Do you find it unreasonable if people smoke inside in front of non smokers?

Went to a friends engagement dinner last weekend, small gathering of close friends. Friend who owns the house does not smoke, half of the party were smokers. They asked if they should go outside to smoke and she said no it’s ok to smoke inside. Maybe it’s just me but it has been years since I have been somewhere where people are openly smoking indoors especially when people who are non smokers are there.

what do you think of this?

I think it’s strangely nostalgic 😂 I’m not a smoker but love the smell and think we’re uptight nowadays…. I mean for ver good reasons due to cancer but still!

NellieElephantine · 27/09/2025 21:56

What do I think? It's her house, if the non smokers don't want to be around the smokers they can move?

Fionasapples · 27/09/2025 21:57

I hate it. My bil smokes and if I visit, I go home with my clothes and hair stinking of smoke. Hard to believe people used to smoke everywhere and it wasn't unusual to have yellow ceilings!

Teado · 27/09/2025 21:58

I don’t mind the smell of smoke but I don’t really know anyone who smokes now, so can’t imagine this happening.

GlassofRosePorfavor · 27/09/2025 22:00

I prefer cigarette smoke to vape smoke

3beesinmybonnet · 27/09/2025 22:01

My DH has COPD and we would have to leave, we'd quietly explain why to the host.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 27/09/2025 22:01

🤢🤢absolutely vile.

PermanentTemporary · 27/09/2025 22:02

I’d hate it, tbh I would fake an illness and leave. Tbh I can’t remember the last time I saw someone smoke inside - yes I can! 2019 and it was horrible.

Pineconesandpetals · 27/09/2025 22:02

It’s her house, so she can do what she likes, but I agree it’s a bit….old school? I haven’t seen that in decades.

Cbamuch · 27/09/2025 22:08

Rude all round. Rude of her to subject her guests to it and rude of the smokers to do it. Vile behaviour. Haven't seen that for probably 20 years I imagine.

SliceofTosst · 27/09/2025 22:10

I smoke but wouldn't ever consider smoking inside my own home, let alone even think of doing it in others. Even if they said I could, I absolutely would not. I'd go own the far end of the garden.

LillyPJ · 27/09/2025 22:11

That's dreadful. I wouldn't expect smokers to even think of smoking inside nowadays apart from in their own home and I think it's inconsiderate of the host to say they could when there are non smokers there.

DoubleShotEspresso · 27/09/2025 22:11

This is very common amongst our circle of friends tbh. I would say a good 60% of our friends are smokers.
However if any non-smoker friends are hosting dinners, nobody would ask or expect to smoke inside, that seems really unfair to the host!.

Furgal · 27/09/2025 22:14

I have genetic lung problems. I'd be out if there like a shot. Most friends are not aware i have it though. I don't particularly want everyone to know. I can't believe she doesn't mind her home stinking.

How can you say there's good reasons 'due to cancer but still'? I think the risk of cancer is probably quite a good reason to be 'uptight' about people subjecting you to their smoke.

TiredofLDN · 27/09/2025 22:18

Ooooh that takes me back!

I do miss smoking. Had a twenty a day rollie habit pre-DC, and there was nothing quite like smoking at house parties, hanging/ shoving everyone out of the back door, and gradually whoever was hosting (usually me) succumbing to just turning the kitchen into a tap room….

that’s made me so nostalgic!

DonewhatIcando · 27/09/2025 22:18

I smoke, I don't smoke inside my house, ever.
What you've described has actually made me feel uneasy, I feel a bit disgusted tbh.
As a smoker guest I wouldn't have lit up at the party.
I'm very careful not to smoke around non smokers even when outdoors, I wouldn't want my 2nd hand smoke being inhaled by a non smokers.

LegoPicnic · 27/09/2025 22:22

I think it’s weird that a non-smoker would allow smoking in their house - I definitely wouldn’t and I don’t know any non-smokers that would. Actually most smokers I know don’t even smoke inside their own homes any more.

I don’t think it’s rude if the host is ok with it, but I really wouldn’t like it as a guest.

chattyness · 27/09/2025 22:26

It doesn't bother me I don't smoke , my DH does, but he would never smoke inside a non smokers home.

I was saying… we are uptight nowadays as we know there’s a risk of cancer whereas in the olden days when people smoked in doors we didn’t. But still means…. But people still do it despite knowing this.

StarDolphins · 27/09/2025 22:30

I don’t smoke but this wouldn’t bother me at all.

Same … once every never wouldn’t bother me and unlikely to do any harm! If I had an illness that meant I couldn’t be around smokers I would just quietly leave…

This! I quite enjoy it (and I’m a vehement non smoker). It feels like the bad old days

Yes 😂 the good old days! Im
also a non smoker but it takes me back to a happier time?! I’m often hovering outside at parties when my friends go and smoke still 😅

OhDear111 · 27/09/2025 22:36

@Tvhead I cannot remember the last time I saw anyone smoking inside. Not in a house for decades! The smokers should not have smoked if the majority didn’t. Of course they should have gone out regardless of what the host said. In all honesty, I would have made my excuses and left. Your clothes will know your have been around smokers! Yuk! Thank God I don’t know smokers!
