What do you eat because it is good for you but you don’t actually like it?

I’m not a big fruit lover but just looked in the fridge and thought, I must buy some raspberries and strawberries but I don’t actually like them so I eat a few then they go off within a day or two and I end up throwing them out. Teen dc doesn’t like them either!

I do like bananas and avocados and lots of veg just not fruit particularly.

What do you buy and make yourself eat because it’s good for you but you don’t actually like it?!

Chickpeas
Tofu
Houmous
Quinoa

Hate them all but I’m vegan so they are useful. Can’t stand the taste of any of them.

Tofu and quinoa are horrible.

Avocados make me gag. Claggy tasteless mush. No matter how I dress it up, it’s vile.

BettyTurpinPies · 02/10/2025 23:05

I really like avocado, but dislike people who are needlessly descriptive about why they hate certain food.

deeahgwitch · 03/10/2025 13:44

I agree Avocados are tasteless mush. Every so often I buy them, eat them and then think why did I bother.

I love quinoa! Nice texture and a nutty flavour.

Me too, I’m genuinely really surprised folks are sitting eatinv food on the regular they dislike as they think it’s good for them.

take the poster forcing down 4 bananas a week, why not just have an electrolytes drink if you want potassium, or take a supplement, or eat any of the irher foods high in potassium, potatoes, beans, green veg, avocados etc.

i don’t think their is any single food where you can only get a vitamin from, there is always multiple sources.

Unfortunately as you age you can develop intolerances or auto immune issues that prevent you eating what you like and you have to substitute things you find less palatable in order to ensure that you get what you need nutritionally. Artificial vitamins or supplements don’t always do the job.

My sister has an auto immune condition which means that she has had to eliminate anything containing milk protein from her diet. No milk, yoghurt, dairy icrecream, milk chocolate, cheese. Awful, especially as she needs to maximise her calcium levels due to osteopenia. Means she has to consume a lot of tinned sardines ( she hates them) and kale poor soul. Lactose free cheese ( I love Arla) still has milk protein so is no good for her.

A good avocado is nutty and has a creamy texture. They're good in soups and stews, or with grains to add a creaminess. Or on toast, with lime juice and a zesty spice mixture.

Vegetables - aubergines are ok; but we suspect they upset DH’s stomach!

Nightshade intolerance possibly

DilemmaDelilah · 04/10/2025 09:36

There are lots of things I don't like but, in the main, I just don't eat them.

The exception is vegetables. I am not keen on most vegetables, but there are a few that I eat anyway because it is important to eat vegetables. Beans, also. I can eat (and enjoy) baked beans, but otherwise I'm not keen. I do make cassoulet and something I call Mediterranean meatballs, in a casserole with plenty of beans, as DH likes them and I can tolerate them if they are all flavoured up with plenty of garlicky meaty sauce.

OhNoNotSusan · 04/10/2025 10:01

i love brown rice
but am less keen on brown pasta, which i eat occasionally for the health benefits

Switcher · 04/10/2025 10:02

I only eat what I like. Life's too short and my pension sucks anyway.

We have wondered about that? We go to a Chinese, which does a fantastic dish of aubergines with pork mince. He loves it, eats loads, but always feels off afterwards and none of the rest of us do!

Ooh I make that and love it , Gok Wan recipe .
i can’t tolerate intense tomatoey 🍅things , citrus 🍊 , pickles , too much soy sauce , and have low tolerance for dairy .
I haven’t had any tests but I get stomach ache , flush intensely etc with some foods .
if I take too much dairy I feel nauseous

Daftypants · 04/10/2025 11:37

I don’t like quinoa because it sticks in my throat and my teeth ( I have 2 crowns )
I like crispy tofu but dislike it in other meals .
i don’t like rocket as it’s trying to choke me to death 😂
I do enjoy most fruit and veg but can’t really have tomatoes 🍅

I don't eat things I don't like but I eat a lot of things for health reasons when I would enjoy something unhealthy far more - I have salads every day full of beans, lentils, quinoa, beetroot, spinach, kale, avocado etc. I would much rather be eating a lovely cheese and pu joe sandwich and some prawn cocktail crisps.

I love the sound of that salad! More details if you have the time? ☺️
