A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

My dislike of Red Ed is almost visceral, so I quite enjoyed these observations by Quentin Letts about Ed's speech on the last day of the conference - apart from the suggestion he could be a contender for PM should KS's detractors manage to topple him.

Ed for PM 😂😂

I just hope there is no mention of Reform or Nigel Farge at the Conservative Conference. I think that would go a long way to improving their standing if they laid out their mandate and discussed their proposed policies rather than run down Reform and Labour. Rise above ot Kemi!

I hope so too 🤞

I see the knives are out already for Kemi this morning.

Good morning 😁

No more 'golden tickets' for asylum seekers says Starmer.

People granted asylum will no longer be given “the golden ticket” of resettlement and family reunion rights, Keir Starmer said, amid deepening concerns from charities that his words are demonising refugees.

Mike Tapp speaking to Sky this morning eventually admits that Labour's plans for ILR (5 years to 10) will apply retrospectively to those already here and yet to reach ILR status.

Is Farage already PM? Seems like he is.

‘Retrospectively’ apparently that was the major difference for Labour supporters that made their policy ok

The asylum stuff, more Reform influenced stuff. Desperate.

Indeed.

Why is Reform's policy "racist", but Labour's isn't? I'm confused 🤔.

Erm, I think I know this....is it because...Labour supporters say so?

HostaCentral · 02/10/2025 10:14

We are a little bit older than some of you, in the late 50's early 60's bracket, but still supporting one DD, just finished at Uni. We also have an older DD, set up well in London, and self sufficient. Our friendship group all still have young adults we are supporting, but we have all retired! The juice was no longer worth the squeeze, so the saying goes. We are all living off pensions and cash, and hoping for the best.

It's not good for the economy though really, that all us youngish workers have checked out. We were all higher rate tax payers, and now are "uneconomic" units.

Younger DD is finding it hard to get a job, we are giving her a gap year to get sorted, but it's not easy even getting something in retail or hospitality is not easy. It's already very different from older DD, who graduated 7 years ago.

Interesting looking TRIM podcast this morning - it’s titled “Has Reeves been unlucky or unwise?”. I shall report back once I’ve listened!

Unsurprisingly TRIP seemed to think the Labour Conference went well, though Rory pointed out that it’s the weeks after that will set the tone. I will wait to see what Ed and George made of it all tomorrow.

I can't keep up with the pods at the moment, not enough hours in a day. Thanks for keeping us informed. Looking forward to your summary.

I am so politically homeless, in despair about who I could vote for.

Overall slightly left-of-centre but have no objection to private education/healthcare because I also strongly believe in individual freedom to spend your hard-earned-and-taxed money as you see fit. Socially generally very liberal but a sex-realist so recognises the importance of female single-sex spaces, and have nothing but contempt for the self-indulgent word-salad snowflakery of the Omnicause. Very much pro a safety net for the less fortunate in society but therefore recognise the vital importance of not strangling the economy nor vilifying those who pay the most tax. As an ethnic minority immigrant myself, broadly pro-immigration but it has to be controlled and fairly administered and not retrospectively changed; distraught by the emboldening of xenophobic rhetoric at all levels of British society.

@LeakyRad at this rate I think we should just set up our own bloody party! I’ve often said that the MN Party would be great - women across the country in all constituencies and a huge variety of experience in education, finance, healthcare, business etc. I’ll nominate JKR as Leader.

Yes I can completely understand how you feel politically homeless. It's extremes now isn't it so centralists have no natural home

We'd have to be careful about who we let in, I don't want anyone crying and shaking because someone knocked at the door of No.10.

I think many people feel politically homeless right now.
I agree with much of what you've written. I hope the conservative party spot the gap in the market for a sensible tory party, leaving Labour and Reform to fight like rats in a sack.

Can you imagine getting all dewy eyed and riled up with the conference speech then seeing Starmer declare no asylum headline to women and children two days after

I hope those Labour MPs blanche. Maybe they’ll remove him after all.

I'm the same age. I quit work at 62. I just couldn't do it anymore. I've lived off savings and a couple of cashed in pensions and a bit of husling since. I get my state pension in a few weeks.
Can I make a suggestion re your DD? Has she considered forklift driving? I know it's historically a man's job, however, according to my son, a forklift instructor, more women are taking it up. A lot of it is inside shuffling pallets about. It could be a lucrative stop gap to keep her going.

It’s really worrying re young people. So much going on politically Labour have lost sight of jobs. The basic stuff. They’re shouting slogans at Reform.

Hmm, I wonder how long until average workers will be paying HRT? People wonder why work doesn't pay.

Absentosaur · 02/10/2025 11:13

Reeves doesn’t seem bright enough to be an economist. Usually Economists are sharper than your average sharpened pencil. That she most definitely is not.

Perhaps that’s why she got stuck in the mortgage customer complaints section at HBOS, rather than being employed somewhere as ‘an economist’.

Sadly due to the fact she went into Labour Party politics, now the whole country is lumbered with her inadequate performances.

Rishi come back, please! I think Rishi and Kemi would be an awesome team. But he’d have to be CEx and her PM. He’s rich enough not to bother I suppose.

Son has already said if he's still in this country, which is very unlikely and his pay increases to take him into the next tax bracket, he will cut his hours or work for days in lieu to remain below the threshold.
On the same note how can it be acceptable that, in 2027, if you receive the new state pension and no other income, you must pay tax?
I hear Labour shouting loud 'oh it wasn't us miss! Those sneaky conservatives froze the tax thresholds.' I don't see them easing it though.
