A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

The other thing is it’s digital ID not just a card which earlier users of ID might have had, what data is accessible and what powers. Bank accounts? SM?

Never thought about it. What’s the harm?

That asking people to do the unnecessary to prove that they are a good egg is asking them to show compliance for sport.

So, and a it creeps me out to use Foucault to make a point but he has good points to make, it's a mechanism by which we are creating a social panopticon where the assumption that we are being monitored - or always potentially monitored and how that changes who we are and our place in the world.

Hmm.. we are all in a panopticon now. No doubt. The proper freedom days are gone. We’re now reliant on smart phones (particularly) but of course other tech everywhere.

There was a murder case where they used the activity / health data on the suspects phone to catch him out. His location was not in question (from the phone and also his own admission). He said he’d been asleep throughout. But his phone showed vigorous activity for a length of time during which the murder was thought to take place. 🤷‍♀️

We could all go back to our 90’s Nokias.. But actually, could we?

Love the mention of Foucault, I studied him years ago and can’t recall much. I also just re read 1984 which I thought pretty useful.

The issue with ID cards is the surrounding rules.

We all have to prove who we are in many ways, whether to law enforcement, banks, the courts, social security, for passport and other travel permits, parentage etc etc. But that’s a process that’s in our hands.

The difficulty with ID cards is that they’re useless for their stated purpose unless it’s an offence not to carry one, so it has to be produced on request. At the moment you can be required to attend a police station within x days with a driving licence or whatever. An ID card could see you arrested on the spot if it’s not with you.

Rivalled · 18/09/2025 13:12

The rest is money isn’t terribly optimistic - the AI deal and riding on US coat tails is the best we can do as the tech is too advanced for us to catch up…

interesting arguments saying wages don’t grow as people are scared to move jobs due to low unemployment benefit - I’d have thought pensions and stamp duty also a barrier to that but not as much of a factor for those in their 20s etc.

Watching on Sky News. Starmer just parrots his script, let's see what happens if Trump veers from it.

twistyizzy · 18/09/2025 13:25

Major difference from last visit ie Starmer hiding behind a huge desk with a script. To try and detract from his lack of humanity. He is Trumps fan boy blowing smoke up his ass

Re the data kept on people. Tim Berners-Lee talked in the Leading interview about us all having our health data digitally and having the ability (via choice) to opt to share it with anyone carrying out clinical trials or disease research.

There was a piece on the BBC yesterday about an AI that has been trained on 400,000 anonymous NHS patient records, and then with records from Denmark, and can now predict the likelihood of a person developing certain diseases like Type 2 diabetes over the next decade.

I agree we need to be careful about the privacy issues, but there is so much potential.

I certainly agree with that. AI use of anonymised data could change the world radically for the better.

The point being - it is never truly anonymous. 🤷‍♀️

Upstartled · 18/09/2025 13:36

It's terrifying, isn't it? There's no charge, there's no crime, just a demand to apologise or you are off for an interview at the station. The process is the punishment. This isn't policing by consent.

Upstartled · 18/09/2025 13:38

I bet he didn't know what hit him though. How many other doors has he been knocking on before he found someone willing to film and challenge his behaviour and abuse of power?

Absentosaur · 18/09/2025 13:32

It is really. As a data point in a national collection of figures about, say, breast cancer, there isn’t any traceable identity. Similarly, in a different field, data within a vast data set about how a burglar broke into your house and what was stolen does could not identify you, absent special detail, which would be removed.

The way anonymity of data works means that nobody armed with other information could identify you.

We’re all used to this. If the National Gallery or Avanti West Coast or Mumsnet say they had x visitors or users we don’t feel identified.

I missed that bit. Hoping to watch the press conference.

Base rate held at 4%. Real economists at the bank of England are saying the threat of tax raids are hurting the economy.

Oh that sounds good, if it is really anonymous..! I suppose I’ll never be convinced. The info / data has to come from somewhere. It starts somewhere. How is that ‘forgotten’?

The policeman probably thought it was ridiculous too? At least I hope he did..

CaveMum · 18/09/2025 15:18

To be fair to Starmer, he is getting all the points in about Russia, Israel/Gaza, NATO etc before Trump has a chance to trash it all.

It's certainly a better performance than Trump's last visit. But there again it would be practically impossible for it to be worse. Starmer's PR team have obviously teed him up a lot better this time around.

Donald Trump: “We don’t do wind because it’s a disaster. It’s a very expensive joke…

You have great assets [in the North Sea] that I believe you’ve got to start using under this Prime Minister”

[No reaction from Keir Starmer]

I wonder how long it'll be before an offended lurker triggers a visit by the police to an MN poster in their own home?
