Labour isn't working - Thread 11

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yep pay £2 for fresh OJ, fresh fruit, yoghurt, croissants and decent cereals OR "free" 1 slice of soggy toast

Exactly, and ours started an hour before school.

From the Reform Chairman…

As I write this, I am reading Kemi Badenoch’s plan to stop illegal immigration with incredulity. The bare-faced cheek of this plan knows no bounds. This is a desperate last-ditch attempt to hoodwink the British public into thinking the Tory party has the will and the plan to stop illegal migration. What I find even more extraordinary is that they have lifted our ’Operation Restoring Justice’ policy, launched just a few weeks ago, almost word for word.

This proves the Tories are tired, tremulous and toast.

It’s also worth remembering that the Conservatives were in power for 14 years, and if they were truly serious about leaving the ECHR, they would have done so long ago. Instead, they cling to vague rhetoric designed to win over voters they have betrayed time and time again. Do not forget that it was the Conservatives who got Britain into this mess. By the way, a poll by Merlin this week shows the public have no faith in the Tories when it comes to stopping the boats. They trust us.

Predictable response, but ouch!

I'm worried that Kemi has said that any tory MPs who don't get on board with it will not be able to stand as a conservative at the next election. Around a fifth of tory MPs haven't previously supported leaving the ECHR. That's a lot of MPs if they walk 😬.

Yes, some of these "free" clubs are only 20 mins before normal school opening . It's a fucking joke

I'd have sent my dc with a 'nil by mouth' note pinned to their jumpers if that's what was on offer 🤢.
What's the point in 20 minutes ffs.

I still can't believe it's nearly 2 months until the budget. I swear it was end of October last year. I think the stress of waiting my see me off. The stuff I'm imagining in my head is terrifying but likely very realistic. If they won't stop spending, we're all going to have to bend over and take it. I can see an IMF bailout next year. Things are going to get nasty.

Was just talking to my husband about this. We think it’s bad now and we know this bunch of bitter Labour tools are going to make it worse. The later date reminds of when I had a dissertation to do, and being a procrastinator, putting it off as long as possible. That’s all they’re doing. But why.

I haven’t heard anything at our school, not sure we have them, are they meant to be everywhere?

Catatemyhomework · 05/10/2025 20:19

The thing is, things haven't improved. Still can't get a gp appointment. My youngest's school is full of supply teachers. Honestly I feel that everything is hanging by a thread. I really wouldn't even object to slightly more tax, but I don't see any evidence of improvements. It feels that taxes go up and services get worse. Everyone talks about how amazing the Scandinavian countries are because they pay high taxes. Well, some of us already do. We have Scandinavian taxes and US style services. Basically if you need something urgent you have to pay anyway. I'm getting bloody pissed off with it.

I think the ‘why’ is so that they can float policy, and try to ‘manage’ the markets.

My belief (and hope) is that they receive a very poor reaction with gilts blowing out, and with Starmer throwing Reeves under the bus.

Some subsequent internecine warfare, with an early GE would work, although that’s probably an Xmas present I will not be getting.

EasternStandard · 05/10/2025 20:24

Our school is incredibly stretched financially so whatever nonsense Labour used to get people to buy into VAT is doing sod all. Funds are probably down because they’ve hit business so much.

I think a significant number of people in the UK - and in all demographics, are simply ‘giving up’.

Working hard, for most, simply doesn’t pay.

Indeed.

I generally speaking don't mind paying tax. But as a net contributor who pays for independent schooling and who more and more often pays for private healthcare this government just tells me I am a rich arsehole with the 'broadest shoulders' and i should both bleed, and be cursed by society and by my own government for it. I feel under siege and detested because I am not taking from the state.

Yep, same.
We received a begging letter at the start of term. They didn't even try and dress it up as a non uniform day/fundraiser thing. Just asked for £15 per child to get going.

No, many schools refused to take them up but Laboyr pushing them out with help of paid "breakfast advisors", you couldn't make it up!

Primary schools only.

Well said

I know that a number of us on this thread, have been adversely impacted by this horror show of a government. To all of you, my sincere sympathy.

The intense anger I feel for Starmer, Reeves and the others, has become a constant companion - I celebrate every nail in Labour’s coffin, however small that nail may be.

And yes, some days are better than others…

While there's no doubt whatever way it's presented it'll be bad news for anyone not in a union or employed in the public sector, I suspect the delay is simply that they really don't have a plan and are hoping their speech writers will come up with someone more palatable than, "we've wasted all the money we pilfered in last year's Budget and now we want more - not least because Rachel's wetting her knickers".

Yes and you get vilified on social media. I can't fathom it. You're freeing up school places and hospital beds, but you're the bad guy.

EmeraldRoulette · 05/10/2025 21:02

With regards to the Budget, I was surprised to hear that a friend who is very left-wing is also worried about it. She's recently had a big bonus from work though and I don't know if she's rethinking things after that.

I think there'll be an increase on inheritance tax or possibly a wealth tax.

My mum wants to know how any increase on inheritance tax would be timed. I suppose they just have to say "as of this moment, right now, if anyone dies and leaves an estate, there will be a higher tax to pay". You can't backdate it or forward date it really.

It's the value of the house she's thinking of, but obviously if she needs to pay for care, then it will be sold.

I still think there are millions of pounds in savings in pointless jobs. Like "breakfast advisor."

It seems any suggestion is always met with a cry of "oh that will hardly save anything". But add them up and I believe there's a lot of government waste. It's the unpalatable problem of redundancies. No one is ever going to take that on - or are they?

If anyone saw the Liz Truss interview on Triggernometry, that was quite interesting. I haven't heard many politicians address this. But I suppose by the time that she did the interview, she had absolutely nothing to lose.
