Chance of a general election next year and Reform winning?

1000 replies

Confused78 · 25/09/2025 21:50

They are winning in the polls it seems. I've been watching Nigel Farage's Instagram, he really just talks common sense. I find myself agreeing with a lot of what he says.
I'm definitely not far right and I'm not a leftie,
I think I'm somewhere in the middle.
But I am sick of Conservative and Labour and think it's time to give a new party a chance, especially if they are going to properly tackle illegal immigrants coming over and the ones that are already here.
I don't necessarily agree with his call to deport those with Indefinite leave to remain however.

If you think they’ve got real choice, you’re deeply misguided. Muslims are indoctrinated from birth about Islam. As many children from another religion are indoctrinated from birth. Muslims kids however have to study the Koran. They have no choice. So yes they get older they go to uni, they have ‘freedoms’ but make no mistake - the religion and culture of Shame, is everything.

So whilst you simplistically say, they have a choice to wear this or that, yes most often they do.

But it’s a choice within the realms of the fact they are Muslim. And that has expectations, most westerners do not understand.

You could say exactly the same of fundamentalist Christianity and Orthodox Judaism. It is utterly hypocritical to single out Islam for this kind of criticism.

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/10/2025 10:11

As far as I’m concerned, all religion is indoctrination.
I’m grateful to live in a country where people are free to express their beliefs, though.

On that we most definitely agree.

See all this religious talk is interesting because there are several left wing posters on MN who have stated that there should be no religious state funded schools ie Muslim/Jewish/Catholic.
Wouldn't this go against the religious and ethnic plurality that many on here are trying to maintain? If we ban state funded religious schools wouldn't this be a bad thing because some of these religions believe girls and boys should be educated separately and under HRA they have a right to be educated according to patents religious beliefs.

I haven't heard any right wing posters wanting to end faith schools.

Banning state funded religious schools would not be a problem for me as long as it applied to all faiths. I would love to see that happening. Fundamentalist religious parents of all faiths could home educate or go private. Religion should stay in the home and in churches/mosques/synagogues. Of course people should be free to preach on the streets, leaflet, knock on doors - that isn't state funded.

Ah so you believe in certain forms of discrimination? It's OK to force religious families to go against their beliefs and indeed the HRA re: education?

I did read your post. I just know too many Muslims to see it as anything other than one sided bollocks. Muslims are no more a monolithic block of belief than any other faith.

Oh get off your soap box @IWFH and @pointythings and stop your hysterical strawman frothing.

The UK has very little racism. The pp isn't racist. Your friend is perfectly safe to live her life.

People are allowed to have different opinions, and don't need to prove that their thoughts are pure and perfect to you.

If you're really worried about the rise of protest and dissent, then tell your Labour leaders to stop gas-lighting about 'Enemies' and 'Racists' because that's what is raising the political temperature: Labour's divisive, aggressive polemics.

Labour also need to actually do something about the illegal immigration and also excessive legal immigration, which are both reducing everyone's quality of life. If Mahmood manages to get her changes in and extends the time requiremrnt and adds conditions around integration, lack of criminal record, and being financially independent in order to get ILR before the Boris wave comes through, then Reform will undoubtedly backtrack on the removal of existing ILR. If Labour MPs continue to fight the slightest restrictions on immigration, then it's early notice that the UK won't be held to permanent consequences of their stupidity once they're out.

The HRA doesn't demand single sex provision. If a religious parent wants that, single sex schools are available. There is no requirement in law for the state to provide them, however. As I have said, home education or private provision is available and covers the requirements.

Religious discrimination in faith schools is a knotty problem. The Equality Act (which is the relevant legislation) sets it out well. But it also doesn't explicitly state that there is a right to state funded single sex education.

There aren't single sex state schools in many areas of UK though. HRA specifically says state can't interfere with parents right to educate their children according to religious or ethical beliefs.

Pointing out that racist behaviour is on the rise isn't 'hysterical frothing'. Telling people to just stop looking different is victim blaming. Do you also blame rape victims because of what they may have been wearing?

Immigration is substantially down this year...

But the UK allows home education.

And most parents don't feel equipped to do it.
Just interesting musings really about how 1 form of discrimination is (rightly) called out by the Left yet they actively call for other forms.

placemats · 02/10/2025 10:49

Reform have already backtracked on the ILR as it is no longer is applicable to European nationals. @strawberrybubblegum

Bumblebee72 · 02/10/2025 10:52

I feel with almost 100% confidence that there is no chance an general election next year. The Prime Minister has a strong majority, and MPs don't have no-confidence votes when they could loss their seats.

I think the next general election will be on the last day legally possible so the this Government will cling onto every second of power they can get.

The HRA doesn't require the government to provide faith schools and I'm not sure why you think it does. State-funded faith schools do not exist in the US or France - are they discriminating against people because of this? Of course not, if people want a religious education they send their children to a private school or home educate. Just as I would do if I wanted a Catholic or Jewish or Muslim education for my children, because the only faith schools in my area are CofE.

I think you’re right, but I wouldn’t rule it out completely…if the budget and accompanying rhetoric goes they way I think it will then there is going to be a lot of angry people. The Labour conference was just totally detached from reality, I can’t ever remember a Government being this out of touch.

Labour supporter touted by PM says she will never vote for party again

Earlier this week Sir Keir told his party's conference he twigged 'the Left had got it wrong on illegal immigration' when he visited the town of Oldham ten years ago and spoke to a pensioner.

Almost every single person in the country can be angry, the only people who have a say are the 400 Labour MPs, and they won't because self interest will take over national interest.

The only way I could see an earlier election would be a mass defection of MPs from Labour.

Absentosaur · 02/10/2025 11:35

So out of touch is he that Starmer referenced a conversation he had with a member of the electorate, 10years ago. What a bellend.

Farage’s has been banging on saying that immigrants are now eating swans, what worries me is that some people actually believe him.

There was a TV show about 10 years ago that follows police about in the UK. A family of Romanian immigrants had captured, cooked, and eaten a swan from the park.

Seen some folk on tiktok (often used to sway public opinion) with influencers shouting about how swans are delicious and why shouldn't we eat them.

I hate Reform and think they're racist. But it's not ridiculous to say that people from other cultures view things we view as abhorrent or weird, as perfectly routine.
