A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I also think the Resolution Foundation need to put down their copies of Logans Run, it's not a bloody manifesto.

🤣🤣🤣

upseedaisee · 18/09/2025 09:04

Honestly, I feel like that's where we're heading. Bashing the pensioners yet again. What they want is for the responsible in society to pay tax, pay into a pension and then die aged 65 so they don't have to pay the state pension and tax our private pensions left to family out the wazzoo. Or even better to take private pension pots altogether when you die.

Probably a controversial opinion, but I do think that ID cards would go a long way to fixing the illegal immigration problem.

One of the reasons we are such a target is because, unlike most of Europe, we don’t have them.

For those that say it would be an infringement of their civil liberties, I’m afraid your smart phone already tracks you, your loyalty cards already track what you buy, not to mention your internet use being constantly monitored via cookies, etc.

EasternStandard · 18/09/2025 09:16

It is true I’m not for digital ID, I dread it tbh. I know others will feel differently. I’d rather use a different system to keep more freedoms here.

Thing is, if ID cards, digital or otherwise were introduced, they would be mandatory, thereby taking away choice. At the moment, we can choose to allow ouselves to be tracked via our online presence or not. It's easy enough to pare back your digital footprint to just have a soft presence online.

I take your point.

But casino gambling - a great deal of which is online these days of course - is very different to sports betting, principally horse racing. Betting is central to racing. It’s what the whole industry was founded on.

And racing is significant. It’s a big employer. It offers much-loved national events. Jockeys, and the occasional horse, become famous. It’s one of the biggest sports in the UK and Ireland. It’s very different to roulette wheels, card games and slot machines.

All I’m saying is that taxation should differentiate between a useless (and financially very dangerous) activity like gaming, and a very different and much less dangerous form of gambling like horse race betting, which would inflict damage on the sport if taxed more heavily. (Other sports like football couldn’t care less: their income and structure isn’t reliant on betting.)

To be clear, I was and am against VAT on education. But it’s not the only sector that deserves protection from this rapacious, incompetent government. Plus, the government should be cutting public spending.

I take your point Denizen but you’re talking to someone whose particularly against gambling that involves animals

Sure. But that’s an objection separate to tax.

We wouldn’t agree on it, but of course I respect the view.

Don’t know if already posted as thread moving so fast but Next boss blames Labour for “anaemic economic growth” and falling employment.

I hadn't seen that. I think we'll see more and more of that as the year goes on. That Iceland boss Richard Walker has gone a bit quiet, hasn't he?

Rivalled · 18/09/2025 09:40

I’d be for ID cards but only if it came with a package of improved protections for free speech - we’ve really dropped the ball that people don’t share their views in their real names for fear of being sacked. And although you can turn off tracking, it’s piecemeal, and very many of us click the wrong button or forget one app and that’s it, they’ve got a tonne of data.

but surely - all these many failed important returns are showing us our legal system is the root of the issue here? Neither Rishi nor Keir has had any luck.

Upstartled · 18/09/2025 09:43

I don't think there's any evidence that I.D cards would work. It'd just be another thing that compliant people did that was ignored without consequence by the crooked.

upseedaisee · 18/09/2025 09:45

"but surely - all these many failed important returns are showing us our legal system is the root of the issue here? Neither Rishi nor Keir has had any luck."

This. Various laws and adjustments over the years have made it far too easy for Human rights lawyers (looking at you, Starmer) to pick holes and interpret at will what should really be clearcut.
The whole asylum system needs overhauling and scrapping and started again.

Plantatreetoday · 18/09/2025 09:46

Itcantbetrue · 18/09/2025 07:04

Does anyone care in the least what mamood says re fighting the lawyers re deportations.

Absotutly pointless time wasting.
They need to change the law.

Agree. Changing the law is the only way.
The question should be whether they came in illegally ie without visas.
Not why they came in so there should be no appeal on that fact if it’s clear entry was illegal
This is why the Conservatives had empty planes aswell

Upstartled · 18/09/2025 09:46

Yes, completely agree.

I agree, I think changing the legal system is the only way forward. Likely to happen under Labour - probably not. Much being made in the media about the Eritrean asylum seeker who got a last minute reprieve but still waiting to hear what happened to all the others that were supposed to be deported this week - the govt have gone v quiet.

Yes and the ability to control that group further isn’t what I’d like.

No. I think we can be willingly compliant when told it's for the greater good, even against our better judgement and liberty. Look at covid and what happened there.

And I include myself in this - I got a letter from Hancock telling me a database had decided I was uniquely vulnerable, that I should stay indoors and keep away from the windows.

There were hordes of people on MN saying that those identified as vulnerable should be made to go to the back of the NHS queue if we were found out and about.

And I bloody did stay indoors for weeks until I hit the fuck-it wall - and would I have ventured out if I could be pulled to one side and asked to account for that decision against a national database? - probably not. Even though I was free to take my chances with the flu every winter even though that bugger almost killed me off.

Yep Covid put me off ever wanting a digital database. The criminals will avoid it, the public would be under more control. Starmer would love it, authoritarian and craven politician that he is.

CaveMum · 18/09/2025 11:37

Thank you all for accepting my opinion on ID cards and not calling for me to be excommunicated 😜

I totally understand people's thoughts, and agree that it would have to be part of a wide range of measures, including overhaul of the legal system, and perhaps it is because I am one of those compliant, law abiding citizens that I assume that everyone else would follow along.

I think Covid ended that voluntary cooperation though. Not sure people would willingly comply again

We all have differing opinions on many things and that's good 😊 at least on here we can debate them with some level of maturity instead of being accused of being far right all the time 😆😆

I think it’s great if people can say how they feel, so much of mn is just the usual using ‘bot’ and insult etc

Tg for this thread, which I’m glad to say has new pp. Labour are doing some good recruiting to it 😀

twistyizzy · 18/09/2025 11:46

Yes it's lovely to see new names popping up, all very welcome 😊

Upstartled · 18/09/2025 11:52

We'll just add i.d. cards to the agree to disagree pile. I don't mind talking about it or listening to other opinions on it but I'm yet to be convinced there's a good argument for it.
