What do you eat because it is good for you but you don’t actually like it?

I’m not a big fruit lover but just looked in the fridge and thought, I must buy some raspberries and strawberries but I don’t actually like them so I eat a few then they go off within a day or two and I end up throwing them out. Teen dc doesn’t like them either!

I do like bananas and avocados and lots of veg just not fruit particularly.

What do you buy and make yourself eat because it’s good for you but you don’t actually like it?!

@warmapplepies , it was probably more user-friendly advice than eat an avocado or a handful of nuts or apricots very few days.

Yes, I agree, bananas are readily available and more affordable than nuts or dried fruit.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 01/10/2025 13:52

Nothing, i just eat more of the good foods i do like, i eat lots of broccoli/cabbage/cauliflower/sugarsnap peas and sprouts .
I don’t each much fruit, the odd apple, love grapes and can eat loads but obviously they aren’t the best.

Cottage fucking cheese

I’ve never tried it so can’t say I don’t like it but the appearance just puts me right off

@LittleBitofBread , that's why the advice is '5 a day' for fruit and veg. 5 a day isn't enough, but it's more relatable than 'at least 9 a day'.

Once you start mentioning avocados, coconuts, apricots and nuts it starts to look expensive and an effort, but bananas are probably on the shopping list already.

(Ignore the Column headings - the chart is for people who need to avoid potassium)

Nothing, I'm not much of a fruit eater but I do like peaches, nectarines and mango, and I like most veg and salad.
I wouldn't say a eat a "healthy", diet, certainly not by MN mad rules, but I eat a varied diet, meat/fish/veggie/vegan, nuts, seeds, tofu etc.
I don't have a sweet tooth but I love cheese, and always have crisps in the cupboard.

Yes, I agree. NHS health advice is often pragmatic rather than ideal-world.

Your diet sounds great! I do think variety is the key, and not too much meat or processed foods. I'm impressed that you get seeds in; I'm sure my diet is very lacking in nuts and seeds but for some reason I find it hard to buy them or think of how to eat them.

MidnightMeltdown · 01/10/2025 14:11

Bananas. I like them when they are green and firm, but not when they start to go even a little bit brown. However, because I’ve bought them, I make myself eat them!

LarryIsMyRomanEmpire · 01/10/2025 14:13

I eaiter scatter them over salads, easier in summer, over a stir fry, or stir some into Greek yoghurt, which I eat a lot of as it's not sweet.
I'm the weirdo who has Christmas chocolate left at Easter, but I'd happily demolish a cheeseboard and do, just not too often.

I also like bananas quite green (just ripe enough that you can peel them without them doing that thing where they leave a layer of skin behind).
They're so sweet and cloying otherwise.

I don't tend to make salads, although I am OK at remembering to put sesame seeds in stir-fries and noodle soups etc. I don't really eat yoghurt either (partly I suppose because neither do I eat much fruit and they're often eaten together!).
If I'm making something with quinoa as an accompaniment I do sometimes add in mixed seeds. I just feel I should be eating them more and I'm just not quite in the habit enough, where I incorporate them without thinking.

Same here. I'm wondering if the mince pies are still edible.

deeahgwitch · 01/10/2025 14:22

Walnuts.
I’m not crazy about the taste of them but read somewhere they are good for brain health. (Half a walnut looks a bit like a brain).

Of course but that doesn’t mean you need to force yourself to eat something you hate!

How about toasted? They taste more mellow then, I find.

BettyTurpinPies · 01/10/2025 14:26

@warmapplepies , I wouldn't.

deeahgwitch · 01/10/2025 14:26

Thank you for the tip @LittleBitofBread but I’ll “suffer” the taste as that’s too much faff. 😀

If you have an air fryer or Wonder Oven, they toast things quickly and efficiently I usually burn mine. Or you can do them in a frying pan/shallow pan over a low-ish heat for a few minutes. You can toast a sizeable batch and keep them in an airtight container for a good few days.

FrenchandSaunders · 01/10/2025 14:41

I also hate fruit and don't eat any of it. I don't think I'm missing anything as it's full of sugar! I eat tons of veg and salad which I think is better for you.

Spampas · 01/10/2025 14:47

Mushrooms. Hate them - especially when they are whole. Have mushroom risotto tonight so at least I can chop them up small. Bleugh.

But why?

SepticPegsSepticLeg · 01/10/2025 14:54

Plain nuts.

I much prefer flavoured or salted but plain roasted is better. Stupid salts and flavourings.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 01/10/2025 14:55

Nothing, I genuinely like most healthy food, so am happy to eat plenty of fruit and veg and beans and legumes and so on.

I used to eat rice despite not being a fan, because it’s DH’s preferred carb, but now I have cauliflower rice instead.

The nurse told me to eat the banana a few times each week as my potassium was low so I did as I was told.

Ok but you can pick an alternate, she just used that as an example. Plenty of foods are high potassium, you should just habe said oh I don’t like them but will eat other high potassium foods instead, or pop an electrolyte or whatever, bananas are not the only source of potassium, you can even take a daily tablet.
