What do you eat because it is good for you but you don’t actually like it?

I’m not a big fruit lover but just looked in the fridge and thought, I must buy some raspberries and strawberries but I don’t actually like them so I eat a few then they go off within a day or two and I end up throwing them out. Teen dc doesn’t like them either!

I do like bananas and avocados and lots of veg just not fruit particularly.

What do you buy and make yourself eat because it’s good for you but you don’t actually like it?!

Mushrooms. Hate them - especially when they are whole. Have mushroom risotto tonight so at least I can chop them up small. Bleugh.

I hate them too. That is a food I refuse to eat, no matter the benefits.

So why are you eating them? That’s just silly.

@warmapplepies , I wouldn't.

Right, but the poster I was replying to said she hates bananas but ate them because a nurse told her to, which is just silly.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 01/10/2025 15:10

It's not silly really. It's good for gut biome to eat as wide a variety as possible. I also hate mushrooms but I blend them into pasta sauce to hide them from Ds1 who has an exceptionally limited diet. I can eat them too then and it's good for me as well.

Our local restaurant tops toasted brioche with mushrooms cooked in cream, garlic and white wine. I can eat that without it being hidden.... but not sure the other bits are all that good. 😆

Of course it’s silly. Nobody ever died or got sick because they didn’t eat enough bananas or mushrooms. There are so many ways to get the nutrients you need that nobody needs to eat things they hate.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 01/10/2025 15:49

Oh well. I guess people can make their own decisions about how they approach their health.

Of course. Doesn't stop it being daft though Grin

@warmapplepies , how do you know? Many people are clueless about nutrition - did you see that recent thread about started by a poster not losing weight despite hardly eating anything at all (apart from a large amount of carbs? it was probably a hoax).

How do I know what? Sorry, the thread has moved a bit quickly!

Yes, many people are clueless about nutrition, sadly, but that doesn't mean that eating things you hate is a sensible or sane thing to do, lol.

Speaking for myself I would be physically sick if I had to eat things I didn't like, but I do have sensory issues around food (autism) so maybe that's why it's so baffling.

I’m neither autistic nor do I have food sensory issues and I find it equally as baffling that folks are deliberately eating shit they don’t like as it’s good for them.

There is not one good reason to do that, not one.

Every single vitamin or mineral we need can be gotten from multiple sources, no one needs to be eating any foods instead they don’t like.

Thank you! Was starting to a feel a bit mad for a second!

Walnuts.
I’m not crazy about the taste of them but read somewhere they are good for brain health. (Half a walnut looks a bit like a brain).

I don't like them either, so I don't eat them.
I enjoy peanuts, cashews, pistachios and macadamias, so I eat those.
If I drop dead because I didn't eat walnuts or brazil nuts then so be it.

alfonzi · 01/10/2025 17:39

I’m mildly allergic to walnuts, I came out in a rash all over my body after eating a bunch of them as a kid.

I have never worried about what I’m missing out on by not eating walnuts lol ok I’m allergic but even if I just didn’t like them I wouldn’t eat them. There are other nuts I’m
not keen on and avoid.

I’m on a calorie deficit so I’m not going to waste any of my calorie allowance on something I dislike!

But tbf if someone is a super fussy eater and is lacking in a varied nutrient rich diet, I get why they would wind up eating stuff they don’t like for the good of their health.

Blablibladirladada · 01/10/2025 18:53

Nothing…sorry.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 01/10/2025 22:14

Nothing. There's no food I don't like.

Alhambraeva · 01/10/2025 22:16

Nothing - life is too short and I eat the seasonal whole foods I do like

AuraBora · 01/10/2025 22:23

The only vegetable I don't like is peas (I know, weird) but I make.myself eat them fairly often as my kids love them, they are cheap, easy and nutritious. We will always have some in the freezer even if all other veg has run out!
I can't manage more than a small portion though and certainly prefer to avoid anything with peas mixed in. They can only be served on the side and the only ones I can stomach are Birds Eye!

LuckyManifestations · 01/10/2025 22:49

Oh gosh!
Where to begin.
I dislike almost all unprocessed/healthy/low fat foods, but I am eating them every meal, every day now on a new health kick.
I have been diagnosed with ARFID so Im really pleased with myself for sticking at my new diet.

Funnywonder · 01/10/2025 23:26

I don’t eat anything I don’t like. I like most things though, apart from kale, avocados and cooked spinach. I like fruit when it tastes as it should but hate the inconsistency of both flavour and texture and all the faffing about with seeds and skin and juice, so I don’t bother very often😆

Spampas · 02/10/2025 13:21

@warmapplepiesyou could say the same about quite a few of the things are eating on this thread. I eat them because they are a strong anti-oxidant and are a good source of vitamin D so I eat more in the winter.

I’m sorry but I think it’s ridiculous that people are forcing themselves to eat things they eat, regardless of what “qualities” those foods might have.

pinkspeakers · 02/10/2025 13:46

Nothing I can think of! I enjoy all the food I eat. I love fruits, vegetables etc.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 02/10/2025 13:51

I don't eat things I don't like but I eat a lot of things for health reasons when I would enjoy something unhealthy far more - I have salads every day full of beans, lentils, quinoa, beetroot, spinach, kale, avocado etc. I would much rather be eating a lovely cheese and pu joe sandwich and some prawn cocktail crisps.

Terriblytwee · 02/10/2025 14:00

Chickpeas
Tofu
Houmous
Quinoa

Hate them all but I’m vegan so they are useful. Can’t stand the taste of any of them.

I adore peas and would eat them every day but I read somewhere they weren’t great if you were trying to lose wight, as I am despite buying a Star Bar and a packet of Prawn Cocktail crisps today 🙈
