Labour isn't working - Thread 10

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

What’s going on?

Curious and curiouser.

Burnham's buses are going to have another set of strikes.
Just think how many strikes he could reign over if he was prime minister.

I am not fond of him. His CAZ signage nonsense has blighted the landscape locally for years. It's made someone rich.

Upstartled · 28/09/2025 12:20

Bernstein and Woodward have nothing on us.

Ah, some sort of auto-delete for dodgy Labour-inclined websites! Better late than never.

(Joking: I imagine the software acts on trigger words like ‘tax’ in case it’s spam, phishing etc.)

upseedaisee · 28/09/2025 12:22

My son has just summed up Starmer to perfection.

He's a two time tax dodger who couldn't even pay his Ukranian rent boys. Rachel Reeves could probably handle his affairs better.🤣🤣🤣

Ikr! My dd's school buses are impacted by those strikes.
The cost to the taxpayer of removing those stupid CAZ signs they slapped all over the region? £600K!
Burnham for PM? What a joke.

Out of idle curiosity, what is the difference?

I'm not a lawyer, so can only speak from my family's experience of trusts. The difference, I think, is a life interest is created when someone is gifted use of something (usually property or land) until their death, at which point the benefit ends.

A life interest trust follows the rules set out by the settlor and is administered by trustees.

(Correction of my understanding by any lawyers here would be much appreciated.)

Pearlyjam · 28/09/2025 12:41

I saw this comment to an article in the Mail and just had to share:

''If Starmer was truthful... "I am a narcissist. I am an abuser who is absent of a soul or conscious. I live a parasitical lifestyle, and need to suck out your amazing energy to survive, while infusing you with my toxic energy. My goal is to destroy your life and spirit. When you are at your worst, when I filled your life with pain, sorrow and despair, I am at my best. This is a game to me. I want to see how long I can deceive you before you figure out who and what I am."

Thanks for the info - was abroad so must seen this on this thread and signed.

The bbc said it was the third highest petition ever last night when it just went over the 2million mark
It’s now at 2.2million (12:30). and I’m watching it go up at a really fast rate atm.

[now gone up another 5,000 whilst I looked up some stats]

This equates to currently 1 in 10 of the electorate based on
the % who turn out to vote (65%) and
the % who feel they don’t have a say (63%) so less likely to bother voting

Safe to say then a high % of the population if it’s between 1/10 and @Upstartled s figure of 1/25

I’m not a generous as upstartled 😁

Re the question before about voting Labour or reform.

I'm Australian. I was a member of the Labor party in Australia fior years. I canvassed for them. When I first arrived in the UK I voted Labour. Then I gradually came to realise the diabolical harm they do to every economy they ever become involved with. When Corbyn became leader I swore to never vote for them again. I did not like what I saw. Voted Tory ever since. But they have been such a disappointment.

Last week I found myself reading Reform policies with the view toi perhaps making a change. But the announcement that they will rescind the visas of people who hold Indefinite Leave to Remain- as I do - has filled me with alarm and horror. More than 20 years in this country as a legal migrant. British husband, British children. To be told that we are not welcome here unless we can fulfil a whole new set of quite arbitrary requirements, or we are out. No way.

Still- we are leaving anyway. Within the next 3 years at the outside. And my heart is truly broken that we are leaving a country I love so much due to the quite unbelievable shit that our politicians - of all stripes- are chucking at it. The destruction of this once great nation seems inevitable to me now and I feel so hurt and damaged by that- as i know does everyone on the thread.

But if we were here I'd probably vote Tory again. Even though that won't do much good.

EasternStandard · 28/09/2025 13:06

This is really sad. Starmer’s ‘one in one out’ scheme so far has made people more desperate, another death today in the channel, a child this time.

Chucking you out would be in contravention of your ‘right to family life’
Reform really aren’t thinking it through

JustStopItNorasaurus · 28/09/2025 13:19

yes indeed, that is a bright spot, currently. But it would just take a removal of certain parts of the Human Rights act- and that can be overturned by parliament, surely. Depends on how big a majority they would have.

TheNuthatch · 28/09/2025 13:20

@JustStopItNorasaurus I really hope things work out for you in the long run. Fwiw, I think Reform have got it totally wrong with that announcement on ILR. I hoping to see some rolling back on that.

@EasternStandard That's awful 😪. I read something yesterday saying the camps are busier than ever with people desperate to get to the UK. Are the French police still tear gassing them and slashing boats?

I know you feel strongly and I completely understand that, would you not want to move to citizenship if you do love it here?

I’m not sure on that, I have a feeling it was a desperate attempt which they’ve since realised is a failure. Latest seems to be the French not doing much. I don’t blame them tbh who wants to tear gas people on beaches?

We don’t do it and it’s our border they are effectively monitoring by proxy. They shouldn’t have to use force.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 28/09/2025 13:27

I never took citizenship for deeply personal reasons. They are multi fold, but one of the reasons was around the fact I gave up my country, my name, my career, my extended family to marry DH and move here. Becoming a citizen kind of felt like the last rejection of my background. It's visceral, not logical I know. Plus, with IDLR I had permanent settled status forever and a day so there was no objective 'need' to become a citizen.

Now, there would be a need. But I feel angry that the subject is even up for discussion with reform. I have already jumped through all the hoops asked of me and paid all the costs expected of me. To have the rules change retrospectively? That simply does not seem 'fair'. But I am luckier because at least Australia ALLOWS dual citizenship. Alot of countries don't.

Ik I have both but it was Labour and reading on mn the general political inevitability that made me get my stuff into gear and get the Aus one for everyone in the family, as back up after about twenty years. I know how emotional and personal it is, I cried when I got the you are now citizen letter.

I really do get those types of emotions absolutely although I’m in a lock me down for the most secure type of citizenship where I can mode.

ps cried in a good way. It meant a lot.
