I am not sure what I think about proposed ID cards?
does the UK public want it?
how much it is going to cost to bring them in?
what are the positives and negatives?

Where I live in Wales you cannot get work until you have an NI number. School can block a student working even then if student education is suffering. The only exception being working for family.

Waiting for the posts about hysteria and how I will take my teenagers to be microchipped so they are safe. The cover is coming off now, this is about being tracked/monitored and once it's normalised and our children are used to it there will be no repealing it or opt out for us. We knew it was never about immigration.

Surely ID cards are to confirm a person's ID and their eligibility for services, etc.?

You would need to read the T&C's. The card is whatever the Govt wants it to be and sets the parameters for.

An MP is now going on about how it should be used for ID in pubs.

The LDs were close to dropping their opposition to the idea as they've previously been against ID cards, but I think this will probably force a rethink.

If I'm honest, and especially Farages complete opposition to the idea and declaration that he will refuse to gave one (as well as a online petition with a couple of million signatures) my gut feeling is this idea is liable to end up being one of those ideas that goes badly wrong for Starmer.

Starmer will cling to it but opposition from the public is likely to grow rather than the public be reassured. The idea was supposed to appeal to those wavering between Reform and Labour - it's hitting the wrong notes on freedoms though.

The next election is likely 2029. That gives Starmer four and a half years to consult, pass through parliament, recruit competent staff for such a massive project, write project, test project, implement database, educate the public on how to use, manufacture and roll out. Not happening

It's a ten year project. That means it's going to be an election issue and that's where Starmer's really going to come unstuck and wish he'd not launched the idea especially with this mission creep, possibly of spiralling costs and likely growing opposition from the public. It'll be a chain around his neck at the election.

That to me says this is unlikely to come to pass in the end, but a lot of money will probably be spunked on it, before the concept ultimately dies a death for another couple of decades.

We shall see.

Digital ID for 13-16
No mobile phones in school.

Which one?

ChubbyPuffling · 11/10/2025 07:37

Mission creep is great if you don't want digital ID. The project becomes too big, takes too long, then gets shelved as unfit for purpose... the original purpose gets lost and forgotten.
The way to get the project done is to stick to the original vision. Minimum viable product.
Quick, "easy", or uncomplicated at least. Deliver, get people used to it and then start the creep... everyone can "I told you so", but by then it exists and everyone has bought in.

We have them in the country where i live. Cant do anything without it - open a bank account, take a train, buy a coach ticket, buy a SIM card. I actually always marvel about how difficult it would be to commit a crime (or at least get away with it!) in this company due to these ID cards!

But is it digital? That makes a big difference. Think of the hacking risk? I’ve had my personal data hacked from large established commercial organisations 4 times of late.

Why would anyone need a passport and an ID card?

The USA exists without ID cards too.

I reckon Google knows my every move these days so I have no concerns about a government issued proof of ID. Your passport and driving licence are de facto ID anyway.
