Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

Cheesecake - why make a cake out of cheese for God’s sake?

Think you'll agree with this classic clip

Check out this video from this search, peter kay cheesecake a cake of cheese https://share.google/zE1j2A6cWsVpMGiAe

Thirded. Strawberries and chocolate really don't go together.

I’m not convinced by raspberries and chocolate either.

Cherries and chocolate do work though with a touch of kirsch!

Jasmin71 · 12/09/2025 12:54

Temperature

Gazpacho, No! Things that meant to warm being served at room temperature, Ew!

I'd forgotten about truffle. So overrated. Really don't understand the passion for truffling everything that sits still for long enough.

Totally agree!

DeanStockwelll · 12/09/2025 12:55

Up until a few years ago I would of agreed with you regarding olives but my tastbuds have changed their mind and I lime them now.
A evening snack for me now is about 6 olives and the same kind of weight / amount of sliced gherkins, pickles and jalapeños. All eaten with a cocktail stick.

I love alsorts of cheese but put fruit in it and it can gtf. If I want fruit with my cheese I will buy the type of fruit I want. ( and it will never be apricots or cranberries) .

I agree with the dislike of celery , okra , I also can't stand bananas.

ChippySauce · 12/09/2025 12:56

Totally agree with matcha.
And foam.
And eggs.
I can't bear the way they smell just so... eggy.

Can’t bear Capers, they never embellish any foods they’re put with.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/09/2025 12:57

Mac n cheese.

Chocolate and orange everything. Yuck.

I don't understand Matcha it just really isnt that nice and im positive people just say they love it to appear "cool" 😀

Agree! It tastes like grass cuttings (I chewed grass as a kid because my cat did), it makes me nauseous.
Sweet n sour pork or prawn balls. Ghastly.

The texture is much nicer if you fry it, as I discovered the other day. Otherwise, I agree.

Rana gnocchi is amazing. I hated gnocchi until I tried their fried one. YUM.

Yes to eggs. I don't eat them, DP does. And somehow, he always manages to leave some gloopy poached egg white in the sink, despite claiming he hasn't. It's almost LTB territory.

Yes, it was Rana and frying that changed my mind.

Mac n cheese.

Are you my mum? She is the only person in the world I have ever met who hates Mac n Cheese... Hi Mum x

ChippySauce · 12/09/2025 13:01

Oh, and blue cheese = mouldy cheese.
How did consuming mould become acceptable?!

Foams. Head on beer, foam on a cappuccino, that God awful trend of flavoured foams being plonked on regular plates of food. It's like spit.

I’m with you on this!

Also artful “smears” across the plate!

I also agree with pp about the current popularity of avocados! They don’t taste of much and have a very slimey texture. And they are an environmental disaster.

I did eat a very tasty chicken salad with avocado once but have been unable to recreate it at home.

Connectingconcrable · 12/09/2025 13:01

Any type of purée. I am not a fucking baby.

Mumofyellows · 12/09/2025 13:02

Eggs eaten on their own not as part of a cake or cooked into a recipe, the worst for me is boiled but really any. How you can eat something that smells SO absolutely revolting is bizarre and disgusting to me!

It is horrible, and yea like chewing grass, my Dc often have take away cups of Matcha 🤢

I also don't like sweet and sour pork !

Chorizo in fish fishes. Just stop! The chorizo is far too strong a flavour and overpowers the fish.

I think chorizo is so over used in so many dishes.

Hospitalcorners52 · 12/09/2025 13:06

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/09/2025 12:57

Mac n cheese.

Actually that’s a good call!

I think chorizo is so over used in so many dishes.

I love it but there's no point in using it in a dish where you want anything else to not taste of chorizo. It would certainly be a waste of a nice piece of fish as said above.

Chilli
Just why would I want to chemical-burn my mouth?

OMG yes.
I don't understand people who think they're somehow special, just because they can eat the hottest curry on a menu.

You can't taste the actual food, and why do people pay to have something so agonising in their mouths? I don't understand.

Mugfills · 12/09/2025 13:09

Avocado. I've early tried to like it, but it doesn't taste of anyhting.

Iloveyoubut · 12/09/2025 13:10

Rollmop Herring and anything from the sea what wiggled around in a shell at some point .. I can’t understand how wiggly shell things are food
