Christmas decor you just don't like?

It's obviously all down to* *personal taste but..... which items of Christmas decor leave you feeling colder than the weather outside?
For me it's the Disney baubles/figurine things that hang on the tree! Putting a little red hat on Bambi doesn't make him festive, even worse when it's the whole collection and it looks like something that belongs in a nursery!
Thinking about it most Disney films seem to be set in the summer so maybe that's why they seem so wrong on a Christmas tree🤔
I did go through a phase of everything being silver/black and white (should give the Disney lovers something to cringe at on my behalf! ) but over the last few years I have added a bit more colour, obviously in a very tasteful almost still neutral way...
This thread is hopefully lighthearted, I am taking the piss out of myself and do not feel I need hate mail from the 'Disney Christmas Decoration Foundation'🤣

My friend once bought a grey Christmas tree when the UK was at peak grey. She said it was silver but it wasn’t shiny so it was grey. GREY. With all the tree decorations matching and from two big boxes of navy and white and silver baubles. Probably all in landfill now.

I love to see how colour trends change. Going by my last trip to Next, sage green is slowly dying and terracotta is sneaking back. Christmas needs to stay red, green and gold for sustainability reasons!

I’ve just added a couple of terracotta cushions to my sage green living room 🤣

Conniebygaslight · 24/09/2025 06:38

Flashing Christmas lights are the devil’s work. Ours lights are always on a timer and when they come on the go crazy, so if I’m not home to press the button 6 times to go through the system to get them back to static they go bang bang in the window for hours. I really hate that.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 24/09/2025 07:02

I’m surprised by the amount of people that see advent calendars and elf on the shelf as decorations.

Tinsel has a vile smell like nothing else on earth, If I was blindfolded in July and someone wafted that stuff near me, I’d know immediately what is was! Strange feel to it, too. Why is it still around?
We are not allowed it in our works decorations “ in case someone swallows it” What???
Have they smelt it?

Why would someone eat tinsel?

Bobbieiris · 24/09/2025 07:05

I don’t personally like anything too neat or matching….i like anything a bit naff lol. Colourful lights and tinsel on the tree with lots of colourful baubles. Last year I went a bit too OTT with lametta though but my baby’s were tiny then and loved looking at all the sparkles.
also love colourful paper chains and foil decs.

It’s this, I guess you could describe it as spaghetti timsel!

Our hoover in the 80s was permanently wrapped with the stuff!

WhiteRosesAndThistles · 24/09/2025 07:26

I am happy to admit to my decorative faux pa's as follows:

I love tinsel (a tree without it is naked I tell you! )
I have gonks...
I have multiple nutcrackers...
My tree is a bit matchy but not as bad as it was!

To the few posters that jumped on a lighthearted thread to tell me off for being judgmental...being judgmental is for life, not just for Christmas 😉

Candy Canes , what even is the point of them

From all I’ve seen of a Swedish friend’s decorations, they’re all red and white - no green at all. Personally I think green is essential.

The tree?

Oh god these remind me of a picture I drew in primary school when we were studying the plague in London, ‘bring out your dead’ they used to put a Red Cross on the door of infected houses.

I came on to say almost exactly the same thing! I think the red bows look like the house has been marked as diseased! On a similar note, wreaths remind me of remembrance day and funerals so Xmas door wreaths feel a bit 'deathy' to me. Sadly MIL made us a reusable one a couple of years ago- she spent ages making one for us and one for her and was very proud of her efforts so it had to go on the door. I fear it may have been 'mislaid' this year!

JFDIYOLO · 24/09/2025 08:23

Ohhhh yes those nutcracker soldiers with the teeth ... 😬

My OH and I both love a Hallmark Christmas movie - like me he is also a big fan of The Holiday and Die Hard (yes, they are also CMs...) and it's always funny to see the aircraft hangar load of decorations that gets topped over some defenceless Canadian snow town for each film - but those damn giant nutcrackers are always leering round some corner at the heroine!

crazeekat · 24/09/2025 08:36

With the gonks. Absolute tat.

I've realised I'm possibly a tasteless baggage when it comes to Christmas decorations reading this thread. But I don't like over stuffed trees, especially involving feathers (don't like feathers in any situation)
My biggest annoyance is trees up in november but down on boxing day.

I always think those are the people who are secretly deriving pride from being "more organised than everyone else." Basically tree up, tree down at the first possible moments.

Okay, okay, we are all unanimous about one thing. Blue lights. If we are united in our loathing, how come so many people have them, and who is it?

Own up. I know you're out there.😂😂

I was just going to post the same. Who likes them?

I have to confess I am a warm fairy lights person, but I do let the dc have their own tree with "fun" 🙄coloured lights.

DMCWelshcakes · 24/09/2025 09:29

I can make my peace with actual Scandinavian Nisse and Tomten, but the crappy Asda knock off versions are not my thing. (And someone in Asda management needs to have a word with themselves about the intensity of their gnome obsession. )

I always thought that blue and cold white lights were for Hanukah rather than Christmas too.

I bloody love Christmas though and my house generally looks like several dlves on coke have been let loose in it. We have baubles from all over the world on the tree which we've collected over many years. I lose Poncetastic Christmas points for it being a fake tree though - I'm allergic to real ones, which makes the festive season a bit difficult. 🙄

SignatureShortdeads · 24/09/2025 09:38

Apologies if it’s already been mentioned, but Next have a Christmas tree where the whole top section is a gong and it has honk feet. It is ghastly.

Oh that might explain it. And then people saw them and thought "well that's obviously a new Christmas trend, I'll give them a try."

It's not my taste, but I think it's quite whimsical.

It does look quite nice but the design team* *have gone to great lengths to make it 'match' the home's decoration in the picture! Even the wrapping paper coordinates beautifully.
I imagine it would look much tackier in my house as it simply wouldn't blend appropriately.

Did someone upthread really say they spent over £150 on Advent Calendars???

I buy one with pictures in and family take turns opening it. Each to their own but...blimey!

I usually try not to be rude about my SIL because I hate the sound of all the bickering that goes on with ILs on these threads, but I cannot resist remarking at this point that my SIL - who genuinely has many good qualities - likes the gifts to be delivered sufficiently ahead of Christmas Day so that she can re-wrap them to match her decorating theme for the year!

I'm never organised enough, so have resorted to asking what wrap she is using so I can do it when I get round to it.

My partner has bought me a beauty advent calendar the last few years, and it’s bloody lovely. They’ve ranged in price - but I know the Harrods one was crazy money.

it’s such a nice treat, so whilst it’s completely un necessary, it’s very much appreciated and very well received.
