Christmas decor you just don't like?

It's obviously all down to* *personal taste but..... which items of Christmas decor leave you feeling colder than the weather outside?
For me it's the Disney baubles/figurine things that hang on the tree! Putting a little red hat on Bambi doesn't make him festive, even worse when it's the whole collection and it looks like something that belongs in a nursery!
Thinking about it most Disney films seem to be set in the summer so maybe that's why they seem so wrong on a Christmas tree🤔
I did go through a phase of everything being silver/black and white (should give the Disney lovers something to cringe at on my behalf! ) but over the last few years I have added a bit more colour, obviously in a very tasteful almost still neutral way...
This thread is hopefully lighthearted, I am taking the piss out of myself and do not feel I need hate mail from the 'Disney Christmas Decoration Foundation'🤣

@LillyPJ agreed, no fake tree however expensive lives up to the look of a real tree.
Unfortunately the smell of a real Christmas tree gives me a migraine (even the ones that aren’t supposed to have a smell etc) so we have to stick to a fake one.

That's a shame! I especially love the smell of a real tree.

Anything very stylised- like op chat (sorry op) i love a vintage thrown together, multi coloured light, home made bauble tree & despise “planned looks” - to each their own

Christmas versions of household items - Mince pie patterned dustpan and brush, snowflake chopping board, elf washing up brush, kitten in Santa hat cushions, holly door mats or this toaster!

Either you have to store it all somewhere all year or it's Christmas every time you go in your kitchen.

Edited

I hear you, but I don’t have the Love M&S Xmas floor cleaner

White or black Christmas trees.
Lights in non Christmassy colours eg blue.
Inflatable outdoor decorations. They are tacky and look terrible in bad weather.
Decorations going up before mid November at the very earliest.
Those sad looking big trees you often see in town centres that are literally just a tree that looks like a meagre set of lights have been thrown on. They make me sad. Either don’t bother with a town tree or make a bloody effort. I love to see a town centre with good decorations.
Not a decoration but I hate to see a crappy Santa- skinny, stick on beard, poor quality costume.

PassOnThat · 25/09/2025 06:51

Real trees. Never had one that didn't drop its needles well before Christmas day.

Any decorations up before December. They always make me feel slightly panicked. It would be nice to enjoy autumn before the Christmas rush starts.

@TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis that's strong language there "violates our travel fridge magnets"

I'm a fairly chill person, but violate my fridge magnets at your peril 😂

It affects my asthma.

A couple of late relatives had real trees. I sat the furthest away from the tree. They had large lounges.

Yet I go to Christmas tree festivals in a few local churches which use a mix of real and artificial trees and not affected by the real trees. Probably a combination of high ceilings and doors that are constantly being opened helps.

Santas with spectacles - for some reason, these annoy me irrationally (and I'm a glasses wearer). I don't like the concept of Santa anyway, especially the "be good or Santa won't come" rhetoric.

As others have said:
Blue lights to rival the emergency services.
"Santa stop here" signs.
Candy canes.
Nutcrackers. I have some sympathy for Fritz getting his bottom smacked when he breaks the nutcracker.

Sometimes I think Scrooge was misunderstood - Bah humbug.

Carefully colour-coordinated tree decorations. For me the joy of a Christmas tree is that it’s a mish-mash of random decorations collected over the years, some homemade by kids, some inherited, some a memento of a special place or event, just bung it all on the tree and have a lovely Christmas.

My parents dig out the table decoration I made at Brownies aged 7 - coming out for its 38th Christmas. It’s had the bits of tinsel changed twice and the candle (never lit) 3 times. It’s still the same decoration. It’s the Trigger’s broom in the Christmas world

I'm epileptic so all the flashing lights that I can't escape from! 🙁

Oh my dc love their Christmas pjs and bedding! And I don't mind because it's in their own rooms! We've actually let them each have their own little tree in their rooms some years so they can each decorate it according to their own dreadful taste, and they love being tucked up in there with their Christmas bedding and garish coloured tree lights. It's fun for them.

Ah that sounds really cosy! Love the idea of little trees for DC to decorate as they like.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 25/09/2025 11:20

I'm quite laissez faire about decorations, so I don't care what other people do in their homes, but I'm afraid I get a bit narrow eyed about those 'front doors decorated to look like a parcel' - with ribbon all round the door and a big bow on. Several of my friends are posties and I know how awful these doors are to get post through! Besides they just look too... try hard, maybe?

Other than that, while my own Christmas decor is tasteful and minimal (ha!), I don't mind what others do. All adds to the fun!

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 25/09/2025 11:27

Half of my Christmas tree is Disney based. I have baubles that I have collected over the years whilst in Orlando with the years on them. Sadly one of my favourite ones. A big glass bauble with snow inside it and eyore sitting on the top slipped off the tree as I was hanging it one year and smashed into pieces. I also have a Mickey and Minnie and a Winnie the Pooh bears that sit around my Xmas tree or in front of the tv stand. They used to play music but no longer work now

Completely agree about no decorations before December. People seem to decorate earlier and earlier each year.
I only put my tree up about a week before Christmas and have never had needle drop since I started buying nordman fir trees.

On a similar topic, there is a house on the way to my parents that has Halloween decorations up for a fortnight!

Tinsel and tacky door ornamentation like those hideous massive bows. Bet post people are thrilled when they come out.

Nevertooearlyforsanta · 25/09/2025 14:26

I am traditional in the sense I have no theme. It’s a bit of a colour fest, mainly traditional red, green, gold, but there is silver in there, some purple. Over the years I’ve moved away from the traditional baubles, to things I really like but I have a finger of taste, traditional, Santa etc, Star Wars, Xmas jumper, sleigh, ballerina…it’s an eclectic tree. Also colourful lights. The more the better!

I only have my tree up for two weeks at most so they are fine.

Well they're not fine if they've been sawn off at the base though!

I rent a Christmas tree every year, it's potted and goes back to live on the farm afterwards

What the actual F is a gonk? How is it Christmast? I feel like it's just appeared over the last few years.

I was just coming to say Gonks, I don't like them at all!

mamagogo1 · 25/09/2025 16:52

Most of it, I’m fairly minimalist in my Christmas taste - nice tree, warm white lights in various places and some evergreen garlands

MousseMousse · 25/09/2025 16:54

This isn't a decoration at all but I have a strong dislike of all things 'Santa Claus'. Excuse me, but this is Britain - it's Father Christmas.

AbbeyGrange · 25/09/2025 16:55

Christmas tree decorations that are not remotely Christmassy such as a pizza slice, fried egg, hot dogs etc, I mean why?
