Do you wear an apron for cooking?

Just that. Was chatting with a friend who thinks its really unusual in anyone under 80 😆

So answer please…
A — yes always
B — sometimes, if the cooking is particularly messy
C — never

and how old are you?

Me - A 56

OP posts:

67 year old me - B. My 35 year old son in law (who cooks from scratch most days) always wears one

ChiefCakeTestertoMaryBerry · 02/10/2025 11:19

Yes - 40s - helps keep clothes clean.

Well that just confirmed exactly what I thought. Age has got absolutely nothing to do with it!!!

From the answers I think it does, it would seem the oldest ones on here always wear an apron and the younger people wear one sometimes or never

TubeScreamer · 02/10/2025 13:59

B 54

But OP's friend said it was very unusual for anyone under 80 to wear an apron, and the numbers here don't bear that out.

A 47 am very messy and have a massive apron I love. I wear for eating messy food too!

morellamalessdrama · 02/10/2025 15:07

B - 45

ComedyGuns · 02/10/2025 15:28

A - 50s. I wear a lot of white or light coloured tops and cook a lot of big pot saucy stuff that can stain.

Wherethewildthingsfart · 02/10/2025 15:31

B mid 40’s. I am really clumsy and quite chaotic in the kitchen.

Dutchhouse14 · 02/10/2025 15:51

B 54- but only in Xmas day when I really want to keep my clothes clean, wearing an apron is a special occasion 😁
Tbh I'm messy so I should probably be permanently in a tabard bib type thing!
Cooking, cleaning, gardening, eating, but perhaps because I'm messy I dont bother, unless it's Xmas day!

MeatballMenu · 02/10/2025 15:52

But does anyone wear their apron to the toilet?

Sgtmajormummy · 02/10/2025 16:34

B- I’m 57.

When I AM wearing one it shows I mean business, either for a batch cooking session or making something complicated.

I have a brown one with grommets and clips for dirty housework.
A grey Japanese one for hanging out laundry. The clothes pegs go in the deep pocket and I often gather the clothes in the wide skirt.
Three William Morris ones for cooking. I often have a towel over my shoulder for hand wiping and grabbing hot pans.

I made three cute aprons for DD when she was little, with the traditional cross back straps, just like I had. You take the waist strings and stitch them to the bib corners, put on over their head and slip their arms through.

I really miss my PVC coated apron from the 90s (Guinness label). It got too paint spattered to use for cooking.

My remedy for grease spots is talcum powder. As DGM used to say: “ First the the stain absorbs the powder, then the powder absorbs the stain”

and never seen anyone else wear one either. Didn’t think anyone has worn them since the 70s! I forget about suburbia.

Why is cooking in clothes you’ve been wearing ‘gross’? Are you rubbing the food over your clothes? Or have you been rolling in drippy liquid shit?

people are so weird!

Whatwouldnanado · 02/10/2025 18:10

A 50s messy bugger. I have a variety.

TulipTuesday · 02/10/2025 18:16

I get changed in to trackie style bottoms and scruffy tops when I’m home so don’t feel the need to protect them from food mess. I couldn’t bring myself to cook in my normal clothes!

Would an apron stop cooking smells being absorbed in to clothes? That’s my biggest bugbear.

A 60's. I always manage to spill/splash something down my ample bosom.

Zippedydodah · 02/10/2025 18:39

Besides A and being 71 I have very early memories of wearing an apron as a tiny child, standing on a chair, up to the work surface at my gran’s, helping to make scones. I have worn one all my life pretty much for cooking or doing art work and gardening.

Timeforabitofpeace · 02/10/2025 18:54

When I think about it I only wear one for making pastry and bread. Odd.

@Shakemesexy It’s definitely nostalgia in my case as my Mum wore one back in the 1970’s and ‘80’s. It makes me think of her.

No different to clothing choices tbh, some people dress in clothes from a certain era, don’t they, 1950’s-style, for example. Presumably, they want to feel connected to that era and it makes them happy.
