. Apparently he wanted to move on and do something with his life to ensure that the same didn’t happen to others.

Also, it is unclear why the police stopped the car (according to the family the young men went out to buy milk). We do not know if the car was uninsured etc. We assume it is gang related because it happened in Tottenham and because they are young black men. once someone speculates about that on sm it is regarded as the truth.
