What do you think about proposed ID cards?

I am not sure what I think about proposed ID cards?
does the UK public want it?
how much it is going to cost to bring them in?
what are the positives and negatives?

I am in two minds. Years ago I was against them for many of the privacy and data security reasons given by others. However any future authoritarian government could just introduce and make id cards mandatory anyway if they got into power. In reality the phone, internet and social media explosion means that in practice everyone and anyone already has our data and can track us. Passports are pretty secure in terms of forgery so as long as employers had the right equipment or databases to refer to I don't see that id cards should be any different. It may well therefore make it harder for anyone not entitled to work to do so which might quieten those currently being stirred up into a frenzy about migration. Not sure yet waiting to see more detail.

Clearly people can’t see it yet but I believe we have one of those right now. I wouldn’t be that shocked if we don’t even see another election. A forever government may be coming our way.

We’ve been having elections for centuries. The idea that the introduction of an ID card might stop all that and herald a dictatorship is a stretch too far.

If the public wants services that are free at point of use, like the NHS, GPs,…ID that is simple to check and impossible to forge would help ensure only those entitled to the service free of charge could access it for free. It could also replace the E111 / GHIC that entitles British citizens to care within the EU.

It would make life harder for people living in the UK illegally, which I would have expected reform supporters to like.

Anyone who has a biometric passport already has a biometric ID. An ID card could be made using the data the passport office already holds.

Agree completely.

I pretty much agree with all that @PrivacyDystopia has said and I am totally opposed to Reform and cannot abide Farage. So being anti-ID and pro-Reform don't necessarily go hand in hand. In fact I'm running out of political parties to support. Currently support Advance UK but very unkeen on any of the others.

So you support the ultra far right?

I’m not saying that the ID cards create a dictatorship… I’m saying it’s a dictatorship that brings in ID cards!

Blair institute says:

Imagine being pre-approved and notified about the services, benefits or tax breaks you’re entitled to, no more lengthy forms, no waiting, no more backdating. Issues in your community reported at a tap and tracking progress on those reports with complete transparency. A new generation of public services built on fairness, control and convenience – personalised, preventative, always on.

Yes they are encouraging digital ID so they can pay claimants more money - hilariously naive if people believe this nonsense.

They will be flogging data to every tech business that knocks on Number 10s door!

Maybe we could also vote on every matter via the App - so the politicians always act on our behalf 😂

The ‘always on’ ability to inform on your neighbours with the tap of a button though… that bit is deadly accurate. Is this why it appeals so much to the mumsnet stasi?!

Not read the whole thread , but are they going to charge for these cards? If so many won’t bother when you already have a passport and drivers licence.

I imagine that’s why it’s digital so it should be free as it’s mandatory. There will be no costs in printing, manufacturing or postage.
Tech is much better than it was 20 years ago with Face and fingerprint access.

Mandatory biometrics. How keen you are.

Abhannmor · 26/09/2025 13:49

Used to be strongly opposed years ago. But , seeing as you can't fart without showing a driver's license or passport and your smartphone shows your exact location, I'd be a bit more relaxed about it now on the .

It should make it a bit harder for dodgy firms to hire cheap labour , illegal immigrants etc . So you'd expect it to have broad support. But.....on the other hand there will be opposition from the conspiracy/ secret Illuminati world government believers?

BurntBroccoli · 26/09/2025 13:52

Crikeyalmighty · 26/09/2025 11:18

I have no issue , we had them in Denmark - someone on a friends post objected today because it would ‘out’ trans people - now I’m a liberal person but I think we can’t run the country around what a very small select group of people think and this person is a bit deluded if they think ‘we don’t know’ -for those of us who don’t drive it can be handy for ID - we don’t all walk round with passports and can be very handy if having a car accident and exchanging details - for most people in reality I can’t see the difference between having it and carrying round your driving license and think it’s lot of fuss over nothing - it’s common virtually everywhere in Europe. Tradesmen doing a job- ask to see it etc - stops people hiding behind false identities which contrary to what the public think is pretty common -

I think the ability to ask tradesmen for their ID will be very beneficial. It should stop many cowboy builders (who often change their name to avoid detection).

OhDear111 · 26/09/2025 13:52

The government know a lot about us already and those of us with passports already use the technology in them. Don’t get the fuss and we should be like every other sensible nation and have them. Eligibility will be interesting.

StillCreatingAName · 26/09/2025 08:22

There’s already no allowance for those who may struggle to use apps- for whatever reason- the expectation that everyone has parking apps, access to £credit, etc.
M&S was hacked, as a result you couldn’t order a nice top for a few weeks, now imagine a world where you can’t prove who you are if the system is hacked? You can’t prove who you are if you’ve not got your smartphone on you (the id will be an app) and you can be arrested and profiled based on opinions you have on forums such as MN. This already happens for commercial reasons, WhatsApp and social media is the template for this, but imagine living in a world where it happened because your government demanded it 😞

Well we are the ones who elect the government at any given point in time, so people need to bear that in mind, don't they?

Yep the conspiracy theories are rolling in on this thread and on Reddit!

The ID cards will be a deterrent if irregular migrants know they will not be able to work while waiting for the Home Office to process their claims.
Visa overstayers will find it hard to gain employment and will voluntarily return.

peanutbuttertoasty · 26/09/2025 13:57

Like lambs to the bloody slaughter you lot… I despair. The apathy about your human rights and freedoms beggars belief. I guess we got the government we collectively deserved. Bangs head on wall…

Summertoautumnovernight · 26/09/2025 13:59

My gut feeling is that this is 100% about increasing tax take - as it’s targeting illegal working apparently ( I’m not sure how - to be honest as people will still work for cash without showing their id ) - watching with curiosity to see what happens

Most countries in the EU have had ID cards for decades and are far from being dictatorships. Why would it be any different here?

I read that Canada did the following in the last five years

Blocked Bank accounts of citizens who wouldn't have the COVID jabs

Blocked Bank accounts of farmers who protested against the government

Blocked people from going into their own forests this summer threatening huge fines.

An we have links and background info for those?

Palantir. And because we have an authoritarian socialist government. What they can do now could not be done decades ago. I do not trust those governments either. No government should have this much power of invasive control.

Germany has had digital ID cards since 2010. Palantir operates there too. Democracy hasn’t collapsed there yet.

It’s fair to be wary of technology and ID systems but I think the key here is to worry about safeguards and oversight, not the ID cards themselves.
